Initial thoughts on story background:

Korrasami.

Pendulum Wars era.

Korra and Asami are both Gears, but serve in different units.

Asami is an engineer and an officer (captain)

Korra is with Special Tactics Group and is an officer (1st LT).

Korra is Kashkuri (Anvegad) and speaks Kashkuri, Tyran, Vasgari, and Gorasni because Kashkur shares a border with Vasgar.

Asami is from Tyrus (Ephyra).

Korra’s dad is a retired Gear in command of Anvegad’s security forces. Mom is on Anvegad’s ruling council.

Asami’s dad is an engineer, mom was an architect. Dad works for the COG. Wealthy family. Mom was killed in a UIR attack, inspiring Asami to become a Gear.

Asami is separated from her unit. She ends up with Korra (alone or with a unit?). They make their way through neutral Vasgar to an objective in the UIR state of Gorasnya.
