something i think could fit in well with the vibe of vintage story is mechanics around dining. like, not simply eating out of a bowl while you're running away from a bear. but like, setting food on a table, sitting at said table, in a chair no less, maybe even using a spoon, tablecloths even. vintage story seems to attract role playing types who would be satisfied simply to have some animations and such to perform this, but some bonus or other mechanical reasons to encourage it could be nice too.
i remember in one of my worlds once i'd found a mod with spoons that actually worked i'd try and eat a meal every morning at my little table i had by the window. it was very nice
i was literally talking about how much i like hexcasting and how much i wished someone would port it to vintage story earlier today and lo and behold i check the mod db and someone has ported it.
the spells don't do anything yet far as i can tell but just porting the casting system is super cool.
very excited that probably my favorite magic system of all time is now in my favorite game of all time
THEY DID WHAT. WAOW
REAL
Hexcasting in Vintagestory Most spells are from base hexcasting, with alterations

So after having experienced a few more temporal storms now I feel like I have better thoughts on the mechanic. I get why many people hate them enough to turn them off entirely, but I think that overall I like them and their inclusion. I won't say they aren't frustrating. They are impossible to fight through early on and they do force a stop to your exploration. But that's part of what I like about them. They help enforce a rhythm to the game and do force you to shake things up occasionally.
But I think my favorite thing about them is the horror aspect. I often see it asked why they are in the game and what purpose they serve. After all they only see to hurt the player and add friction to the game. Seeing the monster designs and the visual effects and hearing the music and sound effects though it's clear that the storms are here for horror. Vintage Story advertises itself as 'an uncompromising wilderness survival sandbox' yes, but immediately following that statement is 'inspired by lovecraftian horror themes'. There's a lot of things Vintage Story is and one of those things is a horror game or at least a game with a very hefty horror element.
The more I look into the caves and the ruins and the more I read the lore too that more that becomes apparent. Vintage Story is a cozy game. It's a game that takes the survival aspect of Minecraft and turns it up to 11. It's a game about slowly progressing through a tech tree as you relive the technological advancement of mankind. But it's also a lovecraftian horror story where people delved too deep and it all went to shit. It's a world where horrors beyond your imagination spawn in from rifts in reality and where large gears will turn in the sky as you begin to lose your grip on things. A world of cryptic notes about some past calamity and a horrifying disease. And it's that bit that the temporal storms are really for.
A temporal storm is, to me, a tornado made eldritch. It is taking the idea of needing to bunker down and mixing that with cosmic horror. The sky darkens, reality around you begins to shift, there are gears off in the distance and our good friend Dave. Monsters are everywhere, high level ones, and they can even spawn in your house. And then there's the damned noises. The noises are honestly what gets to me most. I'm not sure how the effect is without headphones, but with headphones off you can hear the sounds of monsters all around you. Sometimes they are right behind you. But when you turn around to see if there's anything there, there isn't. It's paranoia inducing. And that's lovely.
It does leave me wondering though. In terms of how this is going to play out as the game continues and as its progression deepens. We only just have started the story. There is more of it to be added and with more of it more dungeons with more loot and presumably more tech. Storms can already be turned into fairly benign farming opportunities. What will further progression do the the difficulty and staying power of them?
That aside though overall I am very positive about the temporal storms and the eldritch elements in general. I've seen people say that it doesn't fit and I'm honestly not certain as to why. I'm already a weird little blue guy, the loading screen gives me those cryptic messages, there's little ruins with strange lore and machines and the traders mention some small hints at it. For me it wouldn't really be Vintage Story without these elements.
i'm so glad to see someone else appreciating the worldbuilding of vintage story, i feel like i see a lot of people just ignore it and it makes me sad

obligatory "if i had a nickel for every time kyle maclachlan played the main character's evil dad who ends up losing his memories" post
Hey, they changed the Dylan portrait on the website! (He still turns to the viewer though).
Version 1 on the left, version 2 on the right.
initially misread as "he still turns on the viewer though" and i wasn't gonna argue
there are now three (3) jesse/dylan (fadencest?) fics on ao3 and it's more than i could have ever hoped for
I've always been really into the idea of giving birth to and raising some kinda monster or other non human thing and cause i can't find a name for it i've decided i get to name it and it's called Echidnaphilia now
the reason i've been thinking about this is cause that vault 4 reveal in fallout season 1 did things to me

don't really have anything to say about the new digital circus episode. i think the show might be losing me a little bit
can't say i hated the episode but i also can't really say i felt anything towards it
maybe i'm being too woke but the more i think about it the more confident i am in my opinion that cutting sonar is genuinely the better choice
