The Setup: A SFW bonding story between Moon and Marco
The Heist: 3.6k+ After The Cut
If there was one thing that Marco loved to do on Saturdays, it was to be as lazy as possible. It was practically a requirement to be lounging around in nothing but his pajama bottoms and an open robe, a bowl of cereal in his arm as he lay on the couch watching random nonsense on the television screen while carefully making sure not to let milk dribble down his chin and onto his chest. Letting a loud sigh bellow from his gullet, Marco attempted to merge himself with the upholstery, bare toes wiggling against the coffee table as he let the bowl rest atop his stomach and took the television remote in-hand, quickly flipping through random channels while attempting to maneuver the spoon towards his open maw.
The sound of the doorbell signalled the first few drops of liquid hitting skin, brow furrowing as he watched the substance creep down the slope of his body towards his belly button. âMo~om!â He couldnât help but let the groan creep into his voice as he bellowed out her name, attempting to ignore the presence as he brought his attention back towards his breakfast and the milk traveling down his stomach. It wasnât until the third chime that Marco finally stopped attempting to stretch his tongue at the milk trail, grumbling under his breath as he sat up to place the bowl onto the table and pull his bathrobe around his body. â-of course Iâll get the door, I definitely donât mind. Starâs out with Janna and Momâs probably drawing Dad⌠again.â Rolling his eyes, the teenager slowly stomped towards the foyer, taking a moment to pause and stretch himself out before carelessly throwing open the door. âOkay, whaaa~â
The sight of the Queen of Mewni standing at his doorstep brought whatever quip heâd had prepared to an early close, mouth hanging open slightly as his chocolate eyes locked onto the imposing figure before him. Both attendants standing to her side looked on at the human with completely neutral expressions, rigorous training keeping their lips from cracking as a random corn flake fell from the back of his mouth, eyes moving towards Moon Butterfly for only a split second before returning their gaze forwards. To Marcoâs sheer horror, the Queen of all Mewni seemed to give the food particle her undevoted attention, her head tilting downwards to follow it towards the ground. The entire time Marco could feel the silence between them all enclosing in on him, the sheer embarrassment of the situation threatening to cause him to implode right where he stood.
âGreetings Marco.â Her voice cut through the awkward silence like a red-hot knife through a block of ice. âI donât suppose you could tell me where my daughter might be hiding?â The question seemed to hang in the air between them both, Moon keeping her composure in front of the half-dressed teenager as he stared at her like a deer before a moving vehicle.
âI-I-I-â It took the boy a moment to regain himself in front of regality, his overloaded brain needing time to remember that he could in-fact move as he attempted to wrench his hand free of the doorknob. âI-Iâll be ri~ght back!â The door slammed shut with a fury that Marco knew instantly would cause him regret when he returned. All three Mewmans clenched their eyes shut at the sound, both guards blinking lightly while Moon calmly kept her composure.
For a few moments all three merely stared ahead at the door, neither guard wanting to make any motion or sound, as if the slightest noise might set off some sort of chain reaction. âUmâ The voice came as a surprise to one guard as the other spoke. âI-Iâm sure that heâll be right back, your Majesty.â The Queen merely turned her head towards the outspoken guard, though it was his companionâs alarmed expression that caught his attention. âEr, I mean⌠Iâll just⌠Maâam.â
Marcoâs back was practically plastered to the door, a hand clenched around his chest as if to keep his heart from thrashing its way straight out of his body. âOkay. Okay. Okayâ The words echoed in his mind as they escaped through his lips, attempting vainly to gain a foothold on his situation. âStarâs mom is right on the other side of this door. Starâs mom is⌠Starâs momâŚâ His eyes widened as it finally dawned on him exactly what heâd done. âI just slammed the door on the Queen of Mewni. Oh man, Starâs going to kill me. Sheâs going to kill-STAR!!â Marco wrenched the bathrobe tight around his body as he bounded up the stairs, practically teleporting into his bedroom and throwing the garment aside. âStar! Star, your Momâs-crap, thatâs right, youâre not here. Phone - phone, phone - phoneâ Various hoodies and skinny jeans flew out of his closet as he scrambled to make himself decent. The light jingle of Space Unicorn captured his attention, emerging from the closet like an olympic diver as he landed on the bed to snatch at the phone. âStar, where are you!?â
âMarco? Hey!â The Mewman princessâ voice rang through from the other end, ignorant of the panicked look in his eyes and his half-dressed state. âWhatâs going on? Janna and I are hanging out at the arcade, sheâs showing me how to âjank the machinesâ? I have no idea what that means, but weâre totally winning all kinds of prizes and itâs awesome! The best part is that I havenât even used my-â
âStar, that-thatâs really nice and all, but I could really use you back home!â Marco struggled to keep his voice steady as he realized that he was trying to fit an arm through a pants leg. âYouâre not gonna believe this, but-â
The sound of arcade tokens clinking rang out through the speaker as Jannaâs voice cut through. âStar, you see that? Itâs all in the wrist! Câmon, I wanna try and get that big gremlin plushie I saw at the claw machine.â
âMarco, Iâve gotta go, Janna wants me to make all the stuffed animals walk out of the machine and do a little dance for everyone.â Marco could only gape silently into the phone as the sounds of cheering adolescents filled his ears. âHave fun by yourself, Marco!â
âSta-â Marco pulled the phone away, staring blankly at the hunk of plastic in his hands and letting a soft groan flow from between his lips. âHave fun, she saysâ He deadpanned, tossing the touchscreen onto the bed and putting his full attention back towards dressing himself. âOh sure, Iâll have plenty of fun, covering for you while your mother stands right at my door sto~oAHHHH, I left Starâs mother at my doorstep!â
If Moon was as thrown off by the wild look in Marcoâs eyes as he threw the front door open, she certainly didnât show it, keeping a neutral expression as the Latino boy attempted to regain his composure. âWould you like to catch your breath?â She leaned forward with a calm expression and a clear voice, Marco unable to tell if she were mocking him or legitimately asking.
âNo, I-Iâm fine⌠Just fine, would you like to come in?â He managed to keep his balance by leaning against the doorframe, pulling himself aside so that the others would be allowed entrance. Marco couldnât help but feel the air in the room become tight as the Queen and her escorts walked into his living room, watching as she methodically looked at the many decorations, pausing to stare at a picture of the family sitting upon their mantelpiece before moving towards the couch. âPlease, just⌠make yourself at home.â Looking towards the two guards standing at the doorway for advice, he merely received a raised eyebrow for support. âStar isnât exactly home right now, but if you want to wait here, I could-â
âStarâs not the one I came here to see.â
Marco blinked, completely stopping in place in order to fully turn his body around to properly face the Queen of Mewni. âIâm sorry, what was that now?â
Moon carefully picked up the framed piece, tilting it slightly as she looked at the three family members standing and posing together. âI said that Iâm not here to visit my daughter.â She slowly placed the picture back, turning towards her host. âSheâs been through quite a bit already and I donât think that she would like to know that her mother came to visit her while she wasnât here, would she?â
âNo, my dear boy, I would hope not. No I am here to see you.â
âMe? Me, what about me? Wh-why would you come here to see, see me?â
For a moment, there was nothing but silence between the both of them, the elder calmly staring at him as if he were an old friend rather than her daughterâs caretaker before looking towards the furniture in the middle of the living room. âBefore anything, Marco Diaz, would you mind ifâŚ?â
Marco stared at her for a few seconds, completely blank as to what she was trying to ask until a light bulb finally clicked in the back and sent the boy into a fluster. âOh. Oh! Would you⌠like to sit down?â
âWhy yes Marco, Iâd love to, thank you.â She had barely finished the sentence before her attendant, Manifred reacted almost instantly, taking a feather duster and thread from the inside of his outfit and cleaning it with a fervor that Marco had never even seen. He could swear that it was practically a different chair, shocked with how pristine it was, almost believing that some of the stains it had gained over the years had been removed as well. A fluffy light-blue pillow was placed on top and the Queen slowly took her seat, settling into the cushion and making herself comfortable.
Thank you, Manifred. Now then, Marco, I want to thank you for everything youâve done for us. For our kingdom and for our daughter.â
âYou really donât have to thank me for-â
Moon held up her hand, silencing the teenagerâs protest. âThere is no need for humility when praise is due, Marco. Youâve done both myself and my daughter a great service by taking her in and helping her in adjusting to living on your world, as well as with her own personal needs.â She brought a gloved hand to her face, covering her mouth and keeping the small wry grin hidden from her hostâs gaze. âI know that it is no easy task for someone who is not of Mewman blood to handle a girl in the throes of Mewberty, yet you managed to keep her and everyone safe for the majority of things. Iâm quite surprised you didnât end up plastered to a wall or anything remotely similar.â
Marcoâs cheeks took on a tinge of pink as he lifted a hand to scratch at the back of his head. âYeah, that kind-of happened, actually. Thankfully it wasnât that bad, I mean I was able to get out of it fairly easily.â He held his breath as the memory of Starâs Mewberty form standing over him with arms outstretched and spray of purple heart-shaped butterfly silk flowing from her many hands. âIâm sure it couldâve been worse.â
âReally now? And you were still able to free yourself?â Moon shook her head, lost in her own memory. âI remember when River had done the same for me when I was going through my own time⌠only I recall that it took him more than a few days to get free after I got my hands on him. Perhaps she was holding back against you?â Her eyes closed as she slowly nodded her head in thought. âHow sweet of her, it really does show how much she cares for you.â
âTh-thanks, I guess?â
âNone are needed for me, Marco Diaz. No, what I want to ask you now, since youâve shown how much you care for my daughter, is just how far you would go for her.â
A single eyebrow raised in confusion, Marcoâs arms crossing as he tilted his head to the side. âI donât understand what youâre asking me. I mean, weâve been through so much together, so I would think-â
âIf she asked you to go to Mewni with her, would you do so?â Marco found himself without his voice, his mind freezing from the question being thrown at him. âIâm sure the thought has passed through your mind at least once throughout the time youâve spent together⌠unless you had something else in mind.â His throat tightened as Moon continued to speak, her voice ringing in his mind. âI suppose you were merely going to allow her to leave and let her go back to rule Mewni all alone?â
âI understand that you both have been through quite a bit, has she told you about what sheâll face when she ascends the throne? About the responsibilities and tribulations that await her once she returns? How sheâll have to face backstabbing nobles, diplomats⌠suitors coming for her hand-in-marriage?â He could feel his heart stopping as Moonâs words dug into his body. âI imagine youâve built quite a bond through these last few months, considering how far you both have gone for each other. I donât surmise that youâd simply let her leave to face these trials alone, would you?â
Marco bit at his lip, unable to bear looking at the Queenâs face, the copper taste of blood hitting his tongue as her words bore into his soul. âWh-why are you telling me this? What do you want me to do?â
The Queenâs face took on an expression of surprise, the teenager easily seeing her open mouth from behind her gloved hand. âWhy Marco, Iâm not asking you to do anything at all. Iâm far more interested in knowing what you want to do. Would you be willing to follow her back?â
There was a moment of silence between the two, Marcoâs mouth becoming dry as the realization of what was being suggested slowly dawned on him. âA-are you asking me if I-Iâd-â
âOh, Iâm not suggesting anything in particular, Marco. You should understand, while youâve stood firm beside my daughter for a majority of her time with her wand, you should know how she feels about taking up the throne. While youâre not of noble name or blood, you should at least understand that youâve done more than enough to have earned a title.â Moonâs eyes brightened in amusement at how her hostâs own bulged in excitement. âIf it were up to me, a lordship would be more than appropriate for you, though perhaps youâd be more interested in a knighthood⌠how does Sir Marco sound to you, hmm?â
It took the boy a moment to realize that he was being asked a legitimate question, blinking himself back to reality. âLordship? Knighthood? Sir Marco!? Wait just a minute, Iâm not interested in any-â
Moon continued on, unfazed by Marcoâs reaction, voice seemingly growing in tone. âPerhaps I could arrange it for you, should you follow her back to Mewni. I could see to it that youâd be well-rewarded for everything youâve done. Your parents would be compensated for all the trouble my daughter has caused them and you would be able to live comfortably for the rest of your-â
âThatâs enough!â His voice caused the Queen of Mewni to flinch in her seat, her guards tensing in-place as they gripped tightly at their weapons before she waved them down. âI didnât do any of this to get rewarded. My parents didnât take her into our home because they wanted to get a big shiny box of gold every other week after Star blows up our kitchen trying to make us breakfast. I donât want to follow Star back to Mewni just so I can get rewarded, I want to follow Star back because Iâm worried for her, I want to follow her back because I care for her!â
The air was tense as Moon looked up at Marcoâs glaring face, both guards taking a step forward, ready to react if the boy became any more emotional, yet the Queen easily handled the teenage boyâs outburst, summarizing his position for him. âSo youâre willing to follow her, regardless of reward, knowing that youâd be giving up your life here on Earth?â
Marcoâs throat tightened and his jaw clamped shut as he realized exactly what heâd done, losing his cool in front of someone whom could easily have him thrown into a dungeon, never to see the light of day again. âIf-I mean, it doesnât seem so bad⌠and sheâs always been worried about how sheâll rule the kingdom, you know? I couldnât just let her go back home and face everything thatâs gone on without me, it wouldnât feel right.â The prideful expression on the Queenâs face, her warm eyes and the smile on her face made Marco squirm in-place, unsure of what sort of action to take. âThatâs just, just how I feel about it, okay? Is-Is that what you were wanting to hear?â
âTo be honest with you Marco Diaz, when I came here, I wasnât sure what to expect from you.â Even with Marco towering over her, Moon still came across as absolutely intimidating. âI know that youâve been a good friend to my daughter, a healthy influence and a guiding hand.â
âAre you kidding? Have you seen what Star did to that football field? And I was there for that!â Moonâs eyebrow raised barely half an inch and Marco immediately smashed his mouth together to keep any more of their misadventures from slipping past his loose lips. âActually, can you just⌠can you just forget I said anything about that? Eheh⌠hehâŚâ
Moon merely kept a neutral expression as she stared down the boy shrinking backwards from her, a faint hum coming from the depths of her throat. âYes, of course. Still, despite your setbacks, you have shown yourself to be quite capable of standing by my daughterâs side.â She slowly rose to her feet, regal composure slightly intimidating the boy as she brushed off a hint of invisible dust. âIf you were to take such a leap of faith and follow my daughter back to Mewni⌠I would hope youâd feel comfortable knowing that youâd have my support.â
âWait⌠really!?â Marcoâs eyes widened in surprise for a moment before a light chuckle from the Queen brought him back to a state of confusion.
âOf course⌠however, donât think that I will simply give you my daughterâs hand on a silver platter. Youâre not exactly the most regal character to be a part of the royal familyâŚâ Her smile sent chills down Marcoâs spine. â⌠then again, neither was River.â
âAre you sure you donât want to stick around a little longer?â Marco held the door open, the eager look on his face betraying the concern in his voice. âIâm sure that Star would be more than happy to see you. You two could catch up, maybe she could show you around?â
Moon shook her head, the guards at each side of her standing at attention. âNo Marco, as much as Iâd love to check in on my little girl, Iâm afraid I donât have anymore time to spend here on Earth. Besides, Iâm certain that sheâd likely have a panic attack at seeing me here without any sort of warning. I expect sheâd react the same way my River does when I ask to sit in on his âspeechesâ every now and again.â
âIâm sure Iâve probably seen that face more than you think.â Marco shook his head lightly, remembering some of the princessâ expressions when her misdeeds came to light. âSo⌠you came all this way, just to talk to me?â
âAre you really that surprised, Marco?â Moon actually took on a hurt expression, bringing a hand to her chest. âWould you really think I wouldnât take the time to check in on my daughterâs potential suitor?â
âWait, what? No, weâre not dating!â It took a few seconds for Marco to realize what heâd just heard, having automatically thrown out the response without even thinking. âYou⌠did you just call me-I-what?â The boy blinked rapidly before turning to face the calm Mewman.
âDonât look so surprised. After all, I trust you with my daughter. Besides, I didnât say that Iâd simply give you her hand. Youâll have to earn it, just like any other royal suitor.â The flabbergasted look on his face was priceless, Moon merely curtseying to him before turning away, her guards a step behind.
âYour Majestyâ Manifred finally spoke up, leaning towards the Queen as she was stepping into her coach. âWith all due respect, was it really such a good idea to get the poor boyâs spirits up? After all, heâs not at all like King River, he was not born into royaltyâŚâ
âThis is trueâ Moon mused, taking a seat and holding out her hand so that the servant sitting inside could serve her tea without spilling any on her pristine, powder-blue dress. âHe wasnât born into royalty, but Iâm more than certain that this little visit of mine nestled in the back of his mind should give him some extra motivation towards following my little shooting Star down her path to becoming the next Queen.â
âYes, your Grace, but if I may be so bold⌠his erm, lack of pedigree?â
âAh yes, that.â Moon lowered her head, a hand to her mouth to keep the chuckle from overflowing. âI wouldnât be surprised if Star would have something to say to the royal council about him becoming her personal knight. A mother knows when her daughter has their eye on a boy, after all.â
