I duck down under the frame and place my foot carefully on the carpet. The other foot matches it with more pressure, i wince but thankfully the sound is minimal. I step to the side and take the bag from his hands. I sling it over one shoulder. He follows through the same way. 

I take a deep breath in. First step completed. Now, where is it? Its clear we both have the same thought as i see his head quickly scan the room around us. Even with minimal light you can see it’s a garish old front room with wallpaper practically falling off the walls. It makes my eyes hurt just looking around it. ‘Kitchen’ i whisper. He nods and gestures to the door to the right. I nod in response. 

The visiblity in the kitchen is better, the moon is high through the windows. I decide to check the shelves. ‘woah!’ I hear from behind me. Jesus christ, what did he do now? His eyes are wide and is looking at a cat on the fridge. Thats great, we all love cats but can we find this box already? ‘shh!’ i whisper with an eyeroll. Please don’t be too hidden little box. I open a few cupboards on my right. Whoop there it is! Thank you, thank you, thank you. i grab it lightly and sling the bag back down. In it goes, package secured. 

‘Hiya cutie’ he whispers to the dark hairball still watching us from above. Hes clearly not looking at me but i hope he can feel my glare. ‘Got it, let’s go’ he turns back to me like he’s finally remembered why we were here. 

I make a move for the kitchen door. I hear him follow behind softly. We pass the other room again and we’re back to the 60s horror show. It’s not like i should care how people decorate their houses but. Anyway lets get out of here fast.

He goes to close the window but is interrupted by the cats padding paws on the window sill. Heres me thinking this was going smoothly. He coos at the hairball. ‘Can we keep it?’ he asks me with pleading eyes. The cat meows loudly, does it want to be catnapped? ‘awe kitty !’ he strokes under it’s ears, he cat just purrs in response. Does he really want to take this cat right now? this isn’t a good idea. Before i can respond reasonably with an ‘Absolutely not’ he takes the cat into his arms.
