The Graham Strategy
Pairing: Garret Graham x Reader
Summary: A harmless campus prank war gets out of hand when Garrett accidentally targets you instead of his teammates. The elaborate apologies he leaves around campus to win back your good graces become the talk of the university.
The war began on a Tuesday, and by all accounts, it was supposed to be restricted entirely to the walls of the Briar University varsity locker room.
It started innocently enoughโa classic case of Tucker hiding Loganโs left skate, which escalated into Logan filling Garrettโs hockey duffel with three hundred individually wrapped pink starbursts. But Garrett Graham was not a man who accepted defeat, nor was he a man who understood the concept of "proportional response." He was the team captain. If he was going to strike back, he was going to make it an architectural marvel.
The plan was simple: a finely tuned, gravity-assisted cascade of brightly colored plastic ball-pit spheres triggered by the opening of the main locker room supply closet.
The execution, however, suffered from a catastrophic flaw in intelligence gathering.
You weren't a hockey player. You were a sports journalism major who had merely been granted temporary access to the varsity corridor to drop off an approved interview transcript for Coach Campbell. When you turned the brass handle of the supply closet door looking for a spare notepad, you didn't find stationery.
You found a tidal wave.
Four hundred neon-pink, blue, and yellow plastic balls exploded outward with the force of a broken dam, knocking the heavy folder from your hands, sending your loose papers scattering across the freshly bleached tile, and burying your sneakers in a sea of childhood birthday party nostalgia.
From the end of the hallway, a horrified gasp echoed. Garrett, who had been lurking around the corner with his phone out to record Loganโs impending doom, froze. His jaw dropped, his phone nearly slipping through his fingers as he realized the tiny, catastrophic detail: he had sniped the wrong target.
"Oh, no," he muttered, rushing forward, his athletic slides clicking loudly against the floor. "Heyโhey, I am so sorry. That was absolutely not meant for you."
You had looked up from the floor, surrounded by plastic spheres, with an expression that could have curdled milk. "Graham," you had said, your voice dangerously calm. "You have exactly three seconds to start picking these up before I make sure Coach Campbell sees the footage from the hallway security cameras."
He had cleared them up, of course. He had practically dived across the floor like a goalie trying to save a game-winning puck, apologizing profusely with every single ball he threw back into the closet. But the damage was done. The campus prank war had claimed its first civilian casualty, and Garrett Graham was officially on notice.
By Wednesday morning, the campaign for your forgiveness had officially launched, and it quickly became clear that Garrett didn't know how to do anything in moderation.
You were sitting in the back row of your 9:00 AM lecture, nursing a lukewarm coffee, when your phone buzzed against the wooden desk.
Garrett ๐: Please tell me you aren't still plotting my untimely demise. ๐ซฃ You: The jury is still out. Iโm still finding pink plastic dust on my shoes, Graham. Garrett ๐: I am a changed man. A reformed prankster. To prove my absolute devotion to the cause of peace... look to your left. ๐ง
You frowned, turning your head toward the lecture hall door. A student worker from the campus mail center was awkwardly shuffling down the sloped aisle, holding a massive, obnoxious bouquet of bright yellow sunflowers that practically blocked his vision. The entire row of students turned to watch as the poor guy stopped directly at your desk, setting the massive arrangement down right next to your laptop.
Tucked into the center was a small, white card with Garrettโs messy handwriting: โA peace offering. Please note the distinct lack of gravity-assisted projectiles. โ G.โ
The girls in the row in front of you immediately whipped around, their eyes wide. "Are those from Garrett Graham?" one of them whispered loudly. "Did he actually send those into a lecture?"
Your phone buzzed again.
Garrett ๐: Did they arrive?? Are we at a truce yet? ๐ปโจ You: Garrett, everyone is staring at me. This bouquet is the size of a small toddler. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ Garrett ๐: Only the best for the victim of the Great Ball Pit Incident of 2026. Accept the flowers, accept the truce! ๐ Capiche? You: Not capiche. Itโs a start, but youโre still in the penalty box. ๐ง
By Thursday, the situation had escalated from a private apology to the main event of the university quad.
The Briar University quad was always packed during the midday rush, with students moving between the dining hall and the library. You were walking with a classmate, discussing a group project, when you noticed a massive crowd gathering near the central bronze statue of the university mascot.
"What is going on over there?" your friend asked, squinting. "Is that... the hockey team?"
Your stomach dropped with a sudden, hilarious premonition.
As you got closer, the crowd parted, and there they were. Logan, Tucker, and Dean were standing in a neat line, each holding up a massive, hand-painted poster board. Loganโs sign read: WE. Tuckerโs read: ARE. Deanโs read: SORRY.
And right in the center stood Garrett, wearing his full home jersey, looking entirely ridiculous and completely unabashed. In his hands, he wasn't holding a sign. He was holding a giant, freshly baked chocolate chip cookie cake from the bakery downtownโthe kind that required two hands to carryโwith the words โIโM AN IDIOTโ piped in bright blue frosting across the top.
The moment Garrett spotted you in the crowd, his face lit up. He took three long strides forward, stopping right in front of you while half the sophomore class watched with amused grins.
"Captain's orders," Garrett announced, his voice carrying easily over the open space. "The hockey program formally apologizes for the unauthorized use of childhood toys in a varsity workspace." He lowered the giant cookie slightly, offering you a brilliant, dimpled smile that made it entirely impossible to stay mad. "And more importantly, Iโm really, really sorry I ruined your paperwork."
Logan leaned over from behind his sign. "He made us stand out here for twenty minutes waiting for you," he called out. "Please accept the cookie so we can go get lunch."
"Shut up, Logan, Iโm securing the perimeter," Garrett snapped back playfully, before turning his full attention back to you. His dark eyes softened, a genuinely sweet, boyish look replacing his usual confident captain persona. "Seriously. Truce?"
You looked at the massive cookie, then at the three giant signs, and finally at Garrett, whose hair was slightly messy from the autumn wind. A laugh bubbled up in your chest, completely breaking through the last of your stubborn resolve.
"Fine," you said, reaching out to take the heavy bakery box from his hands. "Truce. But only because chocolate chip is my weakness."
The crowd erupted into a few cheers and laughs, and Tucker dramatically dropped his sign like a soldier surviving a long deployment. Garrettโs smile widened, relief evident in the way his shoulders dropped.
"Excellent," he said, stepping closer so the surrounding crowd couldn't hear him as easily. "Does this mean I get upgraded from the penalty box to a coffee date tomorrow morning?"
You raised an eyebrow, balancing the massive cookie cake in your arms. "Don't push your luck, Graham. You're on parole."
Later that evening, you were sitting in your room, a massive slice of the apology cookie resting on a plate next to your textbook. The sunflowers were neatly arranged in a vase on your desk, brightening up the entire corner of the room.
Your phone chimed on the mattress beside you.
Garrett ๐: Just checking in to make sure the cookie wasnโt poisoned by Logan during the transit process. ๐ช๐ You: Itโs actually delicious. Youโre officially forgiven, Garrett. The varsity hallway is safe from my wrath. Garrett ๐: Mission accomplished. ๐ซก Honestly though, Iโm glad you laughed today. I felt like a total jerk about the paperwork. You: It was worth it just to see Logan holding a sign that said "WE" like a confused bodyguard. ๐ Garrett ๐: Hey, he owed me for the Starburst incident. But seriously... about that coffee? โ๏ธ Friday morning. No pranks, no hockey team, just me being completely normal. You: Normal? I donโt know if Iโve ever seen you do "normal," Graham. You brought a parade to the quad. ๐ช Garrett ๐: Fair point. But I promise I can be very charming when Iโm not actively operating a ball pit. Deal? ๐ You: Deal. 8:00 AM at the campus cafe. Donโt be late. Garrett ๐: Iโll be there at 7:45. Set your alarm! See you tomorrow. โค๏ธโจ
You stared at the little red heart emoji at the end of the text, a sudden, warm flutter erupting in your chest. Setting your phone down, you took another bite of the cookie, looking over at the bright yellow sunflowers on your desk.
The campus prank war might have been a complete disaster for the hockey team's dignity, but as you leaned back against your pillows with a smile you couldn't quite shake, you had a feeling it was the best mistake Garrett Graham had ever made.

"Your dad is really fucking sexy"
Blurbs; Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Duke Thomas x reader (who is wilding for some unknown reason)
Summary: You happen to see Bruce Wayne on TV, and you let your boyfriend know you'd so bang his dad.
TW: Two are pure smut, no dark themes (I don't do that :p), the other two are kind of smutty. So read at your own risk. Minors dni.
A/n: The girls are going to be in part 2, I have not forgotten about them I promise.
DICK GRAYSON
You squint at the TV, then lean up to whisper right against Dickโs ear, โYou knowโฆ Iโd so fuck your dad.โ
Dick freezes mid-stroke through your hair. He blinks, letting out a snicker that quickly turns into a gasp of betrayal when he realizes youโre serious.
โYou what?โ he sputters, clutching his chest like you just plunged a batarang into his sternum. โBabe. No. Absolutely not.โ
โOh, come on,โ you tease, running a hand down his stomach and lightly pulling at the waistband of his sweatpants. โLook at him! Heโs totally sexy.โ
โHeโs an old man with back pain!โ Dick squawks, grabbing your wrist, though he doesn't actually stop you from slipping your hand lower. โI am literally the younger and hotter one! Your eyes should be on MEโ
You trail your fingers over his boner, making his breath hitch. โBut thereโs just something about a guy who could snap me in halfโ
โI can snap you in half right now!โ he choked out, pinning your hands above your head, straddling your lap. โI have spent hours fucking you into this mattress until you scream my name, and youโre sitting here fantasizing about the man who grounded me for three weeks in high school? Your the worst!โ
โIโm just saying the jawlineโs delicious,โ you smirk, bucking up against him.
Dick groans and dramatically throws his head back before leaning down to bite your neckย โShut up,โ he hisses against your skin, sliding his hand under your shirt to cup your breast, his thumb rolling over your nipple. โYouโre taking my dick tonight, not his. And Iโm going to make you apologize for every word of that blasphemy while Iโm deep inside you.โ
โSoโฆ no father-son double team?โ you whisper innocently.
โI am going to choke you,โ Dick laughs, wildly turned on, his lips hot against yours. โBabe, seriously. Never say that shit againโ
JASON TODD
You tilt your head, tracing a thumb over Jasonโs heavily calloused knuckles. โYou knowโฆ Iโd totally fuck your dad.โ
Jason doesn't even pause his cleaning cloth. He just slowly exhales through his nose, his eyes fixated on the slide of his gun.
โMhm. Yeah, totally, babe,โ he says dryly. โYouโre definitely not just spewing bullshit to try to get under my skin and score a nice fuck.โ
You roll your eyes, digging your hip into his thigh. โIโm serious! Heโs so fucking sexy!โ
โBabe,โ Jason cuts in, finally tossing the rag onto the coffee table with a thud. He looks down at you, a smirk pulling at the corner of his scarred lips. โIf you want me to tie you to the bedpost and rearrange your guts, you just have to ask. You donโt need to bring the old manโs midlife crisis into my living room.โ
โIโm just saying, heโs got that physique going for him and thosโ ah!โ
Before you can finish the sentence, Jasonโs hands shoot out, grabbing your hips and tossing you onto your back on the sofa cushions. The weight of him presses down on you in a heartbeat, his knee shoving your legs apart as he looms over you.
โYeah? You like the physique?โ he mocks, his hand snaking up your thigh, bunching up your skirt until his calloused palm is flush against your panties. โYou want someone to make you shut your smart fucking mouth?โ
Your breath hitches, your cunt throbbing instantly. โMaybe.โ
โYouโre a dirty little instigator,โ he mutters against your lips, biting your lower lip hard enough to make you moan before pushing your panties to the side. โThinking about my dad while sitting on my lap? Thatโs sick. Iโm gonna have to rail you until you forget your own name, just to clear out the fucking mental picture.โ
โPromises, promises,โ you gasp as his palm grinds over your clit.
Jason chuckles darkly โShut up and lift your hips. Letโs see if Bruce could make you scream half as loud as Iโm about to.โ
TIM DRAKE
You lean forward, resting your chin on Timโs shoulder. โYou knowโฆ Iโd so bang your dad.โ
He sighs and turns his head, dark circles under his eyes, staring at you like you just spoke in ancient Sumerian.
โI thought you hated him,โ Tim says, his voice flat with utter bewilderment. โYou literally hated him yesterday!โ
โThat was yesterday,โ you hum, sliding onto his lap and straddling his thighs. โToday, Iโm noticing the jawline. Heโs a silver fox, Timmy. So fucking fineโ
โWhat is wrong with you?โ Tim groans, slamming his laptop shut as his hands automatically catch your waist. โYou have such a dirty mind! Heโs my father figure!โ
โI bet heโs dominant,โ you whisper, running your fingers through Timโs messy hair, sliding down his neck to tug at his collar. โProbably takes what he wants.โ
Timโs jaw tightens, a flush creeping up his neck that isn't entirely from anger. โAre you trying to get under my skin? Because itโs working. Itโs working really well, and not in the way you think, you absolute menace.โ
โOh yeah?โ You grind your hips down against him, feeling the hard length already pressing against his jeans. โYou look pretty bothered, Drake.โ
โIโve been awake working on this case, and now my partner is telling me they want to get bent over by my boss,โ Tim huffs. He tilts your chin up, his eyes sharp. โYou think heโs dominant? Are you sick of riding me? What is this? I could be on topโ he argued, defensivelyย
โProve it,โ you smirk.
Tim huffs petulantly, spinning the chair around and pinning you back against his desk, scattering files everywhere. His hand slides roughly under your thigh, hooking over your knee to pull you wide open for him.
DUKE THOMAS crashing out why is there no yellow
You squint at the screen, running a hand up Dukeโs inner thigh. โYou knowโฆ Iโd so do your dad.โ
Dukeโs thumbs stills on the controller. His character immediately gets blasted off a cliff, but he doesn't even care. He drops the controller into his lap, staring at you in horrified disbelief.
โEw, babe! That is disgusting!โ Duke yelps, as he shoves your hand back. โWhat brought that on?? Where is this coming from? Are you ovulating? Is your brain leaking? What is happening right now?!โ
โIโm just observing facts!โ you laugh, wiggling closer and hooking your leg over his waist. โYou canโt tell me he wouldnโt know exactly what to do withโโ
โDo not finish that sentence!โ Duke groans, slapping his hands over his ears. โThat is my father. A man who goes to bed at five in the morning and drinks black coffee like itโs water.โ
โIโm just saying, the broad ass shoulders and jawline?โ You smirk up at him, bucking your hips slightly against his. โItโs hot.โ
โYou know whatโs actually hot?โ Duke rolls his eyes, his tone growing slightly arrogant. He leans down, his chest crushing against yours, his knee shoving right between your legs to press hard against your cunt. โThe guy holding you who can go for three rounds without taking a breath. The guy who literally bends you over this sofa every weekend.โ
Your breath hitches as his thigh grinds upward, right through your shorts. โOh, so now youโre competitive?โ
โIโm not competitive, Iโm offended,โ Duke mutters against your neck, nipping hard at the curve where your shoulder meets your collarbone. His free hand slides down, ripping your shorts down your hips until his warm calloused palm is cupping you bare and dripping. โYou want someone who can barely keep his dick up? When you have me?โ
A/n: to my moots. the demons possessed me into writing this. im so much more than js horny i swear.
On another note, I put 'Dick' into the tags and the first thing that popped up was 'dick growth spell'. what are men on tumblr doing.

DICK GRAYSON
You're going to kill him.
Like actually physically kill him.
"Again?" he laughs, that bright, easy laugh that made you fall for him in the first place.
Oh god oh fuck you're horny again.
Don't get him wrong, he's not complaining. He's never complaining. He loves you. He worship you. He gets off on making you cum.
But his dick is literally chafed and he's running on two hours of sleep and a protein bar he ate between round three and round four andโ
You're already tugging at his belt.
His belt. Which he just buckled. Thirty seconds ago.
He's hard again.
How?
How is he hard again?
He's not twenty anymore, he's pushing thirty, his knees click when he does certain positions, he pulled a hamstring last week doing that thing you like where he folds you like a pretzelโokay, he has been slacking lately BUT it's your fault because you don't even let him leave the houseโ
"No, no, baby, I'mโ I'm not complaining," he says, already breathless, already getting to his knees because you've got that look, with glassy eyes, and pouty lips, "I justโ hahโ give me five minutes? Ten? I need to rehydrate, I need toโ"
"You don't want me?"
What?
The words hit him like a bullet to his chest.
No. No no no no. Don't ever say that. Don't ever think that. He wants you. He wants you so much it's ruining him. He wants you when he's asleep, wants you when he's awake, wants you when he's bleeding out on a rooftop wondering if he'll make it home in time to taste you before patrolโ
He's already got his mouth on you. Already. Didn't even make a conscious decision. His body just moved because his body wants you and your pleasure, your smile, the little gasp you make when he gets it just rightโ
"I want you," he mumbles into your thigh, "I want you, I want you, I want you, don't ever say I don't, I'llโ I'll prove it, I'll stay down here all night, I don't need sleep, sleep is for people who aren't dating a goddess, I'll justโ"
You pull him up by his hair. He whimpers. He whimpers like a puppy because his girlfriend touched his scalp.
God, he's pathetic.
He loves it.
He loves you.
"You were saying something about rehydrating?" you ask, and your voice is teasing but your hand is wrapped around him and his vision goes sparkly at the edges.
"Who caresโah fuck," he hears himself say, "I-I don't...ugh... Give a f-fuck."
And later, when he's lying on top of you, every muscle screaming, a single tear is rolling down his cheek, because fuck he's overstimulated, He press his lips to your sweaty forehead.
"You're gonna break me someday, you know that?"
You smile.
"That's the plan,"
His dick twitch again, and he'll laugh hysterically into your hair because he's the luckiest man walking in the entire goddamn world.

Hannah convinced you to come to the game a week later, insisting that supporting Justin meant supporting the whole team, which conveniently included Garrett, though she didnโt say that part out loud. You didnโt put up much of a fight. You liked watching him play, more than youโd ever admit out loud, the way he moved different on the ice, sharper, more focused, nothing like the easy, teasing version of him youโd gotten used to off the rink.
The three of you found seats near the boards, Allie already halfway through a soft pretzel before the puck had even dropped, and you settled in, scanning the ice until you found Garrett doing warmup laps, and he caught your eye almost immediately, flashing a grin before skating off toward his teammates.
โHeโs so obvious,โ Allie said, not looking up from her pretzel. โLike, painfully obvious.โ
โHe is not obvious.โ
โHe looked directly at you the second he stepped on the ice. Thatโs not subtle, babe.โ
You rolled your eyes, though you couldnโt fully suppress the small smile tugging at your mouth, watching him settle into position as the game got underway.
It was a good game, close and tense in a way that had the whole crowd on edge by the third period, and you found yourself getting swept up in it more than you expected, half out of your seat during a breakaway that ended in a goal, Garrettโs assist on the play sending the crowd into a roar. Heโd looked up into the stands afterward, finding you immediately, grinning wide enough that it made your chest ache in the best way.
The team won, barely, and afterward you waited near the entrance with Hannah and Allie for the players to file out, the post-game buzz still thick in the air.
Thatโs when Kendall found you.
She approached with the same easy, practiced confidence as last time, blonde hair falling perfectly despite the cold, smiling in a way that didnโt quite reach her eyes.
โGood game, right?โ she said, sliding up beside you like you were old friends. โGarrett played really well tonight.โ
โHe did.โ You kept your voice neutral, unsure why your stomach had already started tightening.
โHeโs good at that. Making people feel like the center of attention.โ Kendallโs smile stayed easy, conversational, though something calculated sat underneath it. โItโs kind of his whole thing, actually. Very charming in the moment. Doesnโt always mean much beyond that, though.โ
โIโm aware of his reputation.โ
โIโm sure you are. Everyone is.โ She examined her nails briefly, casual, like she wasnโt dropping something deliberately. โItโs funny, though. He does this thing where he makes you feel like youโre different, like youโre the exception. Said something similar to me once, actually. About how I wasnโt like other girls, how he actually liked talking to me.โ She shrugged. โThen a week later I heard him telling his friends I was fun, but nothing serious. Not really his type long-term, just someone to pass the time with.โ
Something cold settled low in your stomach, the words landing far too close to a memory youโd spent a year trying to bury.
โAnyway.โ Kendall smiled again, sickly sweet. โJust thought youโd want to know. In case the patternโs still going. Wouldnโt want you finding out the hard way, like I did.โ
She walked off before you could respond, leaving you standing there, the noise of the post-game crowd suddenly too loud, too much, the old memory rushing back up with a force you hadnโt braced for. Sheโs cute, I guess. Not really my type, though. Too intense. The words youโd carried silently for over a year, the ones youโd never told anyone, sitting right there in your chest again, as sharp as the night youโd first heard them.
โHey.โ Hannahโs voice cut through the noise, concerned. โYou okay? You look like you saw a ghost.โ
โIโm fine.โ Your voice came out tighter than you meant it to, though you didnโt get the chance to elaborate before Garrett appeared from the locker room hallway, still riding the high of the win, grinning as he jogged over.
โHey, weโre all heading to Maloneโs, you in?โ He reached for your hand, easy and familiar, but you pulled back slightly before he could take it, some old defensiveness slamming back into place.
โYeah. Sure.โ Your voice came out flatter than you meant it to, and something in his expression flickered, confusion replacing the earlier excitement, though he didnโt push, letting you fall into step with Hannah and Allie instead as the group made its way toward the diner.
You kept your distance the whole walk over, and through most of the meal too, sitting at the far end of the booth beside Hannah instead of next to Garrett, deflecting his attempts at conversation with short, clipped answers, laughing a beat too late at things that wouldโve made you laugh easily an hour ago. He noticed. You could tell by the way his jaw kept tightening slightly every time you brushed off another question, the confusion in his eyes deepening into something more hurt as the night went on.
By the time the group started splitting off, you were already halfway out the door, murmuring something about being tired, not waiting to see who might follow.
You made it almost two blocks before you heard footsteps jogging up behind you.
โAre you seriously just going to walk away without saying anything?โ Garrettโs voice cut through the cold air, sharper than youโd heard it in a long time.
You stopped, turning to face him, some old instinct to bolt colliding with the exhaustion of trying to keep everything contained all night. โI told you I was tired.โ
โYouโve been ignoring me for two hours, and now youโre bailing without a word. Thatโs not tired, thatโs you shutting me out completely, and Iโd like to know why.โ His voice had an edge you werenโt used to, frustration finally breaking through the careful patience heโd been holding onto at Maloneโs.
โI donโt want to do this right now.โ
โWell, I do. Because I sat in that booth for an hour trying to figure out what I did, running through everything I possibly couldโve said or done wrong, and you wouldnโt even look at me.โ He was closer now, jaw tight, something raw and hurt sitting underneath the anger. โSo no, I donโt think you get to just walk away like this is nothing.โ
โItโs not nothing! Thatโs the problem!โ The words came out louder than you meant them to, months of carefully managed calm finally cracking. โKendall talked to me tonight. She told me you have a pattern. That you make people feel special and then talk about them like theyโre nothing to your friends the second youโre bored.โ
Garrettโs expression shifted, tension flooding in fast. โAnd you believed her?โ
โI didnโt have to believe her, Garrett, because I already knew!โ Your voice cracked, everything finally spilling out at once. โThere was a party almost a year ago. Before any of this. You were charming to me, just like you probably were to Kendall, and then I overheard you telling your friends I was cute, I guess, but too intense. Not really your type. Iโve carried that around for a year, and tonight Kendall basically confirmed itโs just who you are.โ
โI donโt remember that.โ His voice had gone lower, stunned, though the frustration hadnโt fully drained out of it. โYouโre seriously going to stand here and compare something I donโt even remember saying to whatโs happening between us right now?โ
โMaybe itโs the exact same pattern and Iโm just watching it happen in real time!โ
โThatโs insane.โ His voice rose again, sharper now, hurt bleeding into anger. โYouโve spent the last two hours icing me out over something that happened before I even knew your name properly, and instead of just telling me at the rink, you let me sit there for an entire dinner wondering what I did wrong.โ
โI didnโt know how to say it there!โ
โYou couldโve said literally anything! โI need a minute,โ โsomethingโs wrong,โ anything besides going completely cold and making me feel like I did something horrible without even knowing what it was!โ He dragged a hand through his hair, clearly furious now, though there was something devastated underneath it too. โDo you have any idea what that felt like? Watching you shut down like that, having no idea if Iโd hurt you or if you were just done with all of this?โ
โI donโt know what I am right now, okay?โ Tears were streaming freely now, and you didnโt bother wiping them away. โI donโt know how to just turn off a year of being scared of exactly this. Of you deciding Iโm not worth the effort the second it gets complicated.โ
โIโm standing right here! I chased you two blocks in the cold because I couldnโt stand the idea of you thinking I didnโt care enough to come after you!โ His voice cracked slightly on the last part, something raw slipping through. โAnd youโre still acting like Iโm going to disappear the second you turn your back.โ
โMaybe I donโt know how not to!โ
The two of you stood there, breathing hard, the argument hanging in the cold air between you, both of you raw and exposed in a way neither of you had let the other see before.
โI canโt keep proving myself against a ghost,โ Garrett said finally, quieter now, exhausted. โI canโt fix something that happened a year ago, something I donโt even remember. All I can do is show up for you now, and if thatโs not enough, I donโt know what else you want from me.โ
โI donโt know what I want either.โ Your voice had gone small, the anger finally burning out into something more hollow. โI just know I couldnโt sit there tonight pretending I was fine.โ
Garrett was quiet for a long moment, jaw tight, something devastated sitting behind his eyes. โI need some space too, honestly. I donโt really know what to do with any of this right now.โ
The words landed harder than you expected, some part of you having assumed heโd keep chasing regardless, and the realization that he might not this time settled cold and unfamiliar in your chest.
โOkay,โ you said quietly.
Neither of you said anything else. He turned first, walking back the way heโd come without looking back, and you stood there alone on the sidewalk for a long moment before finally continuing toward your dorm, the fight replaying over and over, the first time either of you had actually raised your voice at the other since everything had started, and it left something unsettled and aching in its place that felt very different from the bickering youโd once mistaken for hate.
You made it back to your dorm on autopilot, barely registering the walk, the cold, any of it, the fight still ringing in your ears the whole way. By the time you pushed through the door, the tears youโd been holding back on the sidewalk broke free completely, and you didnโt even manage to get your coat off before your legs gave out slightly, sinking down onto the edge of your bed.
Hannah and Allie were both there, having gotten back from Maloneโs before you, and they were on their feet instantly, expressions shifting from confusion to alarm the second they saw your face.
โHey, hey.โ Hannah dropped down beside you immediately, arm coming around your shoulders. โWhat happened? You left so fast, and then Garrett went after you and neither of you came backโ
โWe had a fight.โ Your voice came out wrecked, barely holding together. โLike, an actual fight. Weโve never done that before. Not really. Not like this.โ
โAbout what?โ Allie crouched in front of you, worry written all over her face, all traces of her usual teasing gone.
โKendall.โ You wiped at your face, though the tears kept coming anyway. โShe told me some stuff after the game, and I just, I shut down. I didnโt say anything the whole time we were at Maloneโs. And Garrett noticed, obviously, and he followed me when I left, and then it just, exploded.โ
โWhat did she say?โ Hannahโs voice had gone careful now, protective.
You told them, the whole thing, the old memory finally spilling out in full, the fight, Garrettโs voice cracking when he said heโd chased you two blocks, the way heโd said he needed space too, right before he turned and walked away. By the time you finished, your voice had gone hoarse, exhaustion pulling at every part of you.
โOh, babe.โ Hannah pulled you into a proper hug, and you let yourself sink into it, some of the tension in your chest finally starting to loosen now that it was out. โIโm so sorry. Thatโs a lot to be carrying, and then to have Kendall dump it back on you like that, tonight of all nights.โ
โI donโt know if I handled it right.โ You pulled back slightly, wiping at your face again. โI probably shouldโve just told him at the rink instead of freezing him out for two hours. I think thatโs part of why it got so bad.โ
โMaybe. Or maybe you needed time to even figure out what you were feeling before you could say it out loud.โ Allieโs voice was gentler than usual, no teasing in it at all. โYou canโt always articulate something the second it happens, especially something thatโs been sitting in you for a year.โ
โHe said he needed space too.โ Your voice cracked again, the words landing heavier the second time around. โI donโt know what that means. If that means heโs actually stepping back, or if he just needs a night, orโ
โI donโt think youโre going to figure that out tonight,โ Hannah said gently, squeezing your shoulder. โI think tonight you just need to breathe, and let yourself be upset, and we can figure out the rest tomorrow. Okay?โ
You nodded, though the uncertainty sat heavy in your chest regardless, the image of Garrett walking away without looking back playing over and over no matter how hard you tried to push it aside.
You woke up the next morning with a headache from crying, the kind of foggy, hollow feeling that came from too many emotions and not enough sleep. Hannah and Allie were both still asleep in your room, having stayed the night rather than leave you alone, and for a moment you just lay there, staring at the ceiling, replaying the fight until it felt less like a memory and more like a bruise you kept pressing on.
Then, slowly, you felt something in you start to shut the door on it.
It was familiar, in a way. The same instinct youโd leaned on for a year before any of this started, the one that let you turn hurt into indifference, vulnerability into distance. Youโd gotten good at it once. You could get good at it again.
By the time Hannah stirred an hour later, you were already up, showered, dressed, moving through your morning like it was any other day.
โHey.โ Hannah blinked at you, sitting up slowly. โYouโre, up. And dressed. How are you feeling?โ
โFine.โ You zipped your bag, not quite meeting her eyes. โI have an early lecture.โ
โYou donโt have to go if youโre not up for it. I can text your professor something, orโ
โIโm fine, Han. Really.โ Your voice came out flat, controlled, nothing like the wreck youโd been the night before. โIt happened. Itโs not the end of the world. Iโll figure it out.โ
Hannah studied you for a second, something uncertain crossing her face. โYou donโt have to pretend youโre okay just because itโs daylight now.โ
โIโm not pretending.โ You slung your bag over your shoulder, already halfway to the door. โI just donโt want to talk about it right now. I have to go.โ
You left before she could push further, walking to class with your headphones in, not really listening to anything, just needing the noise to drown out your own thoughts. You told yourself it was fine. You told yourself youโd been managing perfectly well before Garrett, that you didnโt actually need whatever this was, that going back to how things used to be wouldnโt be that hard.
It mostly worked, for a few hours. You made it through your lecture without really absorbing a word of it, made it through a shift at Maloneโs on autopilot, smiling at customers, taking orders, existing in the shape of yourself without actually feeling much of anything underneath it. Numb felt better than the alternative. Numb you could manage.
Hannah caught up with you that evening, waiting outside Maloneโs when your shift ended, arms crossed against the cold.
โOkay, Iโve given you the whole day,โ she said, falling into step beside you. โBut I donโt buy the fine act. Not for one second.โ
โIโm handling it.โ
โYouโre not handling it, youโre doing the thing.โ Hannahโs voice was gentle but firm. โThe thing where you decide itโs easier to feel nothing than feel something painful. I watched you do it before. Iโm not going to just stand here and watch you do it again.โ
โMaybe itโs easier this way.โ
โEasier isnโt the same as better.โ She stopped walking, turning to face you properly. โYou cried for an hour last night. That wasnโt nothing. You donโt get to just decide today that none of it matters because feeling it is inconvenient.โ
โIโm not saying it doesnโt matter.โ Your voice cracked slightly despite your best efforts to keep it even. โIโm saying I donโt know how else to survive it right now except by not feeling it at all.โ
Hannahโs expression softened at that, some of the frustration giving way to something more worried. โThatโs not surviving it. Thatโs just delaying it. And itโs going to catch up to you eventually, probably at the worst possible time.โ
You didnโt have a response for that, mostly because some small, quiet part of you knew she was right, even as the rest of you clung to the numbness like it was the only thing keeping you upright.
โI just need a little more time being like this,โ you said finally, quiet. โIโm not ready to actually feel all of it yet.โ
Hannah watched you for a long moment, clearly torn between pushing further and letting it go, before she finally sighed, looping her arm through yours instead. โOkay. But Iโm not leaving you alone in it. Numb or not, Iโm still here.โ
A few days later
Hannah found Garrett in the library a few days later, hunched over a textbook he clearly wasnโt reading, phone face down beside him like he was actively avoiding it. Sheโd texted him about a study session for their shared econ class, mostly as an excuse to actually talk to him, and heโd agreed almost too quickly, like heโd been looking for a reason to leave his room.
โYou look terrible,โ Hannah said, sliding into the seat across from him.
โThanks. Really building my confidence here.โ
โI mean it kindly.โ She pulled out her own notes, though she wasnโt really planning on studying either. โHow are you doing? Actually.โ
Garrett exhaled, dragging a hand down his face. โIโve been better.โ
โSheโs not doing great either, for what itโs worth.โ Hannah watched his expression carefully, catching the way something flickered across his face at that, quick and pained before he tried to smooth it back over. โSheโs been throwing herself into work and classes. Barely eating properly. Wonโt really talk about it.โ
โYeah.โ He didnโt elaborate, just nodded, eyes dropping to the closed textbook in front of him.
โI donโt really know what to do, Hannah,โ he added a moment later, quieter. โI keep replaying the fight over and over, and I donโt know if reaching out makes it better or worse. I told her I needed space, and I meant it in the moment, but now it just feels like I made everything worse.โ
โDid you mean it? The needing space part?โ
โI guess.โ He shrugged, not really looking at her.
Hannah frowned slightly, waiting for him to say more, but he didnโt, just sat there, quiet and withdrawn in a way that wasnโt really like him.
โOkay, thatโs not really an answer.โ She leaned forward. โDo you actually want space from her, or did you just say that because you were hurt and didnโt know what else to say?โ
โI donโt know. Maybe youโre right.โ He said it flatly, no real conviction behind it, and Hannahโs frustration flickered at the lack of pushback.
โThatโs not what I asked. I asked what you actually think, not what sounds agreeable.โ
โI think whatever you think is probably right.โ He rubbed at his eyes, exhausted. โYou know her better than I do. If you think I messed it up, I probably messed it up.โ
โGarrett.โ Hannahโs voice sharpened slightly, some genuine irritation slipping through now. โI need you to actually engage with this instead of just agreeing with whatever I say. Thatโs not helpful to either of you.โ
โIโm not trying to be unhelpful.โ
โYouโre being passive. Thereโs a difference.โ She sat back, studying him carefully. โYouโve barely said a real sentence since I sat down. Youโre just nodding along to everything like you donโt actually have an opinion, and thatโs honestly kind of scaring me, because itโs not like you at all.โ
Garrett was quiet for a moment, something flickering behind his eyes, before he finally exhaled, some of the flat resignation cracking slightly. โI donโt know what to say that actually matters right now. Every version of an opinion I have just circles back to the same thing, that I hurt her without meaning to, and I donโt know how to fix something I donโt even fully understand.โ
โThatโs better. Thatโs an actual answer.โ Hannahโs voice softened slightly. โDo you want to fix it, though? Thatโs the real question. Not whether you think you can, just whether you want to.โ
โOf course I want to.โ His voice cracked slightly, more emotion slipping through than heโd let show all conversation. โI just donโt know if she wants me to. I donโt know if she even wants to hear from me right now.โ
โI think sheโs scared you donโt want to hear from her, honestly.โ Hannah studied him carefully. โYouโre sitting here agreeing with everything like youโve already decided this is over, and meanwhile sheโs doing the exact same thing on her end, assuming youโve already checked out. Youโre both just quietly giving up in parallel instead of actually talking to each other.โ
Garrett sat with that for a long moment, something shifting behind his eyes, more present now than the flat agreement from earlier. โI havenโt given up.โ
โThen stop acting like you have.โ Hannah reached across the table, squeezing his arm gently. โI donโt think either of you actually wants this to be over. I think youโre both just really bad at being scared out loud.โ
Garrett looked up at her, something raw and uncertain finally breaking through the earlier numbness. โWhat do I even say to her? โSorry I got mad, I still donโt remember the thing that started all of this, but I miss youโ feels insufficient.โ
โMaybe it doesnโt have to be perfect. Maybe it just has to be honest.โ Hannah shrugged slightly. โI donโt think sheโs expecting some big speech. I think sheโs expecting you to disappear, honestly, based on the way sheโs been acting the past few days. Proving her wrong about that might matter more than finding the exact right words.โ
Garrett sat with that for a long moment, something shifting behind his eyes, thoughtful now instead of just exhausted. โYeah. Maybe.โ
Hannah watched him carefully, some of the earlier tension in her chest easing slightly at the shift in his expression. โJust, donโt wait too long to figure it out. I donโt think either of you can keep doing this forever without it catching up eventually.โ
โYeah.โ He nodded slowly, glancing down at his phone still sitting face down on the table, like he was finally considering actually picking it up. โI hear you.โ
He was quiet for a second, gathering his things slowly, before he glanced back up at Hannah, something more serious settling over his expression.
โCan you do something for me?โ
โDepends what it is.โ
โJust, keep an eye on her. For me.โ His voice had gone quieter, more careful. โI know thatโs probably weird to ask, given everything, and Iโm not trying to use you as some kind of messenger or spy or whatever. I just, I know youโre closer to her than anyone, and I want to make sure someoneโs actually watching out for her while I figure out what to do.โ
โI always keep an eye on her, Garrett. Sheโs my best friend.โ Hannahโs voice softened slightly, though there was no judgment in it.
โI know. I just mean, more than usual. Sheโs not eating properly, you said. And sheโs throwing herself into everything so she doesnโt have to sit still. I donโt want her disappearing into that and nobody catching it in time.โ He rubbed the back of his neck, clearly a little uncomfortable with how much he was admitting. โI care about her a lot. Probably more than Iโve let either of you fully see. I just donโt have the right to check on her myself right now, not after everything, so Iโm asking you to do it instead.โ
Something in Hannahโs expression softened further at that, genuine warmth breaking through the earlier concern. โYeah. Of course. Iโll take care of her.โ
โThank you.โ He exhaled, some of the tension in his shoulders easing slightly, like just saying it out loud had helped. Then, quieter, almost hesitant: โAre you okay? With all of this. I know it probably puts you in a weird spot, caught in the middle of both of us.โ
Hannah blinked, surprised by the question, something touched crossing her face. โIโm okay. Tired, maybe. Itโs hard watching two people I care about hurting and not really being able to fix it for either of you.โ
โYeah. I get that.โ He gave her a small, genuine smile, the first real one sheโd seen from him in days. โFor what itโs worth, thank you. For actually caring about both of us instead of picking a side.โ
โThereโs no sides to pick. Youโre both being ridiculous in exactly the same way.โ She said it lightly, though there was real affection underneath it, and Garrett let out a short laugh, some of the heaviness in the air finally breaking.
โFair.โ He slung his bag over his shoulder, standing, though he lingered a moment longer. โSeriously, though. Thank you. For today. For actually being honest with me instead of just letting me spiral.โ
โAnytime.โ Hannah smiled, watching him head toward the library exit, something a little steadier in his posture now than when heโd walked in. She sat there a moment longer after he left, gathering her own things slowly, already thinking about how she was going to check in on you tonight without making it feel like an interrogation, determined to hold up her end of the promise sheโd just made.
'you're the girl in garretts lockscreen' ! garrett graham x childhoodbestfriend!reader
summary .แ you finally meet visit the off campus house and meet garrett's friends, but not in the way either of you imagined.
notes .แ maybe cringe??? idk...
"You're not waiting outside. End of"
His words were stern as he said them, not harsh, no, never harsh when it came to you, but his tone gave no room for discussion.
"G, Please. I'll be fine" You cringed at the slight whine that echoed through your words, pleading to your best friend in front of you
"No"
"Garrett!"
"No."
The lock to the off campus house clicked as his words echoed in your ears, Garrett's hand tight on the doorknob as he pushed it open. The warmth of his shared house flowed out, contrasting sharply with the biting cold of the winter weather outside.
"Get in, it's fucking freezing. You're gonna catch a cold" He sighed, tilting his head towards the door as he turned to you.
He rolled his eyes as you made no effort to move, as stubborn as you had been since elementary school. Garrett watched as you tried your best not to shiver, the cold nipping at your cheeks.
His hand swiftly came down around you, softly resting on the small of your back as he basically pushed you inside.
You hated how much you liked the warmth of the house, the multiple layers of clothes you had thrown on yourself like armour now seeming unnecessary.
Scanning the inside of the house, your eyes drifted slowly over the entrance. It looked exactly like you had imagined. Red solo cups and beer bottles resting on the coffee table, pillows haphazardly strewn across the sofa, a led lit air hockey table standing out against the dark wood floors resting next to a keg.
Your eyes almost rolled out of your head at how predictable it was.
"Happy now?" Garrett teased, closing the door behind him and placing his keys down. "No" You quipped back almost instantly
When you woke up this morning, the last place you pictured yourself was standing in the living room of the house Garrett shared with his 3 friends.
Garrett had waited for you outside your mid-day class, pulling you sideways the second you walked out of the lecture hall like some stalker waiting for his victim.
You let out a gasp as he pulled you into the corner of the hallway, grinning down at you like he hadn't just manhandled you into him. You listened to him drone on and on about hockey and practice, clearly where he had just come from, his dark curls still damp against his forehead as they swayed and his skin sticky from sweat.
It was only when you were dragged up the steps of his house that you realised grabbing lunch apparently meant needing to go home first. A detail Garrett had somehow failed to mention.
Despite being on campus for a few weeks now, you hadn't yet payed a visit to his humble abode. But that was not due to lack of him trying.
Ever since arriving at Briar, he badgered you constantly about coming over to his place, wanting to be in the solace of his room alone with you since you had banned him from staying in your dorm out of worry of making your freshly new roommate uncomfortable with his presence.
It's not that you didn't want to be with Garrett. Never that.
But you would be lying if you said you weren't slightly intimidated by the prospect of meeting his fellow hockey player roomates.
You wouldn't say you were a shy girl, per say, but you had heard whispers around campus of Garrett and his friends constantly since the semester started.
Whispers that clearly indicated that they were far, far from nobodies.
If you hadn't known Garrett since you were practically in diapers, you'd probably be scared shitless of him the most out of all of them.
Garrett didn't mean to trick you into coming over to his house that day. Well, at least not really.
He did truthfully want to grab lunch with you. Just after he showered, changed, and hopefully coaxed you into napping with him.
"Baby, they aren't home. Won't be for a while, don't worry." Garrett whispered into your ear, his minty breath warm against your neck as he dipped his head down behind you. Referencing to the fact his roomates were out discussing plays for their next hockey game with the new rookies, a meetup Garrett was glad he missed out on the planning of.
They may have still asked him to come. Multiple times. He may have declined. Multiple times.
"I'm not worried" You replied, almost too quickly.
He raised his eyebrows at your comment, clearly as convinced as you were by your own words. Which wasn't at all.
"Cmon" Garrett said as he began grabbing your hand before leading towards the staircase.
If you weren't so distracted looking around at his house and dissecting every detail of your new environment, you'd have asked where he was taking you.
However, your non-existent question was answered as he led you through a hallway and into a room.
His room.
You could tell as soon as you entered.
It had Garrett Graham written all over it. Well, literally. The street sign detailed with his name being the same one you had seen in his room from home.
It smelled like him too. Cologne, aftershave and mint.
Of course, it was clean. Bed made perfectly, desk neat, light filtering through his mahogany brown blinds.
A white picture frame stood out against the cool greys and browns hues of his decor, hand painted hearts littering the frame. You remember painting that him years ago, before he left for college. Assuming he was going to fill it with a photo of his friends or high school hockey team, you left the insert blank.
But instead, the picture that lay inside the glass, was you.
You remember the day it was taken. Garrett was fiddling around with your digital camera, promising he wasn't going to break it. He turned the camera around so it was facing the both of you, reaching his hands out and snapping a selfie of you both as he kissed you on the cheek.
As you looked around the room, the door clicked behind you, Garrett immediately taking the chance to wrap his hands around your waist while he stood behind you.
You immediately pulled away, looking back at him with mock disgust.
"You're sweaty" You declared, regarding the fact he had just came back from hockey practice.
"You can't even feel me!" He exclaimed, gesturing to the multitude of layers you had on due to the cold. "Yeah, but i can smell you" You quipped, even though he somehow didn't smell as bad as he should from skating around in a rink all day.
"Ok, rude. I'm gonna go shower then. Happy?" Garrett asked, sarcastic in his tone as he shrugged off his hoodie.
"No, you said you just needed to grab something quickly before we get lunch" You accused, watching as he walked over to his dresser.
"Well, you've made me insecure now" He stated, turning around to look back at you.
"No i haven't. You are never insecure."
"You're right. I'm not" Your breath hitched as he pulled his black shirt over his head, leaving him shirtless a few feet away from you, a bright grin on his face.
It wasn't the first time you had seen Garrett shirtless. Probably not even the hundredth. But it never didn't make you feel giddy inside, especially since his skin was glistening as the fractured light shone into his room.
"Now, can you stop standing there like a deer in the headlights and sit down or something" He joked, the fact that you were still standing right in front of his door reminding you that you hadn't moved since you had entered.
Suddenly, it dawned on you.
"You planned this whole thing didn't you? You didn't need to just grab something, did you?" You accused, wagging your finger in his face as you approached him.
His face then shifted to one struck with mock guilt, teasing. "I'm guilty. Take me away officer. Make it quick, please." Reaching his hands up as if he were about to get handcuffed.
"You're not funny," You replied
"I'm pretty funny"
You rolled your eyes as you made your way to his bed, sitting down on the soft comforter. "Hurry up" You said, placing your book bag onto his floor.
"What, don't wanna join me?" Garrett asked, only him knowing he meant the idea of you showering with him as a little more than a joke.
You ignored his question, facepalming as you groaned.
You heard him laugh across the room, his footsteps echoing towards his bed where you were sat. Your eyes raised, watching Garrett as he approached, clad only in his grey sweatpants.
"I'll be just a minute, bathroom is down the hall. Call out if you need me" You nodded softly at him, his constant need to make sure you're okay apparent in his sincere words.
He gleamed at your nod, reaching down to hold the back of your head softly as he kissed you on the forehead. "Atta girl"
You really tried not to watch him walk away. But the phrase often muttered by your roommate 'hate to see him go, love to watch him leave' echoed annoyingly in your head
The prominent muscles of his back rippled as he reached for the doorknob, his gold chain gleaming as it rested above his tattoo, every movement creating a tidal wave of muscle and strength.
You released a breath you didn't know you were holding as you heard the door close after he had left the room.
The heat from what you were hoping was the warmth of his room and not that interaction began creeping up your spine, causing you to pull off all the layers it took until you were left only in your long sleeve shirt.
As you stood alone in his room, you felt yourself drift over to the photo frame you had been staring at earlier. A smile creeping onto your face before you could register it as you slowly picked up the frame.
You can't believe he had a photo of you framed in his room, standing proudly on his bedside table.
It was only then you began to notice the small reminders of you in his bedroom. A note you had wrote him in middle school you had completely forgotten about tacked onto his wall, a candle sat on his dresser that he always told you smelled just like your perfume, the soft pink blanket you had left in his car months ago thrown over the back of his chair.
The soft chirping of birds outside his window sang in your ears, your head turning to watch as they danced through the branches of the trees. You found yourself smiling at their actions, flying in the air joyful and utterly free.
"G, I'm gonna fuckin kill you for bailing. Those rookies are fucking insufferab-"
Your neck almost broke by how swiftly you turned it, shock and genuine horror struck across your features.
Stood in Garrett's door was a tall blonde, his jaw slack to the floor and looking just as shocked as you were. Your eyes swiftly scanned his frame, a Briar hockey hoodie resting on his body and his hand outstretched to the door knob he had just rattled open.
"Sorry, sorry! Fuck." The boy cursed, his face now painted with guilt as he cringed at himself.
You nearly jumped as he went to slam the door closed, interrupting his movements. "No, no. It's ok. I'm just waiting for Garrett to shower" You explained, walking a few feet closer to the door.
The boy's eyebrows raised at your words, before a look of recognition struck wildly through his face.
"You're her!" He practically shouted, removing his hand from the doorknob to point at you.
You almost jumped at the volume of his voice, confusion washing through you. "Her?" You quizzed
"Yes! You're the girl in Garrett's lockscreen!" He started, what seemed to be excitement lighting up his expression, moving his finger to point to the picture frame on Garrett's bedside table "And the photo, You're her!"
Before you could even conjure up anytime of response to his words, another voice cut through the air
"Dean, bro, what the fuck are you screaming about?" Another boy said, showing up behind the blonde.
"Oh my god" The brunette exclaimed, clearly recognising you as well the second his eyes drifted to you, now standing feeling embarrassingly awkward as you stood in Garrett's room.
"Garrett talks about you all the fucking time, since we've known him. I cannot believe we are finally meeting you" The blonde said, tumbling into the room and wrapping you into a hug, eliciting a laugh from you that finally made you feel the tiniest bit less horrified by the situation.
"Tucker! Bro! Come here!" The brunette behind the boy shouted, smiling as he followed behind the blonde into the room.
At that same moment, steam rolled out from the bathroom door, Garrett's curls tight and dark from the water as he ran his hand through his hair, his body now clad in a dark grey teeshirt and black sweatpants.
Due to the sound of the water cascading from the shower head, the shouts of his roommates hadn't cut echoed through the noise, leaving him completely oblivious to the scene unravelling in his own bedroom.
So, he was utterly horrified as he watched the doorframe of his room now swung completely open and Dean's voiced echoing through the hallway from his bedroom.
"What the fuck are you doing?"
Garrett's voice sliced sharply through the air, his eyes set on the fact that Dean had his arms wrapped tightly around you, fucking hugging you.
Dean jumped as he heard Garrett's voice, turning to find him standing in the door of his room.
"Uh, hugging my new best-friend?" Dean said as if it were obvious, his voice contradicted by the fact he was slowly backing away from you at the sight of his friend's less than happy expression.
As if you weren't overstimulated enough, steps began bounding into down the hallway, gradually getting louder as they reached Garrett's room.
"What! What did i miss?" Tucker exclaimed, out of breath from running up the stairs from the kitchen with a deep fear of fomo.
His face mimicked Dean's exact expression as he noticed you, his jaw dropping in the same shocked way before he shouted
"You're her!"

Ever since you started attending Briar, you and your older sister Allie have gotten closer than ever. She took you under her wing the second you arrived at Briar. You integrated into her friend group with ease, however, feelings of insecurity and intimidation couldnโt help but seep in when you found yourself comparing yourself to your sister all the time.

ER wallflower - jack abbot.
in which jack abbot is the first to notice the wallflower resident of the ER.
summary; reader has always been used to being left behind, and eventually stopped trying to make space for themselves. she doesn't think anyone notices her, until jack abbot starts paying attention.
warnings; fem!reader. use of y/n, use of she/her, probably medical inaccuracies bc all my medical knowledge comes from shows lol, also NO AI used !!! i use em dashes sometimes but i PROMISE this is strictly a no-ai account!! also reader has a cat bc i said so
i might make a part two of this tbh but i wont label it as a series bc then my brain will start procastinating and i'll lose all motivation to write it LOL
The noise of the ER buzzed around you. The muscles in your neck ached, begging to be stretched and massaged. One of your hands came up to gently rub on your neck, the other slowly typing out the chart of your latest patient.
Some of the interns were huddled together, giggling to each other about something. It had become a habit of yours to listen in on themโ on whatever gossip they had going on this time. Sometimes, you liked to pretend that you were part of it. That you got to gossip with friends just like they do.
That'd never been the case for you. In your intern year, you were the only one. Already feeling alienated, you struggled to find your place in the ER. Everyone seemed to already know who they were, aside from you.
For a while, you tried. You tried to include yourself. You joined the others when they went for a beer after a heavy shift. But as time went on, you didn't feel any closer to belonging. It didn't feel like anyone was making room for you either. So, you stopped showing up. And no one said anything.
Now, you just worked. You took all the patients no one else wanted. You stayed a little later to make sure another coworker could get home on time. You helped in traumas, then slipped away as soon as it was done.
This routine worked. It'd been your routine for years now. It wasn't that you were a bad doctor, no. You just didn't fit in.
A small wince covered your features as you rubbed your neck again. You truly couldn't wait to get off shift, and go home. You know your cat must already be sitting on the kitchen counter, waiting for the sight of you walking through the door.
"Nice catch, earlier." You heard a gruff voice behind youโ one you recognized as your attending, Jack Abbot. Being the eavesdropper you are, you waited to hear the response of the person he was complimenting. You wondered if they'd be humble or gleeful. You know that if you were complimented like that, you'd be over the moon.
The light of the monitor made your eyes burn a little, but you just had to push through this last chart.
Then, you felt a hand tap your shoulder.
"Kid?" Dr. Abbot hummed, looking down at you, the corner of his lips quirking into a small smile. "Did'ya hear me?"
Your eyes go wide, and you swear you can feel your heart jumping up into your throat, making your breath hitch. He was talking to you. No one ever bothered talking to you, not if it wasn't necessary.
"Iโ er- sorry, what did you say, Dr. Abbot?" You cleared your throat, trying to get your heart to return to a normal pace, the chart all forgotten now.
He watched you for a moment, his gaze softening from playful to a more gentle one. "I said..." His hands gripped both ends of his stethoscope, the one he always had around his neck, "Good catch earlier. With the silent heart attack patient. Not many of us could've caught that."
The apples of your cheeks shifted into a deep red color, your eyes darting from him to your keyboard, then to your water bottle, the floor, keyboard, him...
"Oh- um, yeah, thank you, sir." You nodded in response, already mentally degrading yourself for being so awkward. This is your attending, for gods sake. You should be professional.
But that easy grin rested on his face, and he nodded. "Oh, sure, kid. You're one hell of a doctor. Keep it up." He gently squeezed your shoulder, and walked off. And that was that. He complimented you like it was nothing.
That simple compliment swam in your head the entire day. It made you smile as you prepared your lunch for work at home that evening. It made you hum with content as you settled into bed, curtains drawn shut to hide the rising sun.
Good catch earlier.
It started happening more and more. Abbot would pull you into traumas with him, let you take the lead on them, and then give you a small compliment, and one of those warm smiles. He'd linger when you charted, always trying to spark up small talk.
You never came out of your shell, though. It was driving him insane. He tried everything. But you always shut it down and got back to work. For a while, he thought you might just dislike him. But he could see the small smiles you gave him, and the pink tint in your cheeks at his compliments.
So, he tried asking the other residents about you. Imagine his shock when no one knew anything about you. Everyone just responded off-handedly.
'Oh, Y/N? Yeah, she's a quiet one. Dunno much about her.'
'Y/N? Great doctor. Haven't talked to her much.'
'Saw her a few times in her first year of residency. Then she stopped coming out.'
No one knew anything. That's what made Jack perk up a little more. He tried to subtly keep notes on you throughout the day. See who you spoke to. If maybe you left with someone. Maybe discussed patients. But he got nothing.
You were all alone.
The last straw was when he spotted you slipping into the abandoned wing of the hospital, settling yourself on the dusty staircase, and opening your lunchbox. You even hid away to eat.
He had to fix that.
So, he became a little more persistent. He'd ask you to eat lunch with him, and before you had a chance to decline, he'd already led you into the breakroom, making you sit down with one pinned stare.
He could tell you were a little anxious. So he always made the first move. He'd ask questions that required more than a nod for an answer, just to get you talking. And he would listen. Full attention, eyes glued to you the entire time you spoke.
No dismissive nods, no hums of acknowledgement in a way to just make you feel heard, no. He made sure you knew he was listening. When you mentioned your cat, he asked for its name. He asked to see pictures. When you made an offhanded complaint about the hospital coffee, he asked what your favorite coffee place was.
The next day, a coffee from said place was waiting for you.

jason todd x spy!reader summary: a world class spy and a vigilante have been married for five or six years, only to see their marriage come crashing down when their double lives are revealed contains: swearing, violence, mentions of weapons, reader is a hit woman/spy, inspired by the 2005 movie "mr & mrs smith" word count: 3.8k a/n: genesis (my jason todd f1 au) chapter out soon
Five or six years agoโฆ
The day you met Jason Todd was one youโd never forget.ย
Youโd been hired to take out a secret service agent whoโd fled to Barcelona. Police were closing in on you and you needed a cover story fast. Choosing the first young eligible bachelor you could find, you made your way over to him confidently, saying a silent prayer that he did not smell the gunpowder on your blouse. He was tall, taller than you even in heels, and he had the kind of build that could make a woman weak in the knees. Or maybe that was just the ligament you tore last week running from a bombing. You wrapped a hand around his bicep and smiled devilishly at the police officer, who just scoffed and walked away.
Jason was on his first ever vacation and wanted nothing to do with vigilantism for the next week. He wanted to get away from that life and away from that crowd. Butโฆhe was still human. So when a beautiful woman ran up to him, pretending to be his partner while the police interrogated her, all he could do was nod along dumbly. She had a mischievous look in her eye, something that screamed danger and excitement, but comfort at the same time. Jason was almost reminded of Selina Kyle, Catwoman, but he hoped this woman aired more on the legal side of things than the aforementioned.ย
Once the police had left, you turned to Jason to apologize and hopefully find yourself on the next flight out of the country, but he just looked at you with a stupid smile that made your heart flutter. He bought you a drink, told you how beautiful you were one too many times, and one thing led to another and you woke up in his hotel room.ย
You couldnโt say you regretted it though, because that week you spent together in Barcelona was the best of your life. Your mission was a success, you had gotten laid, and had an extremely attractive man following you around like a lost puppy.ย
You werenโt surprised when he proposed three months later.
It wasnโt like you to rush into things, but he seemed like a really great guy, okay? Plus, your agency had just announced your transfer to Gotham and it wouldnโt hurt to have a cover story. Youโd play the perfect wife, oblivious and innocent, praying that if you stayed out of his business heโd stay out of yours. You never asked why he came home at four in the morning and you never mentioned the limp. In return, he never looked too closely into how often you went on โbusiness tripsโ or why your cell phone changed models each month.ย
The two of you were living your best lives, willfully ignorant of each other.
Present dayโฆ
The morning started off like any other.ย
Jason was fast asleep when you got up. You showered, made breakfast, put a few things in the safe behind the freezer he didnโt know about, and took your laundry out of the dryer. Your boss had called you in earlier than normal, so you had left for work already by the time Jason woke up. It wasnโt unusual for the two of you to live like this, existing in a shared space rather than living together in a home. Jason eventually made his way to the manor, having been called in about a drug smuggling operation that was supposed to happen tonight. He knew it was major, otherwise Bruce wouldโve handled it himself without the help of the team.
Jason was just about to text you that he wasnโt going to make it for dinner when he got that exact message from you. It was convenient for him, so why should he read into it?
Ten hours later, you were laid flat on your stomach atop a building, staring through the lens of a sniper rifle. Next to you lay your laptop, feeding you live coverage from the security cameras inside the warehouse. According to your boss, at 8pm sharp a kingpin youโd identified as Samara Fray was going to make a very rare public appearance. Sheโd been linked to hundreds of assaults and deaths over the last year and had made a fortune smuggling drugs to and from countries. But more importantly, she had information about your organization and she was now working for the enemy. It shouldโve been a quick, clean kill, but a family of bats was about to make your life ten times more difficult.
Jason, on the other hand, was stuck living by Batmanโs โno kill ruleโ for this mission. He was stationed on a rooftop just barely out of your line of sight. Dick sat next to him, talking away while they awaited Bruceโs signal. When it came, they sprung into action, vaulting over a fence and breaking the chain lock on the door. Shouting rang from inside as Jason kicked the door down, coming face to face with the woman he was after.
You watched with a scowl as Red Hood fought your target, and you really tried your best to wait for a clear shot, but you were never really known for your patience. Pulling the trigger, you swore as you missed and nipped the shoulder of the vigilante who looked around frantically trying to spot his shooter. You looked back at your security cam footage and saw Samara running towards a van near the river. Gunfire still echoed from the warehouse as you turned your focus back towards your scope and locked back on to Samara. Taking another shot, you watched her yelp out in pain, but youโd still missed any vital organs. She ducked into a van which you already could tell would be bulletproof and you watched in dismay as your target fled the scene.ย
A voice crackled through your earpiece. It was your boss informing you to forget Samara and to take the shot on Red Hood and any other vigilante in the area. There was enough prize money on the three of them to make up for your failed attempt at the drug lord. So adjusting your position, you focused on Red Hood. He stood at the center of a pile of bodies, all unconscious and bruised, shouting aggressively to Nightwing. You took another shot, watching the vigilantes duck for cover.ย
Letting out another exasperated grunt, you shook your head trying to regain your focus. You followed the three men as they made a swift escape, each of them looking just as frustrated as you were at the failed mission. You continued to watch as they scaled a fire escape up to a nearby rooftop and just as you were about to take your shot on Red Hood, one that this time you wouldnโt miss, he pulled off his helmet.
Through the lens of your rifle, you stared at your husband Jason Todd as he pulled the bullet you had shot at him out of his armor.ย
Scrambling, you quickly packed up your things and left the rooftop, desperate to get home before your partner did. With an order to take out Red Hood, the same man you had been married to for years, you had to ensure youโd be home before he was to prepare.ย
Jason stared at the bullet in disbelief. He had shot a lot of rounds in his life and he knew just about every bullet type by heart. So you can imagine his shock when he found that he had been shot with the same one of a kind ammunition only he carried. It didnโt take long for him to put two and two together, he was the son of a world class detective after all.ย
When he arrived home, he was slightly unnerved by just how quiet everything was. He rounded the corner to the kitchen quickly, searching for you. Your car was parked in the driveway next to his motorcycle like always, and Jason knew that you were home.ย
โHoney?โ he called out, bringing a hand to the gun on his hip. โWhere are you at, sweetheart?โ
For several moments, there was nothing but silence. Just as Jason was about to enter your bedroom, the smell of gasoline stopped him. Turning around, he met your eyes.
โHey, baby,โ you smiled, gun pointed at the crease in his brow. โWhatcha doing home so early?โ
โCould ask you the same thing,โ Jason said slowly, pulling his own weapon from its holster. โYou wanna put that down, doll? Or are we gonna have a problem?โ
โNothing but a little domestic dispute,โ you muttered before firing two shots at your husband.ย
Jason ducked behind the counter, cocking his gun and taking a shot at the window next to you. You turned and ran for the front door, only to fall when he grabbed your ankle to stop you. You kicked him harshly in the head, grabbing a shard of glass and lodging it into the hand wrapped around your leg.
โFUCK!โ he yelled, releasing his grip. โSweetheart, letโs just talk about this.โ
โWhatโs there to talk about, you psycho!โ you shouted back, grabbing a lighter from the counter and continuing your sprint to the front door. You reached to turn the handle only to be stopped by a bullet piercing through the wooden frame.
โI canโt let you go, doll, you know that.โ Jason approached you, gun still aimed at your head. โSo what are you, CIA? FBI? Private investigation?โ
Sliding a hand to the lighter in your pocket, you answered him with a smile. โI donโt work for the government, if thatโs what youโre thinking.โ
โThen why are you trying to kill me, sweetheart?โย
โOh itโs nothing personal, baby,โ you said sincerely. โJust following orders.โ
You threw the lighter on the ground, sparking the gasoline trail you had left before Jason arrived home. While your kitchen went up in flames, you took your chance to slip out the front door and make a dash for your car, ignoring the gun shots behind you.ย
Shaking off any sense of regret from setting your house (and husband) on fire, you jumped into your car and sped down the street. You didnโt make it far before Jasonโs own bike pulled up beside you, a gun in his hand. He shot through your window, narrowly missing your head as the bullet pierced through the driverโs side window. Ducking your head, you aggressively yanked the wheel towards Jason, ramming the side of your car into his bike and making him jump off. But Jason shot out your tires and you cursed yourself for forgetting to get bulletproof ones. You could see Jason approaching you in your rear view mirror and you hastily reached to load the gun you kept in your glove compartment.ย
His clothes were slightly charred and Jason looked angrier than you had ever seen him. He reached into the car to grab you, but you shot at his shoulder once again, causing him to curse and stutter backwards in pain. You climbed out of the passenger side and sprinted as far as you could, dialing your friendโs number at the same time.ย
You had been staying with Selina Kyle for the better half of a week while you tried to figure out how to kill your husband. Selina refused to get directly involved, but she managed to give you a bit of advice. Sheโd been in an on again off again relationship with Bruce Wayne since before you could remember, and she knew leading a double life wasnโt easy. But it wasnโt like Jason was a cop, and he wasnโt nearly as prudish as Bruce (her words, not yours). You still had to kill him though, or at least thatโs what you told yourself.
Attempting to take out Jason on his home turf was stupid and you werenโt going to pretend otherwise. But you didnโt have much of a choice. He hadnโt shown his face and once your boss had caught on to the fact that you were married to Red Hood, you were given a 48hr deadline to confirm the kill or it was your head on the chopping block. You were now down to 16 hours. The Wayne Mansion was far larger than you remembered from the few times youโd been since you married Jason. Youโd tried earlier to hack their security feed, but whoever set it up was far better than youโd imagined and hacking it was hopeless. You would have to go in blind.
Jason watched you approach the mansion on the security cameras from over Timโs shoulder. Just about every family member was gathered here today, knowing that youโd be coming to kill him. However, Bruce had refused to get involved and banned the rest of his kids from engaging as well, so everyone was merely here for entertainment purposes. Jason was actually kind of glad theyโd be left out of this. He knew his family wouldnโt kill you and neither would he, but there was no saying you would show them the same mercy.ย
When you kicked down the door to the mansion, you called out Jasonโs name, desperate to get this over with and be on your way. As you searched each room for the man, you couldnโt help but start to second guess whether or not you could really kill him. There was a reason you had married him after all, it wasnโt like you hated the guy. But he was your mission and as far as you were aware, you were his.ย
โHey sweetheart,โ Jason said from behind you. Whipping around you fired a shot at the first moving object you saw, which ended up being just a bat. Down in the cave below, the rest of the family was watching in shock and horror at just how fast you had tried to kill him. Dick made some joke about a psychotic sister in law and Stephanie tried not to think about all the secrets you two had whispered in face masks and under shared blankets.
โCome out Jay, stop being a pussy!โ you yelled down the hall, trying to find where he had gone.ย
โPromise you wonโt shoot me?โ he asked.
You scoffed, but agreed anyway, placing your gun back at your side. Jason walked out with his hands up and you fought every urge in your body to kiss him shoot him.
โHow long have you been doing the costume gig?โ you asked, gesturing to the bulletproof armor he was wearing. You were wearing a vest of your own, but something about Jasonโs eyes told you he wasnโt planning on killing you.ย
โSince I was thirteen. Died for a bit and came back though,โ he said carefully.
โShame.โย
Jason laughed at your reply, inching closer to you.ย
โI donโt want to hurt you, doll, and I donโt think you want to hurt me either.โ He was so close you could touch him now, and per your training, your eyes flicked around for anything within arms reach to smack him with. It was more a reflex than genuine want at this point, but you had a mission to complete.
โWho says I donโt want to hurt you?โ You backed up, now leaning against a table and inching your fingers towards a flower pot.ย
โFive years of marriage, hopefully.โ Jasonโs eyes flickered towards your hand.ย
โSix.โ
โWhat?โ His face contorted in confusion.
โWeโve been married six years.โ You said casually.
โAre you sure?โ
You rolled your eyes, now really wanting to hit him. โYes, Iโm sure.โ
โOkay fine, six years of marriage,โ Jason said sarcastically before adding โDonโt hit me with that flower pot, angel.โ
You grinned. โYou always were great at reading my mind.โย
Raising your arm to smash the vase on his head, he knocked it away and grabbed you in a headlock, a few ceramic shards piercing your skin. Jason took the gun from your hip and threw it across the floor.ย
โCanโt hurt me anymore, can you sweetheart?โ
Jason instantly regretted his choice of wording when you stabbed him with a knife you had hidden in your boot. It didnโt seem to do much damage though, even though you caught a gap in his armor, and Jason was still able to throw you against a wall and reach for his own gun.
โDonโt make me do this, baby.โ Jason looked genuinely sorry and something in your heart wavered for a moment.ย
โIโm sorry,โ you said quietly.ย
Jason stared at you for a moment before swearing and putting his gun down. Blood was slowly seeping from his wound and as much as he had tried not to maim you, there were a few cuts and bruises present on your own body.ย
โWho do you work for?โ He asked after a moment, walking up to your body crumpled on the floor.ย
โIf I tell you, Iโll have to kill you,โ you attempted a joke but the ringing in your head made it sound weak.
โYeah, you made that much clear,โ Jason said while looking at you fondly. You were silent until he repeated the question again, this time with more urgency.ย
โAn underground spy organization focused on the collection and redistribution of government intel. Iโm sort of the cleanup department.โ
Jason nodded at you to continue.
โThat drug op the other night, Fray had gotten involved with a rival agency and I was called in to take her out. That was until you and your freakish friends showed upโ I guess I should say freakish family. Anyways, you fucked up my mission and I was redirected to kill you. And now that my boss knows Iโm married to Red Hood, either you die or I do.โ
โYour boss knows my identity?โย
โMhm,โ you glanced at the red helmet a few feet away. He hadnโt ever bothered to put it on, you two were way past disguises. โSo if I donโt kill you, she will and then sheโll kill me.โ
โBaby, we can handle her, but you gotta work with me,โ Jason pleaded.
โWhat do you meanโฆ?โ you asked apprehensively.
โMy wifeโs in danger, Iโm not just going to let her die.โ He rolled his eyes teasingly.
You stared at him in disbelief. โJason, just a day ago you were trying to kill me yourself.โ
โWell, things change,โ he laughed nervously. โI still love you, that never stopped, it was justโฆself defense?โ
โOh, bullshit,โ you smiled.
โOkay, maybe it was a bit intentional but I was never going to really kill you!โย
Looking at Jason, you realized that he was telling the truth. Red Hood was an expert marksman, youโd seen enough clips of him online to know he never missed. Yet conveniently, every shot your spouse had fired at you had missed you by inches. And in truth, some subconscious part of you wasnโt going for the kill either. You and Jason may not have had the most passionate of relationships, especially in recent years, but you did love him.ย
You looked up at Jason through clouded eyes. He had always been painstakingly beautiful, with gorgeous, soft, curly hair and eyes that seemed to change between blue and green in the sun. Jason knelt down and pulled you slightly to the left, just out of range of the security cameras that littered the mansion halls. You didnโt think much of the gesture and neither did his family watching from the cave below, but Jason was a private man. He cradled your face gently in his calloused hands, stroking your cheek softly with his thumb before leaning in and kissing you. It was gentle before passionate, all that fire you had lost over the years being reignited in an instant.ย
When he pulled away, Jason stared into your eyes for several moments. Kissing you cheek, he whispered into your ear, โWeโre going to get you out of this, I promise.โย
You knew from the look in his eye that he meant it, wholeheartedly. He kissed you again once more before the two of you made the descent to the Batcave where you would (very awkwardly) begin to devise a plan to escape your agency. You and Jason had made some sort of silent agreement that youโd most likely have to kill your boss, but you couldnโt really mention that around Batman of all people. You knew your boss wouldnโt have revealed Jasonโs identity yet, not without the right price, but it wouldnโt be long before she did. Once your final mission was over, you and Jason would have to flee Gotham now that you were both on the radar of nearly every intel agency in the state. Even though the family was still slightly upset about you trying to kill their brother, they all understood how difficult it is to live a double life. Bruce had arranged for you to have your dream house in a well protected area and Dick made you both promise to visit regularly. Damian looked almost proud of you for how close you got to murdering Jason.
Five or six months laterโฆ
You were sitting in your new living room, wrapped up in Jasonโs arms as you watched the snow fall outside your window. You had asked Jason if he was going to miss Gotham and being a vigilante, and to your surprise he had said he wouldnโt. Jason had been fighting all his life, hopping from one kill to the next with so much blood on his hands he swore they stained his life red. But he was tired, and so were you.ย
Every now and then, youโd see him flinch at the sound of knocking or stare too intently at a knife while chopping vegetables. And heโd notice how you constantly surveyed your surroundings in public and the way youโd look for an underlying motive in every compliment told to you. But Jason loved you through all of it, as you did him. He loved the way youโd rant about the inaccuracies of spy movies the same way heโd criticize action blockbusters. He loved how you were as tough as you were gentle, able to adapt to whatever he needed. But most of all, he loved how you understood him without him needing to explain himself. You never pressed for him to speak because you already knew what he was thinking. When heโd wake up at night in a cold sweat, youโd already be there next to him with a glass of water and a soft look knowing that youโd awoken an hour before from your own ghosts.ย
Your new life wasnโt perfect, you were two tormented souls who had found refuge in each other. Jason had left Gotham behind and even though you were used to relocation, you had grown fond of the city. You had ditched your last names as well, renewing your vows and settling in under a new name.ย

Bruce Wayne x reader
summary: you are always teasing Batman, and this time he's getting you back for it.
The medbay on the Watchtower was quiet except for the hum of machinery and the steady drip of someone elseโs IV two rooms down.
You should not have been here. More specifically, you should not have been sitting on one of the examination counters in Bruce Wayneโs shirt while Batman stalked around the room looking like he was two seconds away from developing a new psychological disorder.
โThis,โ he said flatly, โis exactly why I said not to improvise.โ
You hopped off the counter carefully, shoulder stinging. โIn my defense, your plan sucked.โ
โMy plan accounted for the sniper.โ
โIt did not account for the second sniper.โ
โIt would have if someone had stayed in position.โ
โOh my god,โ you snapped, throwing your hands up. โYou are literally impossible after missions.โ
Bruce stopped moving.
That was the thing about him, most people got louder when they were angry, but Bruce always went still.
The room suddenly felt much smaller.
โYou disobeyed orders,โ he said quietly.
โAnd everyone lived.โ
โThat isnโt the point.โ
โIt kind of is, actually.โ
Your voice bounced off sterile metal walls. Tension still burned hot under your skin from the mission since the adrenaline had not fully gone yet. Gotham docks. Smuggling shit. Meta-tech trafficking. A near miss that had ended with you tackling Bruce behind cover half a second before a round shattered the concrete where his head had been.
You were still bleeding through the bandage on your shoulder for it. And somehow he was angry.
Behind the glass doors, you caught sight of Superman walking by. He took one look inside the medbay, immediately pivoted around, and left. Coward.
Bruce tossed disinfectant onto the counter beside you. โSit.โ
โI can patch myself.โ
โYou stitched your own arm last month and nearly passed out.โ
โThat happened one time.โ
โYou passed out onto the Batmobile.โ
You narrowed your eyes. โYou bring that up constantly.โ
โBecause it was memorable.โ
If that was Bruce Wayne's attempt at a joke, it was rather pathetic. But you supposed that a man couldn't have everything.
And annoyingly enough, it made your irritation crack for a second. Bruce noticed immediately. Of course he did, world's greatest detective and all that shit.
He stepped closer, hands moving to unwrap the ruined bandage from your shoulder with clinical precision. It all honestly wouldโve been easier to deal with if his hands werenโt so unfairly steady.
โYouโre glaring at me,โ you informed him.
โYouโre injured.โ
โThatโs not the same thing.โ
โNo,โ Bruce agreed calmly. โYouโre usually more annoying.โ
You let out a startled laugh despite yourself. Big mistake. Because Bruce looked up at the sound. And for one stupid second, the entire atmosphere shifted.
There was always something slightly dangerous about his attention. People thought Gotham feared Batman because he was brutal, but that wasnโt really it. Gotham feared Batman because he noticed things. Everything. Every little weakness. Every lie. Every bit of hesitation mustered up and right now all of that focus was aimed directly at you.
Your smile faded a little.
Bruceโs thumb brushed briefly against the inside of your wrist while adjusting your arm. It was probably an accident. Still, heat climbed your neck instantly.
โYou keep doing that,โ you muttered.
โDoing what?โ
โLooking at me like that.โ
His gaze didnโt move. โLike what?โ
Like he was thinking something he absolutely should not be thinking, and he knew damn well what he did to people! He enjoyed watching you lose your composure.
You looked away first. โForget it.โ
Bruce stepped closer instead. The movement backed you against the counter again before you fully realized it. You weren't exactly trapped but you wouldn't say you were free either. There was still space to move if you wanted.
โYouโve been reckless all week,โ he said quietly.
โYouโve been unbearable all week.โ
โYouโre deflecting.โ
โYouโre hovering.โ
โIโm assessing damage.โ
โOn my shoulder, or psychologically?โ
His mouth almost twitched.
Almost.
โYou think youโre funny.โ
โNo,โ you said. โI think youโre funny, actually. Secretly.โ
โThatโs unlikely.โ
โYou growl at people all silly.โ
โI do not growl.โ
โYou literally communicate in disappointed silence.โ
โItโs efficient.โ
โItโs dramatic.โ
Bruce tied off the clean bandage with a sharp pull. โAnd yet you keep provoking me.โ
The room felt warmer suddenly. You crossed your arms carefully. โMaybe because you act like nothing affects you.โ
That got his attention, and a dangerous sort of quiet settled over him.
โNothing affects me?โ he repeated.
Your stomach dipped slightly. But you were committed now.
โYou know what I mean,โ you said. โEveryone walks around you like theyโre scared to breathe wrong, and you justโโ you gestured vaguely toward him, โโstand there acting emotionally invincible.โ
Bruce stared at you for a long moment.
Then he laughed completely humorless. It was somehow more intimate than if heโd touched you.
โYou think thatโs what this is?โ he asked.
Something in his tone made your heartbeat stutter.
โBruceโโ
โYou think I donโt react because I donโt show it.โ
Another step closer.
Close enough now that you could see exhaustion beneath his eyes. The faint white scar near his jaw. The controlled restraint holding every inch of him together.
โYou think,โ he continued quietly, โthat I havenโt noticed the way you look at me after missions.โ
Your breath caught. Oh, this was bad. This was very bad.
Because the problem with teasing Bruce Wayne was that eventually he stopped letting you control the game.
โAnd you,โ you said carefully, โthink way too highly of yourself.โ
โDo I?โ
โYouโre impossible to flirt with.โ
Bruceโs gaze dropped briefly to your mouth. Then back to your eyes.
โNo,โ he said softly. โYou just havenโt realized when youโve succeeded.โ
The silence afterward felt catastrophic.
Every nerve in your body suddenly became hyperaware of the fact that he was standing between your knees, one hand braced against the counter beside you. He still looked completely composed! You were losing it. You were losing it! Your brain had effectively dissolved into static.
From the hallway outside came Barry Allenโs voice:
โHey, Bats, have youโโ
The door slid open. Barry stopped dead. You and Bruce both looked over. There was a six-second silence.
Then Barry slowly backed out.
โNope,โ he said immediately. โNope. Whatever this is? Iโm deeply against it.โ
The door shut again.
Bruce exhaled through his nose.
You stared at each other for one long, unbearable second, and then bubbled into laughter. The breathless kind that escaped after too much stress and not enough sleep. Bruce looked at you like he was trying very hard not to smile.
Which somehow felt more dangerous than if he actually had.

Bruce Wayne, Father of Seven
If you had told Bruce Wayne five years ago that heโd officially be married to the woman of his dreams, he would say thereโs no way.
If you were to tell him that not only was he married but he also finally got to experience the baby stage of having children, heโd tell you to get out and stop trying to mess with him. Yet here he is, finally experiencing the stage of a childโs life he never got to with his other children.
Who knew that the best way for Bruce Wayne to settle down was to be nap trapped by a twelve pound three month old. It hasnโt been easy for anyone in the family, it was the biggest adjustment the both of you had to face. Having six children and bypassing the baby stage made it even harder. By the time each child came into your lives, they could already talk, walk, and basically survive without the both of you constantly hovering over them.
However the minute little Martha was conceived, the life you knew was over.
