The more I think about it the more petty and uninformed it becomes! Do you know how hard it is to get fruits and vegetables when you're homeless, let alone a cooked meal full of them? Next to impossible, if not completely, and that level of malnutrition is debilitating. You cant think clearly, and you dont have enough energy to keep moving all day. Most of the free food places give out food people dont want - cheap, artificial, full of carbs, expired and even rotten food (happened to us, multiple times, in one case so serious we were hospitalized with severe food poisoning thanks to a donated Christmas dinner of bad salmon).

I lived in a shelter for a bit. There were little to no veggie based meals, mostly meat, and cheese based dishes. A lot of the meat based dishes came in almost raw, you’d take apart a chicken finger, and the meat would be pink.

Same. What little produce we got was like the worst grade-school lunch you can imagine. People conveniently forget that most of the donations shelters get are given away for a reason, and the reason is often that it's old and/or just fucking sucks. Ramen cups, old meat, plastic cheese, rock hard bread. Few people are nice enough to give away fresh, wholesome food. I'll never forget when we were given a muffin so rotten it was green inside, and when I asked for a not moldy one they looked at me like I grew a second head.
