Put another way: This budget is annual (though they keep adding more money to it) so if we wanted to pay for universal college, we could cut this by 10% This would take 73 billion out of the defense budget to pay for school for everyone in the US who wanted to get higher education And our defense budget would be horribly slashed cut to a mere 665 billion, making us *only* outspend the next highest 8 nations combined instead of the next 10, all of whom are either allies or trading partners.This is still an increase from 2018′s military spending (the latest year my google search found figures for) of 649 billion. Oh also that “3.4 trillion” figure they keep quoting about Medicare for All? That’s a 10 year figure, which means the real annual budget figure is $340 billion. Which is a more substantial hit to take out of the military budget, but we’re still outspending China by about $50 billion even with the higher ed taken out. To reiterate: America could still have the largest and most technologically capable military in the world by miles, even if we only took from the military budget to pay for these programs

So what’s our excuse, America? That it’s too expensive?

The exceptionally silly thing is that a military isn't even remotely necessary when you're, you know, a nuclear-armed nation, unless you're looking to start offensive wars, and somehow nobody understands this.

Trotsky said that Socialism need democracy like the human body needs oxygen. It’s workers’ continual participation in the planning and running of the economy that keeps a corrupt layer of bureaucrats from taking hold. Measures like having all official posts be rotating, and the right to immediate recall, and no official getting paid more than the average workers’ wage, all help to prevent the growth of bureaucracy.

The most important factor, however, is ensuring that the material conditions exist for the working class to participate, that they have the time and ability. That means drastically shortening the working day, raising living conditions and providing free education.

I hate _% of people statistics being used like “oh it’s such a small number” cause 1% is a small number but 1% of 7 billion is 70 million. That’s more than the population of the UK, France or Italy.

6% of the US is 19 million, as stated above. There are only 3 states that have over 19 million people in them. 19 million is the population of the entire state of New York. That’s more than half the population of California.

Taking populations and turning them into percentages is okay until you try to say “oh that’s not a lot of people” but the reality is… That’s millions. That’s enough to be its own country. That’s fucking scary.

We’re getting pretty close to having adults who weren’t alive during 9/11, and we really need to admit at this point that the overemphasis on 9/11 in the US is just a propaganda machine to indoctrinate the younger generations into nationalism and to justify all the horrible war crimes the US committed in the Middle East, and the continued mistreatment and distrust towards refugees.

“Venezuela’s government-in-waiting will allow foreign private oil companies a greater stake in joint ventures with its state-owned oil giant, Juan Guaido’s envoy to the US has said. Currently, Venezuela’s socialist government has requirements that Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) keep a controlling stake in any joint ventures with other energy companies.

But Carlos Vecchio, a representative for National Assembly leader Mr Guaido, who has been recognised by the US as the interim leader of Venezuela, told Bloomberg Mr Guaido’s government would look to open up the economy to increase oil production.

“The majority of the oil production that we want to increase will be with the private sector,” he said on Monday.

Venezuela under Mr Guaido would honour all “legal” and “financial” debt, Mr Vecchio said, but suggested it may not honour debt agreements signed by the current regime under Nicolas Maduro in which the country pays creditors with oil”.
