Be like the bird, the elf told himself as he perched almost too precariously on the massive toradil tree, staring keenly down below. A hundred feet separated him from the leaf-strewn ground and the other Kaldorei whom he watched. The bird’s eye is always focused, his aim unerring. He sees all… he observes with unmatched prowess. Then, when the moment is right…

It… pains me to write this letter, instead of speaking with you in person, but I could not wait for your business to conclude, and… I think this has been building within me for some months.
It is time for me to move on. I am very appreciative of everything you’ve done for me- I feel very strongly that we needed each other, and [There is a lot of blotted ink, as if she was having difficulty choosing what to say.]
I have many fond feelings for you, and I have no doubt that you will be able to build a lovely life with Kandri. It is time for me to find my own family… and find my own place within the world. I do not think there is room for me in Kaldorei society- and trying to make it work would, in the end, make all of us miserable.
I am currently in Stormwind, although I have no way of anticipating where my quest may take me. There is a priestess in Darnassus- Saenah Goldenbough- that has been assisting me; she will be kept abreast of my whereabouts, should you need to reach me.
We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word has been spoken
How can you say you love one person when there are ten thousand people in the world that you would love more if you ever met them? But you’ll never meet them. All right, so we do the best we can. Granted. But we must still realize that love is just the result of a chance encounter.
It’s easy to take off all your clothes and have sex. People do it all the time. But opening up your soul to someone, letting them into your spirit, thoughts, fears, future, hopes, dreams.. Now that’s being naked.

The incident in Utgarde lingered in her mind. She knew the man they had killed wasn’t really Keleseth; just a construct that happened to resemble him. She could feel again the fire of hatred running through her veins, the shuddering impact of her hammers connecting with bone and flesh, and the overwhelming joy of watching the creature die.
It nauseated her. She was offered vengeance, and it made her feel sick- and at the same time she craved it. Was this what drug addiction was like? Hating oneself for needing the poison, and unable to deny the desire for it?
“Another, please.” The Lazy Turnip was bustling, both with the residents of the valley and adventurers passing through. Anisai found it a soothing balm to his troubled mind. He knew no one there, so he was not forced to endure small talk, but there were so many people that he did not feel alone.
He knew he wasn’t the first to seek solace in a bottle, and he knew he wouldn’t be the last. But that knowledge did not ease the heaviness in his chest, nor the guilt he felt for avoiding the issue of Rachanel’s return from the dead.
“We are online, sir.” The voice was rough, like iron scraping over stone.
She lay inert, trapped in a body that no longer responded to her command, her emotions as distant as the face of the moon. Already her memories faded, the dull impact of the lance splintering into her spine, the hot splash of blood in her mouth. There was no fear- why should clay fear the sculptor? She was a pile of meat, a broken bit of refuse to either be discarded or transformed to something useful.
Three days later, she stood in the bow of the Mistrunner, safely out of the way of the crew, the wind whipping her hair back in a long stream behind her. The salty spray on her face and the heave of the deck beneath her feet felt good. She had not noticed on her previous ocean crossing how her feet moved naturally on the deck, placed to allow her weight to sway with the rise and fall of the waves. Her mouth curled in a tight smile at the realization. How many more clues would there be, that Swiftwater was her true name?
That night, as she lay in a swaying hammock, she dreamt. She saw herself cradling a newborn to her breast, the veil of her hair swirling around them as she laughed and crooned to the infant, tucking a soft, violet blanket around the warm little body.
“She’s so beautiful,” She heard herself say; awe and love in her voice.
“She takes after her mother,” A deeply masculine voice murmured. A face was associated with that voice; golden eyes, a sharp nose, a wide, generous mouth- hair as long and silvery as her own. Someone she loved deeply. “Her name is Kianyis.”
When she woke, she expected to feel the same pang of sadness that usually plagued her when memories surfaced. Instead she felt… calm. Peaceful, as if she had come through on the other side of a great storm, and the world was washed clean. She thought of the sweet weight of the child in her arms and took a deep breath. She was not the woman that held that baby anymore. But she no longer hated the woman that she had become.
The rest of the journey to Stormwind was spent gently prodding at her feelings and patchwork memories. She felt as if there were still large gaps where parts were missing; family, of course- and her place in Kaldorei society… but they were slowly filling in.

Two hours later, Sihai was poring over the registers for outbound ships to Stormwind, praying he had not left via hippogriff. Saenah had given her money- she had left Winterspring with nothing but the clothing on her back, and most of it was spent on the sizable bribe for the harbormaster. But all of that was secondary to the thrill she felt when her finger touched the line of ink that read Anisai Swiftwater w/ M. Honeypaw, Stormwind.
The next sailing for Stormwind was in two days. No time to return home to Ashenvale for her things, but Saenah had planned for that contingency. As she left the docks, the sea winds teasing at her hair, Sihai shook her head. It was not seemly that a Priestess of Elune possessed such a devious mind.
She took a deep breath and pushed her paperwork across the smooth wooden counter, resisting the urge to bite her lip. The woman working the counter looked over her documents, then up at her face.
“It will take a few moments to bring up your account ledger, please wait.” The young woman turned to a massive bookshelf, her fingertips tracing the spines of the leather-bound volumes within. It felt like an eternity before she found what she was seeking, slender fingers pulling out a large volume, the name ‘Swiftwater’ embossed in faded gold ink on the dark leather.
“Here you are.” Deft fingers flipped through the pages, stopping mid-way through the thick volume. The ledger was turned around and slid across the counter for Sihai’s inspection; a list of deposits and withdrawals penned in neat, crisp purple ink on the parchment’s page. There had been no transactions for the last four years. Unsurprising, as she had been in Northrend.
Sihai’s fingers trembled slightly as she touched the book, her fingertips tracing over the remaining balance in the account. Her voice was steady, though. “There is a vault as well, I believe?”
The banker’s smile didn’t reach her eyes. “Of course. Would you like to access that today?”
Sihai shook her head. “No, I do not think so, not today. I would like to make a withdrawal.” She named a sum that made her stomach clench, but the woman treated it as if it were a matter of course that clients show up after four years of inactivity to withdraw large sums of gold. Of course, Kaldorei being who and what they were… perhaps it was.
Nightfall found her once again on Rutheran’s docks, staring out over the churning ocean. Tomorrow would be spent procuring provisions for the journey. She had not thought to return to the human city; she had very much intended to put it behind her. But the need to know herself, to find her family and kin… was enough to send her down to hell itself, much less a close, stinking city full of humans.
“Sihai?” She didn’t recognize the speaker at first, out of her natural element. The priestess had her hair pulled back and wore a plain linen tunic and trousers; quite the difference from her usual immaculate robes.
“Saenah?” She felt immediate relief. Other than Caelithil, Saenah Goldenbough had been the only Kaldorei she had met that treated her like a person, rather than a thing to be feared and treated with suspicion. She fell upon her friend, wrapping the smaller night elf in an embrace. “I… couldn’t wait any longer, is there any news?”
Bright eyes looked up into her face with sympathy. “Yes, but let’s go somewhere quiet to talk about it.” The young priestess shifted a basket on her arm and turned to her companion, a strapping young man Sihai had not noticed at first. “I am going to go have tea with Mistress Shadowclaw. Will you please let Sister Rhianka know that I will not be joining her this afternoon?” The young man gave Sihai a long look, but nodded to Saenah’s request and turned away, making his way toward the temple.
“Now then.” Saenah took Sihai’s arm and began leading her through the crowds. “Let’s go have a seat and I’ll tell you what I know.”
Sihai’s stomach lurched as she followed obediently. Had something changed? Saenah had been very good about sending letters- she supposed one had arrived after they had left for Winterspring. So the news must be fairly recent. Had Anisai denied her? Had something happened to him? Scenarios of all types floated through her mind as Saenah led her to a small café. They took seats fashioned to look like stumps at a tiny table, their tea served in delicate porcelain.
She wrapped her hands around the cup while Saenah organized her thoughts, her emotional turmoil disrupting her usual control of her body temperature and sending tendrils of ice floating across the surface of her tea.
“He did not write back.” Saenah’s voice was quiet and sympathetic. “He came to the Temple.”
“He… he came?” Emotions warred within her. Hope, anxiety, anger--! Why had they not sent for her immediately?
“He did not stay long,” Saenah continued, as if reading her mind. “Long enough to deny that you were his sister and to tell us there would be hell to pay if we did not stop sending him letters.” Her mouth curled in a small smile, her hands reaching out to envelope Sihai’s with quiet warmth. “Sometimes they need time to… to reconcile themselves, my dear.”
She felt cold; ice throughout her body. He denied her. She had hoped… the memories… so much pinned on this. She had known better than to hope, and had done so anyway. She didn’t recognize her voice, soft and wooden, laden with grief. “Thank you for trying, Saenah. Perhaps it is for the best.”
The young priestess blinked. “Surely you are not giving up?” She squeezed Sihai’s hands lightly. “Elune’s Grace, Sihai, he could have been your twin! There is no doubt in my mind that you are Rachanel Swiftwater.” The priestess smiled. “Once he meets you, there will be no doubt in his mind either.”
“Ah, but he will not meet me, will he?” She did not mean to sound so bitter. She held up a hand when Saenah would have spoken. “I know. Families need time; they have done their grieving already. I should be patient.” Her lips pressed together, frustration oozing through her body. “I’ve waited long enough! I can’t be patient anymore. I can’t!”
Saenah sat back on her stool, lifting her teacup to her lips. “I was going to suggest that you go after him. He cannot refuse to see you if you’re there.” The priestess smiled serenely. “This is what we shall do…”
Nothing helped. The restlessness pricked and poked at her, making it impossible to relax or sleep. She could not settle down to read, to work on any of the small projects she had brought with her. In desperation, she took one of the sabers out for a run, hoping the exercise would help drain some of the pent up energy.
The cold crisp air of Winterspring streamed in her face, the saber’s breath pluming white as they loped through the heavy snow. She bent down over the animal’s shoulders, burying her hands into the thick warmth of its ruff, even though the cold did not bother her in a physical sense.
Thoughts and emotions long buried blew through her mind like snowflakes, eddying and whirling like the early stages of a blizzard; whisked away before she could recognize or acknowledge them. Before she was aware of having chosen a direction, the frozen walls of Everlook loomed in the distance, and she crouched low in the saddle, urging the cat to greater speed.
She didn’t stop to think. If she stopped, the enormity of what she was doing would sink in and she’d be paralyzed by doubts. Thoughts of Caelithil and what he might think finding her gone oozed across her conscious mind only to be ruthlessly frozen and shoved aside. She had delayed long enough. Now she craved… no! Needed action.
A storm had begun by the time she rode through the great gates of Everlook. She took shelter in the small, cramped inn. By this point, her decision was made. She would go to Darnassus. It was a long flight, but she could go and be back within a couple of days, and it would be at least that long before Caelithil’s business in Moonglade was concluded. He’d never know she had left.
The moment the weather lifted, she was airborne, leaning low over the feathery neck of one of Everlook’s hippogriffs, her eyes squinted shut against the piercing wind. The growling restlessness in the back of her head had abated once she took action, but it prowled like a great saber, ready to begin clawing and biting at her should she fall complacent again.
She was stiff when she dismounted in Rutheran, passing the reins to the waiting handler without a word. She waved off the nearby vendors offering hot chava, cocoa and teas, moving slowly toward the glowing portal that would take her to the top of Teldrassil’s great height. Now that she was here, she felt an icy knot forming in her stomach. What would she say, at the Temple? Her feet slowed, some of the impetus that drove her rushing to the Temple of the Moon draining away.
It had been a long, exhausting week. Anisai let the door to his room fall closed behind him, and gave the narrow cot against the wall a longing look. At this moment, he’d happily curl up on the wool rug on the floor and call it good, but… there were things to tend to.
He crossed to the ewer stand and poured water into the basin, quickly stripping out of his travel-soiled clothing and kicking it into the corner. He smelled of yak and saber cats and hadn’t had a bath in Elune knew how lon- No. He knew how long. He closed his eyes and leaned on the table, seeing again the devastation of the homestead in his mind.
Ah, Maozhai. I am so sorry. She had been just as nervous as he, he thought. To bring an outlander home to meet the family, even if he was just a friend – his mouth twisted at that thought- was an event of note. And he wasn’t just a friend. Not anymore, at least in his own mind. He bent down and scooped water over his face, scrubbing fiercely.
He was proud of her. She had held up well during the burial, her driving need for vengeance sustaining her at first, then the need to find her surviving brothers. Now the Honeypaw family, what was left of them, were reunited, and now that the driving need was passed… she no longer had something to keep her occupied.
As he pulled on clean clothing, he sighed. He remembered the early days after Lanissa and Kianyis had been lost. Everything had been a blur, and perhaps if someone had been there… He gave the bed one last, longing look before stepping out of his room and going to the one next door.
He tapped lightly, but there was no response. “Mao?” His voice was pitched softly. If she was sleeping, he didn’t want to disturb her. The knob turned easily under his hand, the door swinging open. She was asleep, curled on her side, exhaustion making her fur look grey and sickly. He let out a long breath and began to take a step back when he heard a low rumbling noise.
Five pairs of eyes looked up at him in a distinctly wary and unfriendly manner. Five throats began to vibrate with low-pitched growls. The quilen slowly rose to their feet, watching as Ani hastily beat a retreat, closing the door behind him. Well. Guess she won’t need me then.
He went back to his room and fell onto his cot fully dressed, his last thoughts not of Maozhai and her transformed brothers… but of a young woman he had once idolized, who might now need her brother to come after her. Sihai, she called herself now. Rachanel… Soon. Soon they would talk.
I think if a death knight finds a healthy outlet for those urges, be it fighting the forces of evil or just taking it out in the brawl pub, then they could easily go about the rest of their day as a happy…
I don’t think anybody understands how much it hurts me to be on the work floor right now and therefore unable to type up a lengthy and verbose response to this. Screeeeeech DK discussion.
IMO they’d have to be a sick person to be like “I just killed like 20 guys and really got a boner off of their suffering, time to go pick daisies”. It’s not just being a soldier because it’s your job or anything like that, these are people who physically need to cause suffering, and you’d either have to be a wack job to find that enjoyable otherwise, or you’d be strongly affected by it internally because it’s like, “wrong”.
So yes, a death knight could be happy, but they’d also have to be unhinged to genuinely find pleasure without remorse.
Well that’s kind of the interesting thing about it, isn’t it?
I mean— okay, play whatever you want, do what makes you happy, and as long as you’re not hurting someone else with it (which is entirely possible), I will not tell you that you’re wrong. BUT I find it a lot more interesting when someone plays a character who despite having all of this internal difficulty (because, let’s face it, even your broodiest DK is going to have some mental issues… you’ve been raised from the dead as an instrument of torture and pain for a war machine that turned HUGE parts of your world into diseased wastelands. At the very least, you’re going to be facing some MAJOR PTSD, and probably a whole host of other issues as well) tries to make the best of things.
Basically, I agree with you that DKs, because they only survive by causing pain and suffering, are excellent vehicles for angst and gloom, but I find it much more interesting to see the conflict played up between being really angsty and gloomy and trying to exist as a functioning member of the society they’ve been stuffed back into. That, to me, is where DKs who aren’t walking angstbuckets are the far more interesting characters, because they’re actually playing up a conflict rather than just saying, “this is who I am :(” It’s fascinating to play out and watch played out—every time they find themselves experiencing a positive emotion (and please, let’s not get into the “DKs don’t experience positive emotions” thing because I will throw lore at you so fast), there’s also that enormous guilt along with it, that sense of “I really genuinely do not deserve to feel happy/loved/relieved/thankful/etc.”
And that, to me, is far more interesting than having a DK who sits around all day with a perpetual B( on his face just waiting for someone to walk up and ask him what’s wrong so he can go on about how much it sucks to always have to kill &c. As always, though, YMMV.
In response to- IMO they’d have to be a sick person to be like “I just killed like 20 guys and really got a boner off of their suffering, time to go pick daisies”.
Have you been to a professional sports match? Football? Boxing? Hell, look at PPV Wrestling. I wouldn't assume that the spectators are getting erections from watching, but they are certainly deriving pleasure from watching- and from the quickness a bar brawl can devolve into a free for all, one can only presume that there's a great deal of pleasure in participating in physical violence as well.
I think many people assume that death knights only get their cravings satisfied from death, and I don't think that's necessarily the case. Pain and suffering can take many forms- hell, I imagine they could find a lucrative job as a butcher, if they drew out the act of slaughtering the animals (I do not think this is something I would want to RP, myself, but it's a legitimate options).
At any rate, I find discussions like this very interesting, and at the same time, they make me hesitant to RP my death knight- because she has found a creative way of channeling her need for pain, and I worry what other roleplayers will say about me.

Anisai gently closed the door to the cell, laying his head against the smooth, polished wood. The accommodations at the monastery were lacking in luxury, but for a copper-pinching traveler that didn’t want to sleep under a bush, they were damned near palatial.
He had a straw-stuffed mattress with clean, azalea-scented linens (bug free!), a small table with a ewer and bowl, a ceramic cup, and a couple of pegs on the wall to hang his belongings.
The room had a narrow window that didn’t offer much of a view, and the door had no locks, but there was a cool evening breeze, and the monks had assured him that incidents of theft were non-existent. Which was good, because he couldn’t really afford to lose more of his belongings.
It had been quite an eventful few days, and he was pleased to see the cell was exactly as he had left it- with two exceptions. There was a small pitcher of wildflowers in the window niche, and a small bowl with oranges on the table. He smiled to see it, wondering if it Maozhai had somehow arranged it.
He had spent the day wandering while she took care of some personal errands. The street vendors on Pandaria had a wealth of goods that were unfamiliar and fantastic to him, and he had purchased several yards of a rich crimson silk as a gift for Mao.
It took a few hours, but he had pieced together a pattern that he thought (from hastily stolen glances) would likely fit her, in a style that combined Pandaren fashion with elements of night elf designs. He’d have her try it on when he saw her next.
Pleased with himself, he flopped onto the bed, the ropes beneath the mattress creaking under his weight, envisioning Mao’s curves wrapped in the crimson cloth. Something crackled against his chest, poking his skin uncomfortably. With a quiet oath, he fished a crumpled scroll of parchment out of his shirt.
“Ah. Right. Forgot about you.” The monk that ran the hostelry had passed him the letter when he left that morning. With a quick flick of his thumb, he broke the seal and began reading, his eyebrows creeping up to his hairline.
Anisai Swiftwater
Druid of Darnassus
Sir,
As part of the Temple’s efforts to reunite families torn apart by the recent conflicts, information has come to light regarding one Sentinel Rachanel Swiftwater, presumed deceased in the Northrend conflict.
We have found a woman that matches Rachanel’s description living in Ashenvale under the name Sihai Shadowclaw. Unfortunately, Mistress Shadowclaw holds no memories before her death in the wastes of Icecrown; she states that her memory begins with the Scourge. So we cannot be one hundred percent certain of a match.
She is most insistent to be identified, as she has a great desire to reach out to what family she may possess. We ask that you return to Darnassus as soon as possible to…
He didn’t read the rest. The parchment crumpled in his hand, and he lay back on his pillow, his head reeling. Rach might be alive- no. Undead. His mouth twisted, as if he had bitten into something vile.
It was a restless night. He had struggled with his feelings all night. The past several years had taken much from him; his sister, Moikyla, Rachanel vanishing, his beloved Lanissa gone with their child, Kianyis. When the sun rose, he had made his decision; Rachanel was dead. If there was an abomination walking on Azeroth in her body, it was his familial duty to ensure she was laid to rest.
Shaurael never saw herself as the type to settle down and have a family. She envisioned her life as 'Adventure til I drop.' She met Abdestius on the road and traveled with him on a temporary basis- assuming they would part ways.
She resisted her feelings for a long time. He kissed her in Winterspring and she ran from him. After they got word of her parents' death, she realized she needed him.
No one's really sure where their relationship will go. But I personally hope they spend a long time together. <3
