You knew it! My new original song âI Knew It, I Knew Youâ for Disney and Pixarâs Toy Story 5 will be yours on June 5th. Iâve always dreamed of getting to write for these characters who Iâve adored since I was a 5 year old kid watching the first Toy Story movie. I fell instantly in love with Toy Story 5 when I was lucky enough to see it in its early stages, and I wrote this song as soon as I got home from the screening. Sometimes you just know, right?
You can pre-order now exclusively on my site and catch Toy Story 5 in theaters June 19th âïžâïžâïžâïžâïž

Taylor Swift once asked her lover to remember her as a wild dream. At seventeen, that sounded like a Shakespearean love dedication. Now, at twenty-five, I still see it that wayâjust with fewer romantic fantasies and a lot more cold, hard reality. Part of me still wants to be the girl they remember in their wildest dreams, even if our relationship was actually much softer, like the sea in Northeast Brazilâa sharp contrast to the waters that bathe our Caribbean...
Mora was twenty-one, and his name was already echoing through the underground. And then there was me, MarĂa Gabriela Cruz: seventeen years old with a song in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 5. A Spanish reggaeton ballad that blew up after being featured in a Marvel movie. Critics were already calling me the next Shakira, potentially the first non-white Latina to win Best New Artist at the Grammys.
None of that happened.
Like most Caribbean artists, I didn't stick at the top of the US charts. I didn't go nearly as far as they bet I would, though I kept a loyal fanbase across Latin America, Europe, and Oceania, with seasonal spikes in Africa and Asia. Abuelita used to say I was "big," bigger than anyone in my family, but that didn't change the fact that I had failed in the American market.
For a rich, frustrated teenager, thereâs no better cure than a summer love: intense, with that slight taste of the forbidden. My own version of Romeo and Juliet. "Romeo and Juanita," Carol used to joke...
Pero nosotros nunca nos vimos asĂ, because there was something so tangible and good about what we didâso pure in my eyes. The heartbreak of our ending was exactly what I needed to get over being discarded by the States. Tia Lupita was the one who warned me: "Un hombre mĂĄs viejo, niña, no te harĂĄ bien. AdemĂĄs, te dejarå⊠maculada, partida, rota⊠DeberĂas buscar el prĂncipe americanoâŠ" And it didn't take a month for a line of "American princes" to show up at my doorânot that my move to Miami didn't play a part in that.
Rick. Rick Pearsall. Closer to my age, a college football star, a "Great American Dream" in the making. I invested in him with the same energy he invested in me, but at a despacio paceâslow. No photos, no videos, no public persona. It was a secret. Our relationship was like a princess in a tower: only we knew, and for me, my image team, and his PR people, that protection meant stability and controlling the narrative. To keep it that way, a contract with a million-dollar penalty was signed. We were Americaâs secret.
Two tours later, I was burnt out. My body, my mind, my will, and my creativity all left me adrift. I was Ariel herself: no voice, no tail, but with a prince who, at that moment, was the anchor keeping me alive. It was intense, but realâas real as the depression that took hold of me between 2022 and 2023. Iâd be lying if I said Iâm cured; it still haunts me. But today Iâm better equipped against the monster, even if it cost me Rick and his "frozen stability" in Santa Clara. Because not even the best of men or the strongest of women can handle being alone in a relationship. Itâs like a rope holding a boat in the harbor during a summer storm: eventually, we snapped. No noise, no scandal, just with more maturity than I ever thought I had.
My inner poet loves an over-the-top metaphor. Look: if Rick was the harbor, I was the boat, and our relationship was the rope that broke, then it only makes sense for the waves and currents to drag me back to where I belong: the turquoise, blue, and turbulent waters of the Caribbean. After years of being an outsider in the land of dreams, my own emotional turbulence led me back to the tourist paradise: PR. Puerto Rico.
Benito was the first one to find me. Not because heâs known me since I was in diapers, but because thereâs a beat that binds us like soulmatesâor cousins, which is what we call each other. Too close to be siblings, too intimate to be just friends. He heard it when a remix of my first song popped up on SoundCloud with a beat change at 4:00 AM on some random Tuesday. By the next morning, he was there, with strong coffee and milk crackers that left crumbs everywhere and attracted ants. Thatâs when I stayed strong: I didn't shed a single tear. He decided for me that it was time to end the hiatus; the world needed to hear what Santa Clara had kept locked away for three years. That Saturday, I went to Mass with Tia Lupita, and she confessed she was relieved I was backâor at least, part of me was.
Years ago, Tia Lupita was the one who threw her hands up and cried first. PapĂĄ had to leave the room while MamĂĄ and Abuelita gave me advice... It was September; the tourists were leaving the beaches to go back to their routines. Moraâwho I only called Gabriel back thenâhad gone on tour. For the first time in months, I put a name to what we had been to my family, and it was a shock. Tia Lupita had "hopes that money wouldn't corrupt me..."
Mom took me to the doctor, I got exams, started birth control, made my poems more explicit... It was my little metamorphosis. With this new, authentic, independent version of myself, the US radio stations and studios decided I needed to be there to take over the world. Thereâs a scene in Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue that perfectly captures what happened to me: I was a new butterfly, different and flashy, about to be trapped in a glass jar for display and left to wither away or be replaced by something more interesting. If someone broke the glass, it would be luck... but if the shards cut her, what was meant to be her salvation would become her sentence.
I remembered everything Iâd tried just to be happy and not fall to the bottom of that pit. I martyred myself, searching for some divine explanation for why I was stuck there, but that only trapped me in a mental loop. I realized that stagnation scared me more than the monsters under the bed. That was my monster, and it was right on my heels.
After Benito made me finish all the coffee, he gave me that lookâthe one without any pityâwhich made me want to be small again. Maybe run to Abuelita and ask to braid her hair... She never let me; instead, sheâd sit me at the foot of her armchair and braid my hair until I forgot why I was upset.
"Are you back?" His deep voice hit me right in the chest. I needed to hear it, but getting it like that, without any filters, was strange to say the least.
"Coming back is hard..."
He nodded and kept going: "Doesn't mean it's impossible. And youâve always gone further than you were supposed to. What did they call you in the beginning? Hurricaneña."
I laughedâone of those choked laughs that starts in the chest and echoes in the soul. That old nickname, "Hurricane Girl"... I hadn't heard it in years. In Santa Clara, nobody ever called me that. They didn't know. How could they, when my true essence was locked away on this island? I got up from the rug where we were sitting on the studio floor.
I opened my arms, gesturing to everything around us. "This belongs here. Over there, I couldn't be the hurricane girl."
I stopped. The window looking outside seemed smaller after his words. I didn't have an exact answer yet; I had guesses, ideas, but nothing concrete. His songs, which I had ignored for years, finally hit me. I broke up with the American prince when I realized he wanted more than I could give. There was also the homesickness, the burnout with Rick, the realization that San Francisco would never be home.
Outside, someone set off fireworks and my heart jumped. Not out of fear; I knew what it was. Recognition. That sound didn't exist up north. That boom was part of my essence, my daily life, and my true home. If thereâs nothing like it around, the environment becomes, for me, uninhabitable.

Shakira did something early on that basically built and still carries her fanbase to this day: she actually invested in her Brazilian fans. Nowadays, hardly anyone does that. It used to be a thing like 15 years agoâTaylor Swiftâs "Long Live" feat. Paula Fernandes is a prime example. The thing is, coming to Brazil at the start of your career might feel like more of a loss than a gain financially, but in the long run, itâs the ultimate game-changerânot just for the numbers, but for the energy at the shows.
So, to all the artists dodging us: bringing your tours here (big or small) and showing up on Brazilian TV is exactly what makes you a legend (just look at Michael Jackson). Itâs how you stay relevant forever in the global industry.

Deixei-me guiar pela rotina e me afastei de vez daquele quarteto que me fazia sentir bem.
