they are inspiring and teaching the younger writers how it’s done. respect ❤️
And…
when we are shattered,
not by war, but by love left unfinished,
when the soul spills over
like wine from lips that trembled
but never kissed,
what flows out of us?
Salt.
And water.
As if grief, too,
is a kind of living,
a slow, sensual dying
wrapped in memory’s breath.
As if sorrow
isn’t a fracture,
but a function of having loved
someone who never fully left.
As He knew,
we’d walk deserts of absence,
licking the taste of your name
from the corners of our mouths,
cracking beneath the heat
of all the confessions we held back
while your lips were still near.
So He placed oceans inside us,
not on our tongues,
but behind our eyes.
Salty, silent,
and desperate to be kissed away
Tears…
those fragile rivers
that begin at the edge of longing
and end
where your fingerprints used to rest.
Salt—like the memory of your skin.
Water—like the way you looked at me,
without needing to speak.
Do you see?
Tears are more than sadness.
They are design,
blueprints of desire and devotion,
each drop a gospel of what was felt
but never said.
God,
the first lover,
the first ache,
the first poet…
He wrote healing into anatomy,
but He wrote yearning into the mouth.
He made lips soft not just to speak,
but to break,
to whisper your name
even when you're not here.
He knew you'd be gone one day.
That I’d sit in the dark,
my hands aching for your hair,
my chest flooded
with the soft violence
of things left unsaid.
So He made a door
behind the eyes,
and He made lips
that remember the shape of your name
like prayer.
And still we say,
"I am broken."
No…
you are overflowing.
You are weeping devotion
through the eyes of a body
that once trembled under someone’s breath
and called it love.
Salt…
the sting of your absence,
the ghost of kisses
never returned.
Water…
the rhythm of longing,
the river that moves
when the mouth stays still.
In joy,
in aching silence,
in dreams where your lips nearly touched mine,
we leak life.
We weep in a language
older than touch,
more honest than words,
a language of need,
of ache,
of surrender without shame.
What mercy,
what mystery…
that the very things which sustain us
are the very things
we spill
when someone we love
doesn’t stay.
So cry,
child of the stars.
Let the salt taste like memory.
Let the water carry her name.
even your sorrow…
is sacred.

Starting fresh is the only way Phoebe can escape a life of crime, but her best friend's older brother complicates honest dreams in this gripping new series from the authors of the Addicted series.
Phoebe Graves grew up in a family where deception and seduction are as commonplace as breathing. The Graves and her best friend Hailey’s family have been on the run their whole lives, but after a high-stakes con job goes south, Phoebe and Hailey decide to run away and start over. The small Connecticut town they settle in seems too good to be true.
The biggest flaw in their plan is Hailey’s frustratingly handsome brother, Rocky, who insists on coming with them. Living honestly isn’t in his DNA, and his past with Phoebe is downright messy. He’s everything she wants, but nothing she can have.
Phoebe worries that Rocky will tempt them back into their old ways, where lying is second nature. She doesn’t want Rocky to mess up the new life she’s begun for herself. The longer she stays in town, the more she realizes what it means to have a reputation—and what a normal life with the man she loves could look like.
this is a multifandom mess with a particular weakness for the marauders, UKYT, dnp, 5sos, and heated rivalry, plus whatever else has decided to rot my brain this week.

ੈ✩‧₊˚ The Boys: It's Not What It Looks Like - Mature - Chapter 15
A meeting in a bar lands Emily in a strange place with Soldier Boy. Butcher is going to make the most of it.
☾. Main Characters: Soldier Boy/Original Female Character
➴ Read on AO3 or Tumblr
“Happy birthday sis!” Will exclaimed, picking her up and swinging her around. He grinned at Ben before teasing his sister. “I was hoping that you would postpone growing up a little bit. But since you’re dating a hundred-year-old man, though, I guess you had to mature faster to be able to talk to him.”
Emily rolled her eyes and laughed, nudging Will affectionately. “Will, remember you can’t tease me anymore. He’ll beat you up if you do.” She turned to Ben and introduced them, “Ben, this is Will, my brother and one of the family clowns. Honestly, they’re all ridiculous, except maybe one. I’ll let you guess which.” She shot Will a fond, exasperated smile. “But I love them all insanely.”
Suddenly, Emily’s face lit up as she spotted a group of women across the room. With a quick squeal, she dashed away from the men, her excitement clear as she joined her friends. Will watched her go, an amused glint in his eyes, then leaned toward Ben and said quietly, “You won’t see her for a bit. She tends to forget everything when she’s with her best friends.”
Five animated women around Emily’s age surrounded her. “How many best friends does she have?” Ben watched with curiosity.
Will shrugged, “I don’t know. Two? Five? It depends on who's arguing with who or who stole whose boyfriend this week, I suppose.” He laughed and glanced back at Emily. “Female best friends aren’t like male best friends. They actually talk about feelings.”
“No, Will, you’re not paying attention. There’s never any stealing of boyfriends or ex-boyfriends among that group. That’s the reason I can’t date any of them, since I dated Annabelle,” Zach explained, extending a fist for Ben to bump, leaving Ben confused by the gesture.
“Everyone knows you two still love each other, even if you won’t admit it. Naturally, the others won’t date you. Stop crying about it and go back to Annabelle,” muttered Will under his breath.
“Hey. I know you.” The words came from a tall woman with bright purple hair as she strolled over to the group. Walking beside her was an even taller guy, who was rail thin and had a friendly smile. Also with them was a brunette woman.
Ben at once recognized them as Emily’s friends from the Equalizer bar, and he greeted them with a genuine smile. “Yes, you do. You’re the ones that dared Emily to approach me and the reason I’m even here.”
The guy let out a deep chuckle, responding, “I can tell you have no complaints. Understandable, honestly.” Ben remembered him as the one saying he had wet dreams about him.
The brunette laughed loudly. Ben noticed her clothing choices had improved for tonight. “My mouth dropped open seeing you and Emily on TMZ the next day! That was unexpected. I bet she hated that attention.”
Ben glanced at Emily, catching her eye and sharing a tender smile that lingered between them. Will noticed it right away and glanced over a Zack, who gave him a knowing look. “No. Definitely not disappointed. I’m grateful. And yes, Emily isn’t really thrilled about the press, but that was her least favorite time since she wasn’t aware of it until the next day. Do you know Emily’s brothers?”
The purple-haired woman’s gaze drifted toward Will, Zack, and a newcomer Ben hadn’t met. She introduced herself with a playful smile, “Only by reputation. I'm Charity, this is Beth, and that’s Cody.” The three exchanged friendly nods with the brothers.
Zack, who never missed an opportunity to flirt with a beautiful girl, said, “You should be charitable and give me your number.” Then he gave her a wink.
“You should be ashamed of that pickup line,” Hughie came up with A-Train, Annie and Ryan. His comment resulted in everyone having a good laugh at Zack’s expense. Ryan walked over beside Ben, who glanced at him to check and see if he was having fun.
Annie smiled at Zack, accepting his kiss on the cheek. “I am learning quickly that Zack has no shame,” she said, her tone teasing.
After the introductions between the two sets of friend groups and Emily’s brothers, she came over with her childhood friends by her side and introduced everyone, including the dark-haired guy that Ben didn’t know, who happened to be her last brother, Jordan. He grabbed Emily and squeezed her tightly before giving her a kiss on the head.
The three youngest siblings were close. Jordan was her third brother and lived with Zack. He stood out from all his siblings, not only because of his shyness but also because of his striking appearance. He took after their dad in his coloring, with long, thick, dark hair with dyed blonde tips, and deep green eyes, compared to his mother and other siblings with their various shades of blonde hair and blue eyes. He was exceedingly kind, much like Emily. Combined with his exotic good looks had made him the object of half their high school's affections, including Emily’s best friend Dylan, whose crush persisted since childhood. Yet, Jordan’s focus remained on his music, the band he played in keeping him on the road often. Like Will, he lacked supe abilities, but his presence was magnetic in its own way.
Soon, the waiter brought a round of drink orders. “Emily, Mama Johns said that your brothers are paying for the open bar,” A-Train announced before telling the waiter to keep them coming, causing everyone to laugh.
Emily asked Ben and Ryan to come with her to find her parents. She greeted her brother David and his girlfriend Kara along the way. Ben noticed Kara’s cold, almost clinical stare as she sized up both him and Ryan, her attitude bordering on arrogance. He felt unsure how to respond to Kara's icy demeanor. Normally, he’d put her in her place, but he liked David and didn’t want to treat him badly, by association. It wasn’t just a supe thing with Kara, since she was a supe, according to Emily. Kara seemed standoffish even with Emily. Ben could be more arrogant than her any time if she wanted to be judgmental. David went in the other direction. He’s always friendly. Ben hoped she was different in a more intimate setting, but he didn’t like her and ignored her.
When Emily found her parents, she introduced Ryan. Naturally, her mother embraced him right away, then showed Ben equal affection. But she quickly returned to Ryan, making him feel at home. Emily sensed a wave of sadness and mourning from him, missing his mother, and it tugged on her heart. Meanwhile, Emily hugged and kissed her dad, tearing up a bit. “You guys did too much, as usual.”
Her dad smiled warmly. “You’re our last kid to fly the coop and our only daughter. Naturally, we’re going to go all out. We’re so proud of how you turned out, sweetheart.”
“I had great role models. I love you so much, Daddy.” Emily hugged him again.
While Ben spoke to her dad, Emily let her mom fuss over her a bit more than normal. Honestly, she had no complaints about her mother, ever. She put her hands on both of her daughter’s cheeks. “Emily, you’re glowing. Is it something or someone making you so happy?” Her mom cut her eyes toward Ben with a knowing smile. “Let me see this bracelet Annie raved about.”
After showing her mom both pieces, she leaned over and whispered, “It’s beautiful and special jewelry, but it’s not the gift that meant so much. It’s the giver who is someone precious making me happy.”
Her mother gave her a mischievous smile. “Your father and I will put your gifts in Ben’s car when we leave. Don’t open mine until you’re home alone, completely alone.” Emily’s eyes narrowed in confusion.
“Hey Emily!” Turning, she found her three younger cousins weaving through the crowd, rushing over to her. The girls, twelve-year-old twins, Marie and Gina, and their thirteen-year-old cousin, Daisy. Everyone said the twins looked like her, with their blonde hair and blue eyes. The older cousin had dark hair and dark eyes like her mother.
Emily stood in shock at the amount they had grown up. “Holy shit. When did you grow up so much? And where was I?” she asked with a laugh as they gathered around her.
“Aunt Susan said you were bringing a boy for us,” Marie said quietly.
Before Emily could respond, Gina piped in with a mischievous grin. “He’s cute! I call dibs!” Emily didn’t have the heart to tell them that he was a supe and could probably hear their whispered praise. Although with the twins, they might not even care.
Her mom leaned over. “I didn’t exactly say it like that. I just said he might have more fun with them since they’re closer to his age. Girls, you made it sound like I was fixing you up on a date and that would get me in big trouble with your parents.”
Across from them, Ben did his best to suppress a laugh, while poor Ryan’s face turned bright red, his discomfort obvious. As expected, they heard the whole thing. Emily decided that she had better introduce them before Ryan burst into flames.
“Ryan, these are my cousins. The twins are Marie on the left and Gina’s the one in the glasses. Daisy is the one who looks nothing like the other two.”
“Or else they’d be triplets. Hello ladies, I’m Ben, Ryan’s grandfather.” He held out his hand and Gina and Marie shook it before he turned to Daisy.
Daisy tilted her head, studying him. “You’re not really his grandfather, are you? You don’t look like an old man. At least not like our grandfather.” Her bluntness drew a surprised snort from Susan, who muttered under her breath, “I’m totally telling my brother she said that.”
To Emily, her mom said, “Ben said Ryan is going to the Supe Ball, and I know the people there will be adults. Maybe he can take one of the girls as his date.”
Emily chuckled at her mother, raising her eyebrows. “So, you were trying to set them up on a date after all,” she pointed out then expressed concerns about his choice. “Mom, what if he likes one of the twins? Won’t they argue about one of them being left out?”
“That’s up to them but I doubt it. The odds of the two of them agreeing on anything like a boy are almost impossible. Or he can take both since his dad and his grandfather are both honored; he can get an extra ticket I bet. Let it work itself out. Just have fun.”
Emily glanced across the room, taking in the large tables and the colorful decorations around the space. The line for food wound around both sides of the buffet, and a photo booth and cotton candy machine stood ready for guests. The lively scene made her smile. Her parents had managed to blend an adult party with plenty of kid-like fun, a tradition her brothers and their friends always appreciated.
Her mom added, “After cake, we’ll stick around to sing and watch a few songs of karaoke, then we’ll leave so you can live it up without us cramping your style. Your brothers made sure the music was only the seventies through the nineties for the Karaoke competition.”
Wrapping her arms around her mom, Emily said, “You know I love my ABBA and power ballads. And Mom, please. You’re cooler than most of my friends. You’re a lot cooler than me! They’d welcome you to party down at any time. Thank you so much for this.”
Promising to check back in with them in a little while, Emily knew she had to go back to greet people and go with Ben to the buffet. His Supe-traits and metabolism made him burn through food like crazy. After her mom promised that she’d make sure Ryan went to the buffet at some point, they left him with Emily’s cousins.
Ben, ever mindful, pulled Ryan aside for a moment and said with mock seriousness, “You four better not sneak drinks.”
The warning drew a laugh from Emily, who nudged Ben playfully. “You know he probably wasn’t thinking about drinking before you said it,” she teased. “Just because you were a naughty kid, doesn’t mean Ryan will be.”
He intertwined his fingers with hers, “I realized that after I said it.”
Ben stopped in surprise when he saw Butcher, who had just arrived with Frenchie. Apparently, Frenchie had assumed Butcher was already invited and took the initiative.
“Happy birthday, Emily!” Butcher called out, his gruff manner softened by a smile and probably lots of alcohol. Kimiko showed her how to sign Happy Birthday and Frenchie teased her about getting older.
As Ben watched, Emily gracefully welcomed guests, even those she didn’t especially like. He realized she handled these social situations and gatherings with an elegance he didn’t have. Everyone seemed like they were having fun.
Emily was proud that all her friends were gushing over Ben’s charm and attractiveness, but surprised that she of all people would date a famous supe, especially a notorious bad boy. They told her that he was even better looking in person. She didn’t argue, it was true. Will and Jordan seemed to like him at once mostly because the rest of their family did. Zack vouched for him not being a douchebag.
Every time Ben wandered off from her, it was always with Hughie or one of her brothers. It amused her that her best friend, Kim, was flirting and dancing with A-Train. She hoped he would ask her out because she had been attracted to him since he joined the Seven. She was thrilled that everyone she saw seemed to be having fun. She danced with her friends and with Ben, even her dad insisted on a dance too.
After they finally ate, her mother dragged Emily up on the stage, so she could embarrass her with a speech, then teased her about her desire to have a cupcake tree every birthday and now they had finally enough people she could have one.
Eventually Zack got up and joined them. “I just thought I better get to the rules before mom decides to sing her one of her standard tunes.” He smirked at his mom. “First, until mom and dad leave, we have just couples and mixed groups, with no scores. One person sings alone or they can choose a partner, then challenge the next person. We’re not judging your singing, but we will mock anyone who chickens out or bombs a performance. After my parents leave, we will have a friendly competition. Since I love to torture my sister, it’s men against women. Ben is on our team, sis. It’s like a Rapture, Be pure.” The room erupted in laughter.
Emily shot Zack a playful glare. “That’s fine. Hughie’s on your team too and we remember what happened last time, I’m sure.” Hughie stood up and bowed with flourish to loud applause. “We’ll have Annie with her famous voice like an angel. We’ll take this one, won’t we ladies?” Emily boasted and there was a bunch of feminine cat calls and cheers.
Zack raised an eyebrow, undeterred. “We’ll see. Each round gets harder. First, you sing whatever you want, with whomever you want. Next, the competition picks the song, partner, or the band. By the final round, opponents choose everything—even the dance and props. It’ll be a riot. Kimiko’s keeping score, and Frenchie, David, Kara, and Lizzie are our judges. Refuse a song or partner, and you lose ten points. And we never let you live it down!” He glanced at their mother, grinning. “Are you ready to kick things off, mom?”
“Yes, I think I am. Now I know I always sing with your father, but I’m going to switch it up this year. He can sing with a new partner too. I’m not going to pass up on singing with someone famous. Ben? Do you mind joining me?” Mama Johns said with a big smile amidst a lot of cheering and whistles.
Emily chuckled at her mother. “I’m beginning to feel like the whole family is dating him,” she told her dad when she moved off stage. She really didn’t mind sharing Ben for a song or ten, she was just thrilled her parents liked him so much and so quickly.
While people began chanting ‘Soldier Boy’ and ‘Mama Johns,’ Emily watched her mom and Ben share a quick, conspiratorial conversation. When she heard the opening chords, laughter burst out of her quicker than she could hide it. Her mom had Ben singing ‘You’re the One That I Want’ from Grease. At least her mom kept everything PG, doing her trademark swaying, and letting Ben take the lead. Still, Emily couldn’t help but admire how good Ben looked on stage. More than a few women in the room were eyeing him appreciatively. She reminded herself that she got to go home with him and sleep with him later. The alcohol wasn’t helping her stop thinking impure thoughts about her man.
After they finished singing, her dad performed Don’t Go Breaking My Heart with Annie. Ben stood with Emily, watching the others sing as he held her in front of him, looping his arm around her waist.
“You weren’t jealous about my other girlfriend, were you?” he teased.
Emily laughed, nudging him gently. “Not if you keep it in the family, I guess. Are you having fun?” she asked, glancing around at the smiling faces across the room.
“Absolutely. I’m surprised that this is just a birthday party. It’s a big deal. And we were even provided top-notch entertainment.” Her father and Annie were finishing up. “By the way, we’re up next.”
Before she could react, Ben strode confidently to the stage and took the microphone. “I’m going to need the Birthday Girl to join me,” he called out, his voice carrying over laughter and applause. “I hope you can sing Emily.”
She got on the stage and took the second microphone. “You waited to find out if I could sing until I’m up here in front of everyone I know. Thanks babe!”
They turned around with their backs to the crowd, and he asked her with a mischievous smile, “Do you know Meat Loaf’s Paradise by the Dashboard Light?”
“Damn Ben if I couldn’t sing, this song would be the worst song ever!” She laughed, quickly kissing him. “Yes, I love the song. Let’s go, you get the lion’s share in the beginning. I hope they cut out the baseball part or the song is too long.”
“Let’s go,” he said with a wink. She could see he was really loving a chance to sing in front of people again. Maybe that is where his career lays. They sang the song to many cheers, ramping up the energy. Totally forgetting who was in the audience, including her parents, they got handsy with each other, acting out some of the song’s lyrics and kissed a few times during the song. But they could easily blame the song. The end of the song where they turn on each other and get bitter ended up being funny.
After they finished, a few more people sang, including Dylan and Jordan then A-Train and Kim. Charity, Annie and Emily got Ryan on stage to sing ‘I Love Rock-n-Roll.’ When Emily’s parents left and the Karaoke contest began, it got a bit wild and pretty vicious with people making other people sing nearly impossible songs. But no one got mean about the competition. Almost everyone sang, even those who sang badly, except the judges. Emily ended up having to do ‘Hey Micky’ with her best friends like they had done in high school senior talent contest. The girls lost when Emily’s brothers, Ben, Butcher, and Ryan sang ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and it was amazing. She had to crown her brother the king since he was the men’s team leader.
The DJ came back when the contest finished. Emily was glad to spend some time slow dancing with her man instead of in the spotlight. She was definitely feeling the alcohol in the warm room.
Emily opened a few presents. After receiving a parade of Soldier Boy Funko Pops, t-shirts, and even a six-foot cardboard stand-in that Ben pointed out was too short, she grinned and called out, “Does anyone have a present for me that isn’t Soldier Boy-themed?” Her friends joined in the laughter, and she made sure to open a few more unique gifts before deciding to take the rest home.
Emily’s young cousin, Daisy, boldly made plans with Ryan to attend the Supe Ball together. Ben, ever the mentor, started giving Ryan advice about kissing girls, but Emily caught him and quickly stepped in. “No. No way. Ryan, you’re too young and if it happens, I want to be able to deny I know anything about it.”
Ben chuckled at her before shrugging at Ryan. “We’ll talk later. For now, just make sure you get her phone number. It's more grown-up than asking Emily for it. Plus, chicks dig it.” After Ryan went across the room where Daisy was waiting for him, Ben grabbed her around the waist, pulling her into his arms. “Can I get your number?”
“Why? You never know where your phone is,” she replied with a smirk. “Just roll over and tell me at night.”
“Are you ready to go home now? We can send Ryan to Hughie’s if you want to continue this party in private,” he suggested.
“It’s the first night he’s staying with us. Don’t you think it’s wrong to ditch him? Especially since he was barely with us at the party.” She ran her hands down his chest with a seductive voice. “We can continue the party quietly after he goes to bed. But only if you sing to me again.”
“I’ll sing whatever you want, especially if you’re naked when I’m doing it. Do we have to wait until everyone else leaves, or can we leave now? We need to make sure that someone takes Ryan home.”
After they arranged for Hughie and Annie to take Ryan home, Emily and Ben spent almost an hour saying goodbye to her friends and family while Zack and Jordan carried her gifts out to Ben’s car. Ben was invited by the brothers to a Rangers game with Hughie and Frenchie the next night, provided they could find an extra ticket for Ryan. Meanwhile, Annie made sure Emily promised to join her and Kimiko for a girls’ night out.
As they were walking out, Ben wrapped his arm around her shoulders. “Did you enjoy turning twenty-five?”
She wrapped her arm around his waist and said quietly, “I don’t remember a better night. So far. I’m leaving it in your capable hands to make sure I never forget it.”
