☆Normal People Scare Me☆

It was like something out of a storybook. Reality shifted in a matter of days and we were suddenly expected to accept this new normal. And to make matters worse, there was no news on how long this would last.

“Don’t forget bread, we haven’t had any bread this week” your mother called out from the living room as your father left to do the shopping. 

“Because they haven’t had any bread. Perhaps you should call your sister for the recipe? At least that will give you something to do during the day” He called back from the doorway

“Harold!” she shouted indignantly

“Oh now honey, you know I didn’t mean it like that” Your father took his hat off for a moment and stepped into the living room

“You know, if I’d have known I would had to spend this much time with you before we had gotten married, I would have married Scotty Baker!” your mother lashed out, not looking up from her knitting

“I know, honey.” He replied calmly

“He would have gotten me bread” she continued to grumble

“I know, honey.” He called out behind himself before closing the front door behind him.

Tension had increased significantly between the two of them over the last few weeks. They loved each other, truly they did, but spending this much time together had taken a toll.

“Never marry, y/n. All men are trouble” She turned to you now that your father had left

“Yes, mama.” You replied calmly, not bothering to argue.

Besides, she would not be pleased to hear about the handsome boy that you had been running around with before all of this had happened. She didn’t much like the freak-show on the outskirts of town to begin with, but to know that her daughter had been smitten with one of ‘those freaks’ would have just about killed the woman.

“May I go to my room, mama?” You asked, knowing it was best to simply leave her to her thoughts when she whipped herself up into a mood

“It is just about the only place you can go, y/n. What has the world come to! And in Jupiter of all places!” She exclaimed

Assuming that her response was intended as permission, you left the room and went upstairs to your bedroom. You were thankful to at least have this space to yourself...or at least you thought you did.

Splayed out casually on the bed was the very same boy that you hadn’t told your mother about. He held one of his mutated ‘lobster-claw’ fingers over his smirking lips, indicating for you to keep quiet. 

You didn’t make a sound as you closed the bedroom door behind you. Turning back to the trespasser, you could see the window was wide open.

“Jimmy! My room is on the second story!” You whisper-yelled, walking over to close the window and pull the curtains

“I just wanted to check up on you, doll.” He flashed a heart-stopping grin as he spoke, acting as if this was all within the realm of normal human behavior

“Jimmy...” You sighed, unable to even find the words. Instead you just stood in the middle of your room, staring at him. 

And then all at once you processed the scene in front of you. Jimmy Darling, the handsome rough-around-the-edges boy with a heart of gold that you had been sweet on all summer, despite knowing you would not have your parents blessing, was right there. In your bed. His shoes kicked off on the carpet and his shirt unbuttoned. Looking every bit like a fallen angel who had made his way onto your duvet. 

“I don’t bite” He practically purred, watching the way you had been looking at him

You felt a pulse below your stomach that made your knees weak and you looked away, biting your lip. This was the last thing you expected when you came upstairs. 

“Y/n?” He asked with a hint of concern, probably wondering if he had gone too far by sneaking into your room

He hadn’t though. You’d imagined this more than once. All these days alone, unable to even speak to him on the phone because your parents were always home. Thoughts of Jimmy appearing in your room had crossed your mind more and more often lately.

“Jimmy, this is ridiculous” you laughed, a smile stretching across your lips as you raced up to the bed and leapt onto the spot next to him.

“No, what’s ridiculous is two-story houses. What do you even need all this space for? This place has more square feet than all our caravans put together.” He exclaimed

“Well no one asked you to climb through my window, Jimmy” I pointed out

“I wasn’t going to come all the way here only to turn around, doll. I’ve missed that pretty face far too much” He smiled, brushing some stray hair behind your ear.
