MY MAD FAT DIARY 1.04 | Don’t Ever Tell Anyone Anything
I fucking love you, Rae.
“Okay, so we’re restoring houses now, right?” Tyler glanced around, realising how small the volunteer groups were. He felt a little better about participating now. “Guess I’m doing the heavy lifting, huh?”
One look at him, and Suze decided that watching him do some heavy lifting would be considerably appealing. But of course she wouldn't voice that, sticking her chin out in typical defiance instead. She was still fairly new in town, and wouldn’t let anybody step over her until she figured out where she fit in. “Why’s that? ‘Cause you’re a 'big, strong man'?”

The energies are normal. 9-1-1, S09E05
“I’m sure there is, there’s a lot that needs doing around here. But sorry, I wouldn’t be the best person to ask. You’d want Caroline, she’s pretty, blonde, very bossy — no doubt you’ll see her running around here soon enough. She's in charge of all the assignments.”
“We have a few parents helping out. Or… older siblings. I’m sure someone could use baby sitter. Even if they’re not here renovating, maybe they just need a break.” Elena smiled, knowing that caring for someone young in this world wasn’t easy. If they could offload that responsibility for a while, they should.
“Pretty, blonde, bossy — got it. I’ll keep an eye out.” Suze was sure she’d already seen her around. “Okay, sounds like a plan. Can you think of anyone who might want some time out, or should I go find Caroline?”
“That’s… totally fair. They kinda’ give me the creeps, too.” Not enough to deter her from volunteering, but Elena wasn’t going to judge. She had no idea what this girl had been through, or who she even was. It wouldn’t be right to force her into discomfort for the sake of help with a paint job. “Hopefully they won’t feel old for too long, with all the renovations.”
Suze nodded sympathetically, knowing she wouldn’t budge on the matter unless there was an emergency. Renovations or not, the houses still had old structures. She wasn’t a bitch or anything, despite what half the disgruntled dead population seemed to think, she just wouldn’t go in a place like that willingly. “Fingers crossed! Any chance I could be of help in another way?”
Regardless of the house’s age, Suze wasn’t keen on renovating either as there was a high risk of damaging her new shoes. “I’ve been known to babysit a kid or two, drooling stepbrothers included. Maybe a parent wants to help you, and I can help them?”
“I actually feel good today. Which is rare, but I’m gonna’ go with it.” Elena nodded, as if she were reassuring herself. “I’m gonna’ volunteer to clean up one of the old houses, do you wanna’ join me?” It looked like the renovation team needed all the help they could get.
Old house? Suze swallowed. There was no way in hell she was stepping foot in one of those if she could help it. “Um.. sorry, no. I’m gonna have to pass, actually.” She gave the woman an apologetic smile. “I just.. have a thing about old houses. They really give me the creeps.” Untrue, but Suze was hardly going to explain to a stranger that she could see the dead, clear as day, and that those dead usually clung to old houses. There were already enough ghosts hanging around, even one in her very bedroom — she didn’t need to track down any more.
Pansy winced when James wailed, wondering what'd caused the sudden outburst. Suze certainly seemed nice enough, so Pansy's eyes narrowed in contemplation, wondering if he'd sensed something off about her. The non-human remained polite in spite of it, dismissing the apology she was offered, but her guard still made it's way back up in defence of them both.
Pansy went to crouch over James again to begin soothing him, but his cries quietened more quickly than they'd come around, causing her to blink in surprise. What Suze said next only furthered that, a sense of uneasiness washing over Pansy, along with confusion. "What song?"
Lost in the emotion of the moment, following along with the words in her own head, Suze didn't realise she'd fucked up until the woman questioned her. Startled, she blinked, gaze returning to the caretaker. "Oh - nothing. Just something I had stuck in my head," she shook her head, dismissing the idea. It was a natural reflex after years of being called crazy. She hadn't been asked to meddle in this particular dynamic, either. Things obviously seemed cohesive enough.
It's okay. You can tell her. Having focused back on the child, it took Suze another moment to realise the person addressing her wasn't necessarily a person at all. She met the mother's eyes, the blonde giving her a reassuring nod, and Suze realised what she was wanting. Oh.
"— Which... I had in my head because she was singing it. Just now. To James." It was an awkward follow-up, considering the gap of time between her sentences, but hey, there was no guidebook to these things. Suze was making it up as she went. Clearing her throat, and following the mother's lead, Suze began to sing the tune herself, hoping Pansy would recognise it by-way of blunt explanation. "Lucky I'm in love with my best friend, lucky to have been where I have been..."

Lydia huffed in frustration as a response to the questions, but the emotion wasn't directed at Suze. She was annoyed with herself. She had no answers, and no immediate way of finding them, either. All she had was this terrible sinking feeling, which was utterly useless. "I don't know... I barely even remember. I was out of it." The grief had certainly stuck with her, though, along with the visual of Jackson's life passing through her. It still burned, and the wave of fear she felt this very second was only amplified by that prior experience. "I have no idea. I don't know what they mean, I don't know exactly what they're trying to tell me. They're just voices."
Lydia closed her eyes, trying to concentrate. But the less she focused on Suze, the louder the chaos in her mind became. "It's stronger than when I told you about it before. There's... a sense of urgency. Like a clock running down." Had she been in a better state of mind, Lydia would've been more appreciative of the unwavering support that Suze offered, the belief. She'd done nothing to prove herself, or earn that trust, but there it was. "It makes me to want to scream."
"Okay," Suze chewed on her lip in thought, sensing they didn't have a lot of time to work with. This was very new territory for her, considering she exclusively worked with those who'd already passed over. Saving someone from that fate was a whole different ball game. "Maybe try and focus on what you do remember? I know it'll suck, but maybe it can help us. So, you can't talk back to them, right? You can't ask questions? I guess it means.. you just have to listen."
Appreciating that Lydia was obviously trying her best, she could still sense her fear, her worry. Trying to reassure her, Suze reached out and squeezed her fingers. "It sounds like we don't have much time, which is still something we didn't know before. You're doing really well. I know you're afraid, Lyd, I know last time this was really horrible, but I think you're able to hear these voices for a reason." She sighed, looking down for a moment. "When I was really young and I saw my first ghost, I didn't want to believe it. I kept looking away, for years, I looked away. But it got easier the more I accepted it, when I accepted I wasn't crazy. I think you have to let it in. Whatever it says, you have to listen." The redhead's comment was unexpected, sensing her frustration, but Suze shrugged nonetheless, encouraging of whatever Lydia felt was right. "Okay. So then.. scream."
Simon had been attempting to find a book about his abilities, wondering if he'd be able to cloak more than just himself; or more simply, searching for reassurance that he wasn't alone. There were a multitude of rebels with gifts, he knew that, but none of them could turn invisible. His power was a reflection of his own isolation, but it only proved to worsen that fact. It had also become a habit, disguising himself in public to avoid interaction. He'd trapped himself in a cycle, but he didn't want to do it anymore. He wanted to be better at socialising, to have the confidence to speak with everyone the way he did with Emily and Pietro. He wanted the confidence to ask Isabelle out.
Noticing another woman in the library, Simon made himself present, knowing how invasive it was to invite himself into people's privacy without their consent. He'd already made those mistakes, and he'd seen enough nose picking and mirror kissing to last a lifetime. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to ---" he tried to interject, but she continued to talk, clearly confused by his sudden appearance. She must've thought it to be someone, or something else, and Simon cussed himself for causing her unrest. "Sorry. I... was invisible, a moment ago. I didn't think anyone else would be here this late. I thought they were going to lock the doors, but I'm in the middle of looking for... something." The choice of vocabulary wasn't great, but his tone was sincere, genuinely apologetic.
Suze blinked at him once, twice, then she moved to pinch her own arm, make sure she hadn't fallen asleep reading those aforementioned boring history books. She winced, the feeling confirming she was very much conscious. "Hold up. Did you say... invisible? You were invisible before? You don't mean just hiding around the corner or something, you mean literally invisible?" Even with her life, the people she'd met, it was one of the craziest things she'd ever heard. He seemed sincere, shy if anything, but ironically, his explanation wasn't something she could take at face value. Crossing her arms, she nodded once, eyeing him. "Okay, then. Show me."
