Princess Zaria is Victorian Goth
If you have seen any of my Sofia the First Royal Magic related posts with Zaria on here, you may have noticed the word "๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐".
I'm not a goth myself, but I watch MonsterHighLuvMe on YouTube and TikTok, and watching them definitely made me learn about different types of goth style. And I classify Princess Zaria from STFRM as ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐.
I've seen many people especially on TikTok saying she's Emo, but I disagree because emo is too modern for a Disney Princess timeline.
Emo fashion is known for: Side-swept bangs (fringe), skinny jeans, band t-shirts, studded belts and converse sneakers. Zaria is wearing NONE OF THAT. I mean look at every versions of Wednesday Addams (the girl everybody compares this character to), do any of the versions of her look emo to you? I don't think so.
Victorian Goth is based off the 19th century, and that definitely describes Zaria and the Disney Princess timeline so much better than emo.
From the aesthetics wiki/fandom:
Victorian Goth is a substyle of the Goth subculture that draws its aesthetic inspiration directly from the fashion, art, and mourning ritual
Key motifs:
Mourning attire, corsets, bustles, lace, velvet, top hats, cameos, veils, Gothic literature
Primarily black, with accents of deep jewel tones like burgundy, purple, and dark green.
Melancholy, elegance, romanticism, history, mourning, decadence
Popular items in this style include:
I consider her tiara an Elegant Headwear, because she's a princess. I know Victorian Goth girls are known for ruffle hats but, I would consider her as ๐ฝ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ฒ๐๐๐.
Sure her outfit is more bright than dark with the blue and purple parts of her gown, but that doesn't she's not goth. I mean look at some of the Monster High characters like Draculaura or Elizabat, they wear colors like pink, blue or purple, but are still goth with the blacks, the darkness, the aesthetic, and the style. Zaria's dress and even her hairstyle is giving Draculaura and Elizabat.
Also is a Disney Junior, so of course is no surprise that the colors would be bright.
It's a little hard to see the pattern because it's so far away and there's no scene during the song where you can see the pattern of her umbrella very well. But looking at some victorian gothic patterns on Pinterest, this is the closest thing I could find that's similar to her umbrella's pattern.
I would like to see Zaria and other characters like Zane, Devin and more in different outfits, to see their style. Disney Junior clearly seems to love Zaria the most, because I've seen them post her a lot more than, let's say; Layla, Zane and Devin, recently on TikTok and Instagram.
Overall, I just think Zaria is her own rather unique kind of Goth. She's a Princess from the Disney Franchise, but she's not your typical Disney Princess. Plus she stands out the most amongst NOT ONLY the Sofia the First old and new characters, but also the official Disney Princesses and Non-official Disney Princesses.
Which is why even though she's completely different from me and I hate spiders, she's still one of my favorite characters at Charmswell School.
