Sometimes, the hospital got to be rather stifling. Well, actually, more often than not it felt that way to Tessa. There was that signature smell that came with hospitals. The disinfectant, the sterility. It still clung on, even though it hadn't been properly sterilized in what had to be going on two months. A whiff could be caught when turning a corner, or hinted at in the blankets they'd scavenged from the laundry. But it wasn't only that that made the hospital less than ideal. Death also seemed to cling to every ceiling tile and open hallway. Before and after the world went to shit.
So Tessa found herself outside, toe of her boot kicking at rocks on the abandoned parking lot asphalt, eyes searching in every direction. This place was more like a prison cell than a home, what with the concrete barriers and junked up cars blocking every plausible exit. Nothing said home like a barrier. What was it that was beyond those fences that everyone was so afraid of? She'd heard Nathan speak of going on scavenging runs, gathering supplies. Like this was going to be their future, forever. She didn't much thinking like that.
Tessa walked up close, noticing the 'guard' that stood watch but not thinking much of them, at least until they spoke up. Her nose scrunched. Traveling? Tessa had only ever dreamed of that to begin with - she'd never been anywhere else. And where she'd come from certainly wasn't anything to put on a postcard. Well...the coast had always been kind of nice. That was where she'd run to when she just had to get away for a while. "I don't know," she finally says. "Literally anywhere else? Sometimes I think it's probably better out there than in here." She gestures lamely beyond the barriers. "At least there isn't a bed time like we're five years old." As if she even really had that growing up. If it wasn't for her sister... "Where do you wish you could be? I've never even been anywhere else. Well like, much beyond Ventura County, anyway. Don't exactly come from a 'lets go on a family trip to Disney land' kind of family."
Nathan's expression warmed the moment he spotted Tessa lingering nearby. If the end of the world had given him anything, and the list wasn't very long, it was people he probably never would've known otherwise. Tessa was somewhere near the top of it. He hadn't known what to make of her when they'd first been assigned the same patient room. She was louder than him, bolder than him, and had an impressive ability to leave him wondering whether she was making fun of him or simply having fun. Somewhere along the way, though, she'd become his closest friend at Saint Marlowe, and Nathan had grown accustomed to ending his days with her nearby. Her presence made the hospital feel a little less suffocating. So when she launched into her plea for a romance novel, Nathan stared at her with increasing amusement until he couldn't suppress his smile. "Oh, absolutely. Big, buff cowboy?" He nodded seriously, already turning toward the shelves as though she'd given him a perfectly ordinary request. "Do you have any preferences? Shirtless? Mysteriously widowed? Emotionally unavailable but secretly very sensitive?" He glanced back at her, fighting his own laugh. "I take my job very seriously, Tessa. You're going to have to be more specific."
"Definitely big, buff cowboy," Tessa repeated with a firm nod, holding her arms out to flex the lean muscle she had as if it was anywhere near the big, buff guys she was describing. "Probably in a pose like this or something similar. Shirtless, obviously. Huge cowboy hat because he's such a big, strong man and it has to match." She considered for another moment. "You've got all the classic tropes down already, book man, not sure what you need me for. Definitely emotionally unavailable but secretly very sensitive, that's key. He needs to be an asshole on the outside and a warm, gooey cinnamon roll on the inside. You know what I mean?" She was struggling to keep the smile that kept growing off her face at the joke. Maybe he would have such a book. Who knew what was lying around this hospital. There might've been a horny old lady in one of the beds when it all went to shit, and this was her prime passing the time material.
She would never read that even if he did produce such a book. But she might have to take it if he offered it, just so he wouldn't feel as if he'd actually wasted time. Hopefully he knew her well enough by now that she was just kidding around. Granted...she would be impressed if he did know a book that fit exactly that description. "I saw some kids running away when I was on my way in here. Did you give 'em a good talking to or something?"

Bored. She was so fucking bored. There was nothing to do in this place and while she very well could just walk right on out of here despite the military probably getting on her ass about it...well, she didn't really have anywhere else to go. It wasn't as if this place was any better or worse than home - though at least home she could do whatever she wanted without the militant babysitters... Regardless. She heard the rumors. She knew there was something more going on beyond the barricaded walls of the hospital. She just didn't really know what and wasn't super keen on finding out.
But curiosity did kill the cat and in this case, Tessa was the cat. On the plus side, cats had nine lives, right? She had been wandering the halls of the hospital a bit aimlessly, peeking in on the other survivors here and there and what little life they'd built in these last couple months. It was only when she came across a restricted area, clearly marked but otherwise devoid of anyone else, that her eyes narrowed and her interest piqued.
A quiet corner of the place where the overhead lighting had fizzled out, one fluorescent bulb buzzing as it flickered in and out of life. Chairs and furniture were stacked up haphazardly against the doors, and... were those chains locked up around the handles? She studied it curiously, stepping closer as if she might get a peek of what was beyond those barricaded doors. Above them it was proclaimed to previously have been the ICU wing. Her eyes shifted left and right, then behind her, before she stepped closer. It wouldn't hurt anyone if she just managed to sneak a look through the sliver between the doors...right? What were they so desperate to keep out? Or in?

Learning the new strict rules of this so called 'community' was still on Tessa's ever growing list of 'to do's. Mess with the guards who flaunted their guns around like accessories was probably not the best use of her time, though she'd already managed to get on the bad side of one or two at this point. What could she say, she wasn't capable of just sitting still - especially not on one floor of a building for endless hours. She yearned to explore her surroundings, even if it was frowned upon by those who thought they knew best. But really, who knew best, here? Did these soldiers that were supposedly protecting them all know what they were up against? Or were they all just as clueless as the rest of them.
Sighing as she approached the edge of the second hightest level of the parking garage, Tessa settled herself onto the barrier that kept cars from careening off the edge. In the past, anyway. Now it would serve as a seat for her where she dangled her legs into the open air, the breeze lifting strands of her hair. She pushed a hand through the strands to try and tame them back behind her ears and over her shoulders, not that it would last. Then she produced a crumpled box of cigarettes that had seen better days - one she had looted off an unsuspecting guard earlier in the day. Too bad it only contained a couple that weren't smashed up to pieces already. The guy wasn't so great at keeping his own property in good condition, how was she expected to trust them to keep the community in good condition?
She slipped one between her lips before digging around for a lighter which, damn, she must have left behind in her room. Go figure. A groan escaped her, head tipping back and eyes closing. For a few minutes (maybe longer), she imagined what it might feel like to have the nicotine actually coursing through her veins.
Then there was a scuffle nearby and she spun in her seat, grabbing onto the nearest support beam to make sure she didn't send her self falling off the side. But it wasn't one of those...sick people, and it wasn't any soldiers, just another survivor probably looking for something to do with themselves. "Hey. Got a light?"

OPEN STARTER | LOCATION 02: Children's Wing/Library
The past two months had worn Nathan down in ways he hadn't expected. Days blurred together beneath the constant hum of generators and fluorescent lights, each one ending exactly where it began. Inside Saint Marlowe. He'd asked more than once to join the scavenging teams, always receiving the same answer. Not yet. He couldn't entirely blame the soldiers. He caught the hesitant glances they exchanged before politely turning him away. He understood some. Nathan looked like he'd snap in a strong breeze, and he knew his nervous habit of wringing his hands probably didn't inspire much confidence either. They weren't trying to be cruel. If anything, they were trying to keep him alive. Still, it was hard not to feel like another patient trapped inside the hospital.
Saint Marlowe had its own rhythm now, one Nathan couldn't seem to escape. Boots echoed down hallways at all hours. Radios crackled somewhere in the distance. Sometimes, when the building settled for the night, something else echoed through the sealed floors the military insisted everyone avoid. He'd gone looking more than once despite the warnings, curiosity always getting the better of him, though he'd never ventured far enough to satisfy it. Eventually, he'd accepted that the best thing he could do was what he'd always done best... make himself useful. The children's playroom had slowly transformed into a makeshift library. The shelves filled with every anything he could rescue from abandoned waiting rooms and offices. It wasn't much compared to the library he'd left behind, but people came anyway. Sometimes for a book. Sometimes just for a quiet place to sit and pretend the world still made sense.
He was shelving another stack of books abandoned by a group of children who had been far more interested in playing tag than reading when someone appeared in the doorway. Nathan glanced up, offering the same warm smile he always tried to wear, even when it felt a little borrowed. "H-Hi," he greeted. "Looking for something to read?" His eyes drifted toward the shelves before a sheepish smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. "My selection's... honestly limited. Turns out hospitals stock an alarming number of romance novels." A quiet laugh escaped him as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Not that I'm judging. Desperate times and all."
If anyone had asked Tessa a couple months ago where she might end up living one day, the fucking hospital would not have come to mind in a long list of options. Honestly, she would've figured the back of her car would be more likely than barricaded in this place. But then again, she wouldn't have thought people would suddenly start going crazy and attacking (or had some said even biting???) each other, either. Zero for two on the future predictions in that regard. And it wasn't as if she'd ever been dreaming big before, either. She didn't think she asked for all that much.
Days had turned to weeks and now...what had it been, a couple months? She had lost track of time long ago, not one to trace the sun in the sky as it rose and set. Maybe Nathan knew the exact day - maybe even the exact time (she wouldn't put it past him). He was the type to keep track of that, she figured, just like he lovingly collected books from all around the hospital and deposited them in the former tiny little daycare turned library. Tessa's fingers ran along the spines of the books, honestly impressed by the results of Nathan's efforts. She wouldn't have the patience.
Her eyes flicked up when someone entered the room, watching as Nathan greeted them as if he owned the place and showed them to whatever it was they'd expressed interest in. As soon as he was free again she sidled up beside him, arms folded and shoulder blade pressed against the nearest wall. "Oh please, oh please, oh please can you find me a romance novel to fill my long, lonely nights? Preferably one with one of those big, buff cowboys on the cover." She was teasing, of course. He could try and convince her to read all he wanted, she wasn't going to find comfort in any of the books he had on these shelves (probably). Instead, she had come to find comfort in his company ever since they'd been bunked up together in one of the patient rooms (best not to think about it that way). Like a warm blanket, he'd managed to wrap himself around her. He probably hated her guts, but she liked to think he felt comforted in her presence, too. Somehow. "Whatcha say, book man? You got what I need?" Then she snorted out a laugh, struggling to keep up the act.
