It’s no secret that many view the krogan as a barbaric race; their methods of testing adulthood, hunting and views on society are a mix of patriarchy and matriarchy. They were divided into Clans and they base their worth on battle prowess, strength and survival; they don’t appreciate the slow or the stupid, and one could only assume in the days when krogan children were plentiful they killed the ones unworthy. But like any society that have their own customs and beliefs, even methods of touch, attraction and speech, and though each Clan is different they do seem to have universal languages understood by all.
This gesture is more practice with positive emotions and romantic feelings; an excited krogan ( male or female ) will turn their throats red with intense excitement, or even when in the presence of someone who is sexually stimulated or aroused. Young krogan use this gesture to determine who is in the pecking order among them, as its also used as a submissive display. Exposing one’s throat ( whether or not to flash it red ) is considered a submissive gesture by most creatures, as it exposes a vital organ that can allow the other in party to rip it our and kill them.
In ME2 it’s shown quite often that krogan seem to constantly be testing one another, this practice is most likely performed a majority of the time by male clans in hopes of testing their strength and making a pecking order under the authority of the Warlord and Ambassador. The role of Warlord is always vied for by other male candidates, but it is not often challenged while the role of Ambassador is nearly ALWAYS challenged. Ambassador’s must be the strength of their Clan, a representation of their tribes power and ability to defend itself. While males are more competitive in keeping each other in check with headbutting and wrestling ( as young males start to display this behavior when they are around their fathers ), females are more social, less aggressive and their community is more in helping one another than ruling one another.
Touching / Expression of Friendship and Affection
Krogan don’t kiss and lick their partners, as some might assume because of their lack of lips. Though it is not UNCOMMON for them to try these things ( mostly with partners who are not krogan, like humans ), they have different methods of expressing themselves. Gently rubbing the skull of another krogan is a playful gesture among friends, and can be followed with a light tap of the skulls ( simulating a light headbutt ), while touching one’s scaled face to the others face is one of deep intimacy. Its showing the other krogan that you trust them, that you respect them, and it makes the bond a lot deeper between the two of them.
There is one thing krogan do not like, and it’s someone who doesn’t stand straight with their head held high. If you have a habit of being around them and you act submissive, they’ll be quick to abuse and bully you–krogan don’t express empathy in the traditional way. If anything, their form of empathy is trying to toughen you up, make you stronger or leave you to die ( and return to the Void where you belong ). Standing tall means you have respect, that you fear nothing while slouching or leaning against something is that of weakness, and will be exploited for amusement or by merely being offended at the sight. This behavior isn’t as strict on newborn krogan, as children are learning and have not completed their Rite of Passage.
