Everyone reporting on this story is high-fiving over the hacker who rooted a John Deere tractor then installed Doom on it, which yeah... Right To Repair and all that. Fuck John Deere and the oppressive pay-to-play business model he rode in on. Farmers are being systematically ruined by this exploitive shit.

But here’s the thing.

That team of ethical hackers uncovered how dangerously shitty John Deere’s information security is. How they were able to login as a Guest on the main website all the farmers & customers use and elevate their account privileges to see & do things that only John Deere employees should have access to.

And everything is connected. All those semi-automated farming vehicles are run via wireless connections, controlled by INCREDIBLY INSECURE networks run by John Deere. Which, because of their greed, paranoia, & obfuscation, nobody realized are so badly implemented.

These hackers got involved because they saw our food supply in jeopardy.

All it would take is a single bad actor to (say) poison a field with chemicals for 50 years. Or drive a few tractors onto a busy freeway. Or simply shut down all the harvesters during a critical window.

Here’s the Def Con 29 video presentation by Sick Codes, the guy from the article. It’s eye opening stuff and I hope it gets more mainstream attention.
