"They were a good person with good intentions and strong convictions and belief in doing the right thing. And because of that they deeply hurt people including people they were trying to protect" - is fantastic characterisation that too many people reduce to only one half of the equation

"They were a good person and people still died because they didn't put trust in anyone else" ← is so fucking good but people don't fucking appreciate it

"They were a good person and they failed. Over and over again. They failed." ← DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW DELICIOUS THAT IS!?!?

I am on my hands and knees begging people to allow characters to be complex and flawed and not reduced down to "The Good Guy" and "The Bad Guy"

Now this is gaining traction let me bring up the flip side that often gets disregarded as well

"They seemed like like a good person but were really just charming." - often reduced to either deliberately manipulative or just actually good

"They seemed like a good person, and think they are a good person, but they were just nice. Nice is different from good." - this is so good when it's the main character

"They think they are a good person who does fair and right moral choices but their decisions are selfish and cruel and they never see it that way" - DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH BETTER IT IS THAT THEY SINCERELY BELIEVE THEY ARE GOOD FOR EVERYONE!?! HOW MUCH MORE INTERESTING THAT IS?

"They were told that what they are doing is right. The leader who told them this is someone they trust and believe in. They never had reason to question whether or not the leader might be wrong, or worse, lying..." - Nice one, I like this.

"They believed they were doing the right thing, and proximally their actions had seemingly good results. But there were so many unintended consequences." - OOF. This is a good one. And has plenty of historical examples.

"They are doing what they feel is right. They think the protagonists are doing wrong. They may be convinced otherwise, but until then, they will be a powerful antagonist." - Also very fascinating.
