" sword swallowing... " edmund repeated, suddenly realizing that the baroness was the most interesting person in the room ! easily ! " ah but you're mistaken. that would be entertaining. who doesn't enjoy a bit of hostility ? parties need entertainment, yes, but the rarest kind is a scene of pure and uncontrolled loathing. "

"it was quite a fascinating thing . how they ever place those sharp swords down delicate throats - and yes - they are sharp ! i made sure of that ." she chuckled softly , eyes looking down at her glass of lemonade until a slight frown graced soft features. "as long as it is not directed towards me - it is entertaining to watch. and the aftermath of it." a dark chuckle left her , a hand coming to cover her mouth. "how many ladies look to the offended lord with such sadness as if she did not offend him in the first place and are upset about their person being ignored !"
Assad Zaman as Armand INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE | 2.01
she arched an eyebrow, her lips curving into a knowing smile as she listened to lord asif sarafโs lamentations. his situation was one she knew all too well, though the weight of it seemed to amuse her rather than evoke sympathy. "ah, the perils of being an eligible bachelor," she teased, her tone light but her words laced with a hint of irony. "you must be drowning in sympathy, lord saraf. to be the focus of every motherโs ambition and every daughterโs hopeโwhat a burden you bear." hazelโs eyes sparkled with amusement, her voice taking on a slightly more serious tone. "but i understand your predicament. the ton has a way of turning even the simplest tasks into herculean labors. securing a match for your sister will require a delicate balance of charm and cunning, iโm sure."
she tilted her head, her gaze sharp yet playful as she continued, "as for the dance floor, you underestimate your own allure. iโve seen you dance, lord saraf, and you are far too modest." she leaned in slightly, lowering her voice as if sharing a secret. "if youโre so worried about lady marinaโs mother, perhaps you should consider partnering with someone who will keep the other vultures at bay. someone with a bit of a reputation for beingโฆ shall we say, untouchable?" hazelโs smile widened, her words a clear invitation wrapped in a veil of casual conversation. she was enjoying this exchange far too much, finding a kindred spirit in asifโs reluctance to fully engage with the social demands of their world.
"their ambition and hope seem to be as suffocating as i could guess. i do not envy the lords of previous seasons." he chuckled lightly , resting his back against a pillar behind him. "well - i have a few ideas of a match for my sister. a few promising lords i have seen around this night. but do i say such things to her directly ? absolutely not. i will never hear the end of it for years to come - she can be quiet .... vengeful." an amusement left him as he spoke fondly of his sister - even if it was teasing in nature.
yet the amusement shifted at her words. "oh... you find me alluring , lady montgomery ? i am quite flattered - i do not think someone has called me such to my person before." well... only a certain person has many times but such a forbidden thing could never be muttered.... not now at least. an eyebrow raised at her words before a small grin graced tanned features. "are you requesting a dance , my lady ?" asif didn't hesitate to take her dance card and carefully mark his name down -- just for show at least. at least the ton couldn't say he didn't attempt to place his name down a few times.
a hand took hers gently and he lead her out onto the dance floor when the new song arose. he could already hear the whispers of the ladies of the ton behind their fans - it almost wanted him to roll his eyes but he kept his composure for the moment. he enjoyed hazel's company , he couldn't deny that. "i wouldn't say you are untouchable , my lady. your unapproachable demeanor is indeed a breath of fresh air compared to the other ladies of the ton. they seem to throw themselves at every eligible lords feet from either pressure of their dear mamas or the pressure of becoming a spinster..."

it was like a sudden pull - like the universe swayed and pulled a red string of fate between them. the sudden aura of the room shifted for him as soon as a certain family stepping inside the ballroom. asif tried to keep his composure... placing the feigned smile on his face as he fluttered across the dancefloor with an eager lady. dark hues pulled from her youthful face to look past her shoulder - staring at golden locks and a far from familiar face. the feigned smile turned into a real one - eyes shifting from boredom to longing. memories fluttering to the surface of heated passion and words of love. stay in the now , asif. he had to remind himself - pushing his attention back to the concerned lady in his arms.
once the dance was finished - he sauntered his way over to the frenchman. to the majority of the ton - they were childhood friends , families old friends... but to a very small circle - they were much much more. asif's heart belonged to him. "mmmm.... do not contort such fine features , old friend." a nickname spoken in public. "i'm sure lady anna will grace you an empty line on her dance card." a tease - a distraction from listening gossips. he took a long sip of his lemonade - fingers delicately wrapped around the glass... lips lingering far to long on the edge of the glass as eyes burrowed into blues. "i was afraid you would not show. that i would have to bare this evening alone without my partner in crime."

Something about the way his fingers wiggled in the air had delicate brown hues rolling. It had fingers twisting to pull the dance card from tied around her twist, holding it out to the other, held between two fingers. โTo be declared the Diamond is a most dreadful prospect. The incessant scrutiny, the obligation to satisfy Her Majesty, and the relentless anxiety of never quite meeting the expectations of both her and the Ton, I most certainly decline. Moreover, I am certain my beloved brother perceives me as the most exquisite gem โ or, he ought to.โ Her last words came with a quick striking tease to her tone. โI would prefer to avoid the throng of suitors at our doorstep. Most seek naught but a generous dowry and a vessel for progeny, rather than engaging in delightful conversation and hobbies.
"do not tell me you are hiding away from the eager prospects." he took the dance cared - seeing blank lines and it earned him quite the look of disapproval. "you a gem ? more like a scratched ruby." he teased before gently tying the dance card back around her wrist. "i am kidding... the queen would be out of her mind to not name you the diamond. you are the one that shines the most through." a hand came to fix a curl behind her ear before straightening back. "oh you have a most generous dowry ... trust me. i have seen father's estates. now to figure out which lord is just after such a generous thing - is the hard part." he won't left her marriage only become a thing of money and politics. "now please at least show some interest. a dance or two.." yeah ... asif was one to talk.
for alice it felt strange to interact with lord saraf outside of work. she had grown accustomed to ignoring him while cleaning his father's drawing room. but she assumed it would be appropriate to talk to him at the ball ; they were technically both guests of the queen that evening. it was the closest alice would get to being equal to any of her supposed betters. '"of course, my lord." alice answered with a curtsey. she preferred gatherings with less formalities but she wasn't going to tell asif that. "i don't know who the diamond is yet. i hope whoever it is sees being the diamond of the season as an exciting opportunity and don't feel like a horse at an auction."
"ah alice ! " he hummed softly. to say asif was cruel to his employees would be a lie. he was quiet fond of them - kind to them. why would he be mean ? "how are you enjoying your night off ? are you having a good time - if you say no than i am more than obligated to remedy that." a small laugh.
"Certainly not." But the Queen had seemingly limitless funds to spend on balls such as these and for the inaugural ball of the season, no expense could be spared. Priscilla wasn't entirely worried about the naming of the diamond, the longer it took, the more Lady Whistledown would have to work with. Why hadn't she chosen one? Had she lost her touch or were the ladies of the season simply that boring and not worth noting? Not that she wanted something like that to be printed especially with her sister among the debutants, but it would make for an interesting read and when she reported back to her employer, she would be sure to mention the wait. "I take it, you never had to experience being present for the calling hour or the promenades, then? You do get used to it."
"not really. my fault - i should have been present especially when it falls onto myself this year." his father wouldn't be able to , he had to pick up so many duties recently that he felt like his head was spinning just like the couples on the dance floor. "i dare say that i will be most -- diligent for those calling on my sister." they should be afraid. but he should have been more worried about calling on one of the eligible ladies of the ton himself. his father drove that into his mind non stop with the upcoming season. his first debut. and he had to make sure it was his last... according to his father.
Isabel herself was not much for idle gossip. When ladies would gather together over a Whistledown and whisper beneath their breaths as if their harmful words would not bring pain to strangers, the blonde herself pushed far from the actions. It did not keep her ears entirely clean of rumors, however, especially when you found yourself in such a large household as she did. Mei Honeyfield was a name she had heard before and it was rarely laced with kindness for a woman who had lost someone โ no matter how old he was. She had approached the other when it appeared she was standing off in a dark corner, no others attempting to approach. The response she received had the young Dowager Viscountess herself releasing the smallest of chuckles. โIs this the designated sanctuary for widows? I dare say they neglected to inform me of my rightful alcove.
the viscountess' face was familiar to her - she liked to keep the knowledge of the young widows in the circle of the ton. perhaps looking for a familiarity ? she did not know why she did it. "i suppose - or at least the cursed widow one." her words were bitter before a soft sigh left her. "they act like i have three heads on my shoulders ." she stared off into the circle of women that kept glancing her way hiding behind their lace fans. "they keep leading the men away from me.... do i not desire a dance ?" after all - she missed the seasons , her family never letting her debut. perhaps it was because they could not pay for a dowry.... or she was thought to be given away as soon as she was of age. the thought disgusted her. "i do not even know how to... proceed in these things... i have never been debuted..."
As much as Amytis had missed her father she was glad that he was absent from the ball. This was one of her mother's favorite past times and she was certain her eyes were on the people present looking for a match for Amytis' siblings. She herself no longer had to worry about that as a married woman. Her own eyes scanned the crowd for her husbands face but was unable to find him. Instead she walked towards another, a woman alone, "I would dare anyone to speak against me standing anywhere I want at my own mother's ball." The words did put a name to the face, "Your company is as good as any other's here, a woman in mourning should be comforted, not avoided."
a small curtsy was given to the princess as the widow came to know that she was one of the queen's children. "your highness." a small hum left her as fingers danced against the side of the glass in her hand. was she in mourning ? she pretended to be - she could care less if that old man was rotting in the ground or not. "i appreciate the kind words but i would hate to ' wash my bad luck on you '. " her tone gave a snide of sarcasm at her own words.

open starter ยป the queen's diamond ball
" these sorts of parties are always missing something... i cannot say what that something is but i just know it should have been taken into consideration during planning. " his index finger tapped the foot of his glass: it was an absent-minded movement of boredom. " a few months ago i attended a party with people who swallowed fire. have you ever seen someone do that ? it was rather marvellous. the sort of grand spectacle you'd expect her majesty to show us. " but the sea of white and silver gowns meant that nothing unbecoming or distasteful could be shown during the evening. this was an evening for the pretty little fragile birds to get a taste of the real world. a fire show, no matter how exciting, might have been too much โ or just too distracting !
"fire eating ? no." the widow spoke softly as the other spoke out. "sword swallowing - yes." a soft him came from her as she placed red colored lips against the rim of her lemonade glass. "these balls are much to -- simple for me. the only excitement they seem to bare is a fight or two. what lady has been offended by what lord. or what lords challenge each other for a duel out of honor." a small chuckle left her.
It was an apt analogy, and Priscilla couldn't help but see exactly that as she watched the debutantes and young lords circling the dancefloor, not yet confident enough to make a move to actually dance. "They are quite corky, aren't they?" She couldn't help it, had she really been among them all only last year? "Which one is Felix?" To be honest, it wasn't in good taste to make bets on the debutantes, or on anything really especially for Priscilla, but there was no harm in jesting. "You never know, young Felix might be the winner of the season...unless you plan on grease someone in the fist to make certain your prediction holds true."
"felix is that overly eager young lord hovering around the mayfairs. i hear he has been hoping to see the youngest mayfair - hoping to court her. let us see if he fumbles it. he's awkward - newly of age for the season. i give it -- ten minutes before she wanders away." he smirked , keeping a dark gaze on him before looking at her. "do you have any predictions of any newly weds this season ?"
"Splendid. I always look forward to the first ball of the season and for it to be hosted by Her Majesty? We are in for a treat." And, if Priscilla got her way, a lot of scandals she could squirrel away to her employer to keep things interesting. She didn't doubt that the event would lead to plenty that was fit to print. "Perhaps my younger sister, although do not mention it to her, at this point I fear her nerves will be frayed beyond repair at the mere thought of it."
"her majesty certainly spared no expense on this ball." he observed , glancing at the expensive trinkets perfectly placed about the ballroom. "as we all expected I'm sure. but for her not to name a diamond yet... it's beyond me..." asif shook his head slightly as he watched about the room - watching the fluttering of feet about the dance floor , the eager expressions of prospect in the younger ones of the ton. He wondered if he would have ever been one if not for the long term arrangement he was previously in. Now he was just tired. "any of us would be so lucky to have our sibling named... rishima would be the most striking and glowing diamond." he smiled slightly , looking off into the distant at her. "but to examine each and every caller... would be exhausting..."
Alexander Vlahos and Evan Williams as Philippe I, Duc D'Orlรฉans and Chevalier de Lorraine VERSAILLES 2.06: THE SANDS OF TIME.
hazelโs keen eyes found lord saraf tucked away in the shadows, his presence nearly swallowed by the dim light. his words, tinged with irony, drew a wry smile to her lips as she approached him with the effortless grace that had once made her the diamond of her season. โoh, a truly wonderful time,โ hazel responded, her tone dripping with the same sardonic humor. โnothing quite like the spectacle of eager mamas parading their innocent daughters before the wolves in hopes of a favorable match.โ she leaned slightly closer, her voice lowering to match the intimacy of the shadows. โas for this yearโs diamond, whoever she may be, i can only imagine the burden sheโll carry. to be the shining jewel of the season, scrutinized and envied, with every step watched and every word weighed... itโs a rather exhausting role, i must say.โ
hazelโs gaze, sharp and knowing, met his directly. โbut then, i speak from experience. being the diamond is a double-edged swordโcharming on the outside, but it requires a thick skin and a sharp mind to survive the expectations that come with it. iโm sure your sister, should she be chosen, will navigate it with grace. but letโs not pretend itโs an easy crown to wear.โ her lips curled into a small, conspiratorial smile. โand what of you, lord saraf? hiding in the shadows, far from the frayโdo you intend to watch the season unfold from a safe distance, or might we see you step into the light and join the dance?
"let us hope that my darling sister is not the diamond this year." he admitted with a shake of his head. "it would become rather tedious for me as i have acquired the duties of my father for the time being..." meaning he was to secure a match rather quickly for her and unfortunately -- for himself. "it would such a hassle to have all numbers of callers surrounding my drawing room." a soft sigh left him. "but i do wish this season will be her time.."
when the mention of him stepping out into the fold was spoken a simple groan came from him. "well... seeing as i was already surrounded so gracefully when i stepped inside - it seems some eyes are on me." he rose his glass to his lips , taking a small sip. "i'm not much of a dancer ..." that was a lie - he was an exquisite dancer. "i am afraid that if i so much step towards the dance floor - lady marina's mother is going to swoop in and drag me towards her daughter.

Open starter! -- The Queen's Diamond Ball | Noemie Talbot
Out of all the festivities, Noemie was looking forward to dancing the most. Seeing all the other Lords and Ladies take to the floor and twirl about in their oh-so-lovely dresses and practiced dance steps made this young lady's heart warm. So much so she was swaying to the music as she watched with joy. She couldn't believe she was finally here amongst society.
She fiddled with her dance card with such excitement and wonder and she watched the floor, she almost forgot that there were others off the floor probably watching her, in turn, being silly. Once the thought came to her head, so ceased her movements though not with embarrassment but simply due to the song ending. She gave a small clap as she peered around the room, wondering who'd go next.

the duke had been standing there for a moment - sipping on the lemonade. god... he hated lemonade but it was better than water. but it was a nice refreshment after dancing a dance or two with his own wife. he was here to chaperone his younger siblings - even if they were reluctant about him doing so. he had noticed the small sway in the corner of his eye and it couldn't help but leave a small chuckle from him. "i have never seen someone so eager for the season in quite some time , my lady." he spoke to her softly. "and yet - i have not seen you on the dance floor. the lads to shy to address you ?"

the baroness had been staring out into the crowd with a bitterness. fingers clutched to an unmarked dance card as she watched the youths dance and mingle. she stood next to the lemonade table but the area around her was bare - as if people didn't want to be associated with the honeyfield widow. she was still young - just barely into her marriage when her husband oh so -- peacefully passed in his sleep. he was rather old , wasn't he? and yet the women gossiped underneath their fans - the men circled around as they joined in their own idle gossip. she felt --- outcasted. "hmph." she finally resided to her fate and opened her fan -- aggressively. and when someone approached towards the table - she looked away.... then noticed they didn't reach for a lemonade. did they occupy the seemingly cursed bare space near her. "i would recommend you find somewhere else to stand. this spot is cursed by the dreadful widow ; supposedly."
