Han Deep Dive
Our Han Deep Dive Episode is now out, to complete season 2. @sunfin3k, @dongzhou3kingdoms, @zgongjin and @fuyonggu reunite to talk about the problems the Later Han had been wrestling with for some time and which left it vulnerable by the time we come to it in the novel. Fine, Iâll say it: I watched the Kingdom of Heaven movie once years ago and have hated it since.
You know, parts of it weren't as bad as I was expecting.
And then there's the rest of it . . .
There are a couple scenes which I remember enjoying. When I first saw it, I remember just thinking âwow that was disappointing. Whatever,â and moving on. But then after I saw how loved it is, I felt like I must have missed something. I sometimes consider rewatching it to see what I missed, but I think thatâd just make me more annoyed with it lol.

This was my favorite episode so far. Not many people have invested the time and energy to really understand the Way of Great Peace or the beliefs of its followers. I donât think youâre likely to hear this particular discussion elsewhere. It was extremely informative and serves as a great reminder that thereâs always more to learn.
Having @sunfin3k as the guest this time really helped and it is what we were hoping for. People like the Yellow Turbans but don't usually have much idea about things the Way of Great Peace

Heroes of Chaos by Baptiste Pinson Wu
Hello all! You may remember a few months I posted a review talking about a new historical fiction novel set in the Three Kingdoms! Well book 2 is now out! Find it here.
Heroes of Chaos follows Liao Hua during the coalition against Dong Zhuo and the political manoeuvring as the alliance fell apart.
The author is taking artistic license with his early life (after all we donât actually know what Hua was up to at this time) to place him at the centre of events in ways that I doubt anyone could predict.
Like the last novel, it is written in a 1st person style reminiscent of Bernard Cornwellâs Last Kingdom series (now also a popular TV show) and fans of his work will love this, especially those who are also like the Three Kingdom era.
The author strikes a great balance between Liao Huaâs story being central to the plot whilst also telling the tale of the time period. I would really recommend reading it.
But it is worth stressing again that at times Wu has chosen to follow the narrative of RoTK rather than the historical accounts. I know some will find it off putting, but knowing that was the case I find it at a hugely enjoyable read.
It is also self-published. That means that its perhaps not quite as polished as a traditionally published novel would be. But Baptiste Wu takes his work seriously and he finishes it to a high standard - he is certainly one of the best self published writers Iâve come across. Â

Interview with Baptiste Pinson Wu

With his second book three kingdoms Heroes of Chaos book launched this week, @sunfin3k and @dongzhou3kingdoms interview (at the time, was not our editor) about his first book Yellow Sky Revolt, the main character Liao Hua, the Yellow Turbans, Cao Cao and the three kingdoms generally. A friendly chat, we decided to let this run the full length. This interview is going to relax our no spoiler about the era rule so avoid if you wish to avoid hearing about what happens beyond the Yellow Turbans.

This is the end of our first season, The Rise of the Yellow Sky, with season 2 going to be following on the chaos at the Han court, chapters 3 and 4 of the novel and another deep dive with new and existing guests. One of the new guests has a cat, another is a member of the undead. Will be a delay till season two but we hope to see you again soon.

Iâm so excited for this episode! Its my first one as a guest & as regular followers of my Tumblr know... the Yellow Turbans are an area Iâve done a fair bit of study of. Therefore itâs my first appearance as a guest rather than host.
As I went through the episode I mentioned a few sources which I wanted to link you too in case anyone wanted to do some follow up reading!
1) The Scripture on Great Peace: The Taiping Jing and the Beginnings of Daoism by Barbara Hendrischke
This is the religious text that we discuss that the Yellow Turbans may have possessed. You can buy it here and read my reviews here.
2)Â The Rebellion of the Yellow Turbans by Paul Michard
Paul Michardâs thesis and a seminal source on the Yellow Turbans although modern scholars have challenged it in a few areas. At the current time I canât find a way of purchasing it but you can read my review here.
3)Â The Date of the âTaiping Jingâ by B. J. Mansvelt Beck
Does what it says on the tin - discusses the date of the Taiping Jing in more depth then we manage in the episode. Read it on Jstor and read my review here!
4)Â Who were the Yellow Turbans? A Revisionist View by Chi-yun Chen
This article asks questions of the traditional perception of the Yellow Turbans. The author makes some good points but there is much here I disagree with. Read with caution. Its also on Jstor and my review is here.
5)Â Tsâao Tsâao and the Rise of Wei: the Early Years by Carl Leban
This is another thesis and this one looks at the life of Cao Cao (sometimes spelt Tsâao Tsâao like in the title), however its chapter on the Yellow Turbans is really interesting. Again Iâm unsure where you can purchase this at the current time and sadly Iâve not yet got round to reviewing it! Sorry to be of little help on this source!
