I’m revisiting my NWR Fleet. Here are the new engines No. 20 and No. 21

🌌Diane the Midnight Engine🌌
At the start of the holiday season, a heritage railway from the mainland gifted two engines to Sir Topham Hatt as an alliance between them and Sodor. Diane wasn’t found at the scrapyard when Murdoch was purchased because her luck happened earlier than his. She’s a freight engine for the main line because her locomotive class, the S15 Class was built to do heavy express goods. She finds any mixed traffic engine to complain about pulling goods trains to be quite silly.
Some historic info on Diane’s class: Originally designed by Urie starting in 1920. Later, after modifications by Maunsell, the S15 class was regarded by locomotive crews as an excellent goods engine best known for working heavy night express goods trains between Exeter, Southampton and Nine Elms. The S15s were also very capable passenger engines, being able to deputise in situations where there was a shortage of passenger locomotives during peak holiday periods.
🌱Winnifred the Western Freight Engine🌱
Originally, Winnifred wasn’t gonna be engine no. 21 but after some thinking, I decided she’ll come to Sodor shortly after Diane during the holiday season of 1973. Adele’s former owner, Dr. Fred Youell kept in touch with Sir Topham Hatt who once commented to him that bigger engines are needed more even though he doesn’t want to turn away little engines. This puts Adele’s previous owner into action and he eventually finds a GWR 2800 that needs a new home so he gifts Winnifred the upcoming holiday. Adele’s previous owner actually existed IRL Dr. Fred Youell. According to what I found, he led the Middleton Railway Preservation Society.
Winnifred’s locomotive class was used for heavy freight but would pull passenger trains when necessary, making her a mainline engine for heavy freight like Murdoch. Being Great Western she clicked naturally with Duck, Oliver, Ursula and like them she takes pride in that heritage. She does though get easily jaded towards engines who mainly(or prefer to) pull passenger trains.
Their main resting spot is Vicarstown which has 11 berths. They joined the NWR Fleet before the Norramby engines joined too. Jinty is engine no. 22, Pug 23, Lavender 24 and Becky 25. I want a total of 25 numbered steamies because twenty five has the digits 2 and 5, put those two in addition and it equals 7 which is a nod to the OG/Classic 7 Engines(Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby).
Edward - NWR engine no. 2, mixed traffic doing local passenger service and freight on the Brendam BL
Boco - NWR engine no. D3, mixed traffic pulling heavier trains than Edward and Stella
Bill & Ben - privately owned by the Sodor China Clay Company, frequently at Brendam, occasionally helping in the Wellsworth yard
Derek - NWR engine no. D5, short-distance lightweight freight and helping at Sodor China Clay pits
Salty - privately owned by the Brendam Docks Company, dockside work
Stella - NWR engine no. 8, lightweight freight for longer distances on the Brendam BL and occasional passenger service when not doing passenger service on the main line
Sophie - NWR engine no. 9, short distance passenger service and freight, station pilot at Wellsworth
An engine shed with three berths at Wellsworth was built in 1954. Edward, Stella and Sophie moved in becoming the Wellsworth trio. Sophie finished her business at Crovan’s Gate that same year so she went straight to Wellsworth whereas her sister rested at Knapford first. Boco came in 1965 and rested at Knapford. In 1967 the engine shed got remodeled down to two berths for more room in the yard and track rearrangement. During construction Edward moved to Tidmouth, Boco at Crovan’s Gate, Stella and Sophie at Knapford. After completion, Edward and Boco moved to Wellsworth. A year later in 1968, Derek was repaired after his attempt working with Bill and Ben in Double Teething Troubles, Sir Topham Hatt had him move to Wellsworth. Its shed only had 2 berths now and there was still a free spot at Tidmouth so Edward moved to rest there again. Salty came to Sodor in 1971.
Why did Edward and not Boco move when Derek came? While STH did make the final decision, Edward also wanted Boco to use his focus on helping Derek instead of taking on the big 3; Edward knew he could do it, he was one of the few who knew them too well, especially when compared to Boco.
Why not just build more berths? Shouldn’t the same happen like Wellsworth the first time around? Charles Hatt took over the NWR in 1954, for sure he remembered the lifestyle of being extra careful of necessities during WW2. Despite his seemingly well-off family, living through that time period most likely made him more aware about handling both quantity and quality, even during the 50s and 60s when WW2 was still fresh.
The reason why the numbering order is different in this AU is because the real dates of their locomotive classes were withdrawn and weather or not all were scrapped. Stella would have to arrive at Sodor no later than 1951 meaning she(and Sophie) arrived before Duck(1955). Duck’s debut and stories stay intact like canon! Same with Donald, Douglas, Oliver.
I’m mainly combining Class!TAF + RWS. Here’s Bear the mainline diesel from the RWS and like Jinty & Pug, he’ll be added.
He will still keep his blue livery after moving to Sodor, as you can see! He arrived in 1967. While he did get to know the engines who primarily rested and worked around Tidmouth, his shed was at Crovan’s Gate. His class, the BR Class 35 began withdrawals in 1971, the same year the shed at Vicarstown was restored, making it his current resting spot.
When not doing freight or passenger services from eastern Sodor, Bear would pull the express when Henry and James were unavailable as Gordon’s backups. Then Sir Topham Hatt moved him to responsibilities of pulling trains for stopping passenger service from Vicarstown to Knapford after Stella was needed for construction at Brendam. He would later become Becky’s backup for the express from Vicarstown.

NWR1991 made this story ;somebody helps Sir Topham Hatt pay off the debts from WW2 by purchasing the Norramby branchline. This inspired me:
The Norramby branchline in my AU had a unique position; while it was part of the BR, it was also on Sodor and would eventually have the potential for steam engines to avoid scrap after 1967. Somewhere in the early 1960s Jinty and Pug were brought to the Norramby branchline. Lavender later joined them in 1967. After the Norramby line became part of the NWR in 1974 Jinty and Pug asked if they could be regular engines on the Kirk Ronan branch? That way they could still be near Norramby to show the ropes when Arthur and Adele are sent east. Sometimes they’ll still see Lavender when at Vicarstown or on the Norramby branch. They also decided to pick different liveries after being BR black like they were in the books. They’re engines no. 22, 23, and 24 respectively, joining the fleet shortly before Becky who they become good friends with. Jinty is outgoing while Pug is much more shy. The latter looks up to Percy.
For Lavender, Rosie was her original name. Being a USATC S100 she wants nothing to do with WW2. She also stays in the shed during fireworks and foggy days(fog designators sound too much like gunshots and bombs). Before she was meant to be scrapped, she passed by a field of lavender and thought it would be the last beautiful thing she would see. After getting purchased, she was asked her name? She replied: Lavender💜
Being smaller engines Jinty, Pug and Lavender didn’t go past their branchline often but once in a while they were loaned to work on the Kirk Ronan line and this would increase after Claire’s service on the main line extended to Tidmouth. In 1968 was also the year when the Norramby branchline entered in strange limbo; after agreements with the fat controller and negotiating with the BR, they decided not to scrap the steam engines they had living on the island but was still an extension of the BR. They weren’t too keen on the diesels coming to their branchline but some did. Later in 1970 though the diesels were sent back, leaving it being just the three, this time for longer. In 1974, Norramby became part of the NWR to fully prevent them from getting scrapped by the BR. While Jinty and Pug became regulars on Kirk Ronan, Lavender went to be Vicarstown’s station pilot.
In 1967, Becky was luckily taken in by a heritage railway and earned the reputation of being smooth as butter. In the early 1970s the heritage railway went through some failures which forced them to cut back on how many engines they were able to keep. Once again Becky had to be taken to a new home or be scrapped. Fortunately her old home got in contact with Dr. Fred Youell (part of the Middleton Railway Preservation Society) who had connections with Sir Topham Hatt. The fat controller purchased her to utilize services on eastern Sodor and be another engine besides Bear to pull the express from Vicarstown where she now primarily rests with him, Ursula, Murdoch, Arthur, Lavender and sometimes Henry. By the time she came to Sodor, everyone, that also includes the diesels, had their names on them. Her name is actually Rebecca but she prefers Becky.
I’m limiting how many steam engines are added to the character roster because that’s much material to utilize and that’s not even counting the narrow gauge engines and diesels. The definitive end of steam in the UK was around Oliver’s arrival on Sodor. The characters added afterwards need to have exceptions, I can only do so many until it’ll get too repetitive. In a way, Becky’s a callback to the OG 7 engines with Toby who also looked very different being the latest member in that wave of characters. Becky’s personality is fine already and her locomotive class was still possible to find in the 1970s. She’s a rectangular shape, another nod to Toby and kinda like diesels. That and being the final steam engine to join Sodor can symbolize the inevitable change from steam to diesels. Her class was also working most of its career during the decline of steam, not the last though. I’m also well aware she’s controversial; IMO though the problem isn't characters sharing similar traits, it’s how it is carried out that makes the difference. Their backgrounds such as the locomotive class they are and which railway they were formerly part of should be taken into account too.
In 1962, relatives of Sodor’s nobility decided to move to the island and took their private engine with them. The engine was a GWR Castle Class called Ursula, who was she was purchased by them way back in the 1920s when she was a brand new engine.
After arriving to Sodor, Ursula always rested at Crovan’s Gate then later it was sometimes at the Vicarstown shed when it was restored in 1971. She gets along better with Duck(on the 2nd pic here) and Oliver than Gordon, Henry and James despite being a big engine herself. Partly because she annoys them with The Great Western attitude that Duck has. Serving nobility can sometimes get the better of her and sometimes envies the freedom the engines of the NWR have.
Sir Topham Hatt acknowledged and respected that Ursula is a family relic to the Norramby family and their emotional connection to her. He hires Ursula to work on the main line temporarily at times much to her delight and the Norrambys saw this as beneficial.
It was the early 1970s. The fat controller was receiving letters by Sudrians and visitors alike if more steam engines were going to be added to the NWR? At this point in time, there’s been more efforts across the UK to preserve steam locomotives. Sir Topham Hatt first searched for an engine in danger of scrap (Murdoch), then he got a request by a museum to take one of their engines (Emily), then getting notice by engineers to take in their freelance hybrid (Arthur). More additions were to take in a preserved engine from an individual (Adele), engines who worked on the Norramby branch(Jinty & Pug) and an engine in need of a new home from a heritage railway (Becky).
Murdoch the Mighty Engine is a BR Standard Class 9F for main line heavy freight like in canon but unlike the TVS where his accents are green and red, it’s BR blue here. When he and Emily first met, he was jealous of her for being sent to a museum and resented her for throwing that life away ‘cause he stayed in the Woodham Brothers’ scrapyard for a long time until the NWR saved him in 1970. In fact, one of the reasons why he desired peace and quiet was because of his grievances that he wasn’t put into a museum.
-His debut stays very similar like it does in canon, especially the sheep scene.
-He becomes good friends with Edward, Henry, Arthur, Emily, Toby, Boco, Percy, Thomas, Becky

Arthur the Maroon Engine is a freelance that was a combination of a BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2(withdrawn in 1967) and LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 2-6-2T (withdrawn in 1967). The reason behind his creation was to be purchased by the NWR to help his builders’ financial situation. Despite being brand new, having the knowledge of financial issues can explain his want to keep a spotless record. He came to Sodor in 1972.
-In Arthur’s debut, it’s Bill and Ben who get him into trouble, not Thomas.
-Utilizing the eastern areas of Sodor, he’s good friends with Murdoch, Jinty, Pug and Becky. He’s also quite familiar with the Wellsworth-Brendam engines
-While he and Thomas don’t see each other as often, they get along very well partly thanks to the events during Something Fishy. He also gets along well with Emily.

Note: I’m aware that Unlucky Tug did a bit of a similar backstory for Murdoch regarding the scrapyard but I did research of my own, decided on this backstory, and mentioned it on my earlier posts on Emily which was before his video about Murdoch was posted. No, I don’t expect my version/AU to be groundbreaking nor accusing anyone for copying. I’m not even claiming any ideas either. I just wanted to clarify.
The Earl in my AU, he has elements of both the RWS and the one we see in the TVS. During the 1950s-70s he does look significantly younger. Why did Stephen get renamed to Samuel? Because despite being a replica he still wanted to have his own identity so the Earl gave him a different name. Plus we have Stephen Hatt.
Lady Enya isn’t canon, she’s made-up; a tall woman of strong Surdian roots, accompanied by her lady in waiting and two bodyguards.

🤍a GER L77 that does suburban and mail services primarily on the eastern areas of Sodor. Primarily a freight engine but will do passenger trains once in a while.
💖a.k.a. Lady, named in honor of Burnett & Tasha(residents of Thomas's branchline)'s granddaughter. She's a Sodor-made replica of the NER Class H, then got rented by a film studio and after that she became a floater/wildcard who often pulls goods trains when not pulling her coach, Ophelia a.k.a. Old Slow Coach.

Numbering is different because of the historical context for their locomotive classes which means they had to arrive before some of the canon characters BUT their stories stay intact; OCs don’t interfere with that. OG 7 engines stay the same, Stella-8, Sophie-9, Duck-10, Donald-11, Douglas-12, Claire-13, Oliver-14, Lady Lily-15, Murdoch-16, Arthur-17, Emily-18, Adele-19, Diane-20, Jinty -21, Pug-22, Winnifred-23, Lavender-24, Rebecca “Becky”-25
In S2 there was the Big 3 and the Ffarquar Boys. IDK why but out of the Classic 7 Engines it felt odd for Edward to not be in one too. So, now he's in one! This is an AU that includes my OCs. Nothing romantic here, Edward and Stella have a bro/sis relationship and it’s completely platonic with Sophie too.
According to the RWS timeline, Boco came in 1965. The sisters arrived in 1951 but stayed at Crovan’s Gate until 1953-54. Until Boco came it was just the three as Wellsworth’s trio.
If you know Naruto, specifically Sakura Haruno, then you’ll understand this. Inner Sophie might appear out in the open that only engines can see; this is extremely rare. Inner Sakura in action here.
