He’d been caught but he’s hardly the type to show it. Instead, he takes a sip of the amber liquid, thin lips curling in silent appreciation.

James wasn’t the only who like to study others. In fact, the handler had made a CAREER out of the fact.

He motions for a refill, his air of indifference put on rather THICK.

“No, and do try the Old Particular Craigellachie, the 17 year. Might I also suggest some water? A drop of water truly brings it to life.” Easing into the seat next to Merlin James also motioned for a drink, his own being finished with a steady sip. 

“Look, I uh. I appreciate that you and your band of luxury spooks are just trying to make sure you’ve got all the intelligence channels open that you could possibly need, but really, I don’t have that much to offer you,” he said, tracing a finger around the rim of his mug. Dealing with Gareth was easy, given Gareth never asked for much aside from a second set of eyes and maybe a bit of psychic field snooping. He called it mind-reading, given it was essentially the same thing, but the spy never really asked about that nuance.

Whatever reason Gareth had passed on his information to his comrades was, he wasn’t entirely sold on becoming a call-boy for an intelligence agency. SHIELD was already touchy enough about him as it was, without needing any more reason to be so. “I’m far from a professional, you see. I’m just a historical consultant.”

“Oh, I assure you, I’m not here for your assistance on anything.”

“I’m passing on a message. I suppose I should have started with that. I just needed to confirm who you are…” She still wasn’t entirely sold, but the address and mannerisms were correct. “Early yesterday morning my associates neutralized a conflict in Argentina. Your name and face came up a lot while we were investigating the area. A friend of yours asked me to come by and warn you.”

To say they’d crossed a line would be too lighthearted. The Scotsman took his job seriously, and while he found James to be more than adequate as a COMPANION, the thought of being found out turns his stomach.

And yet, being offered tea by a man in a robe that easily cost as much as one of the cabs they owned wasn’t unpleasant in any way.

He moves, doesn’t bother with buttoning his shirt as he sits carefully on Egyptian cotton sheets, mussed and needing to be laundered.

“Well, I heard that Gawain has taken up knitting. His mother feels that it will help with that pesky hand tremor of his.” The aforementioned knight had developed one, while he denied it Lancelot couldn’t help but feel it was work related. “I’m not sure if he told you.”

There was much more juicy gossip fluttering around their lives, but each one seemed to lewd and scandalous. Doubly so since he and Merlin had joined the fray. James felt it was the least he could do to spare the older man.
