Why and who killed Itama Senju?
it always angers me to see this frame because God knows how much I am revolted by violence toward children. Contrary to adults women or men, children have ZERO way to defend themselves physically or mentally. They can't comprehend what happened to them and don't have words to express it. The earlier a human soul is broken the harder to reconstruct themselves as functional and balanced adult. And Naruto shows us countless characters in this situation. Hence why protection of children is so important and so severely punished in any normal society. To break a child is to break a future generation from roots. Don't count in me to show any compassion against death penalty for child molesters, rapists, slave traffickers and other disgusting creature that evil can create.
In this image obviously the first time I saw it, I was filled by anger towards the Uchihas, how could they be so cruel? But then with time, I realise how biased are Hashirama recollection of the past. Except from the violence of his father towards him, we never saw any mistakes done by the Senjus clan during their wars. They were always the good guys with an open-minded and how Uchiha should have feel privileged that they offer peace treaty ! How stupid was Izuna to refuse it, even in the verge of death? Hashirama vaguely evoked that both side did kill children. But it's not the same if I told you clearly how this child have been tortured and by whom. And that's what happen with this frame. The Uchihas are solely seen as evil beast, with no explanation. Never the Senjus.
Re-reading again Naruto with less emotional side, something immediately catch my attention. Why do they need 5 grown-up Uchihas, apparently highly skilled shinobi against a mere child? How old is Itama? Maybe 5 years old? It's ridiculous. One of them can do the job alone, why do they need to stick together in this cruel act. And why do we see the face of one of them with a very distinctive scars? It reminds me Kenshin somehow don't ask me why. With this type of scar you can't pass unnoticed in the street. He can't be a spy but definitely someone often involved in frontline's battlefield. Why again wasting his energy in a toddler?
I guess his identity belongs to the elephant cemetery where rest in peace Hikaku Uchiha, Madara POV, Izuna POV and Warring state era full storyline, so slide with me down the headcanon toboggan.
This looks to me like a personal Vendetta. You know this biblical expression : an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Like a retaliation for someone precious the Uchihas lost before. And I bet on the death of one or two brothers of Madara, who were also son's of their leader Tajima. I wish we know how disgusting was the death of those two brothers who, by the way, didn't even have a name. We know how Uchihas are prompt to love and to hate. If they were so merciless towards Itama, in which fashion did Madara's brothers die in the hand of Senjus?
They collectively took revenge on this poor little boy, because they collectively have a grudge toward the Senjus for their loss. Itama is not a threat in himself who necessitate all those people, he is a threat for who he is : Butsana's son, the future of the Senju. And they might as well knew precisely who he was and how hurtful it would be for their sworn enemies.
Itama's death is immediately followed by the second meeting between Hashirama and Madara by the river. And by his attitude you can tell that Madara's brothers were not dead the same day nor the same week than Hashirama's. He always reacts very emotionally when anything is involving his family. Remember how quickly he switched when Izuna's life was threaten by Butsuma? or his firm grip to the ground when he sworn to protect his only brother left, no matter what? So we can tell he had done his mourning for a while (months? year?).
However his expression when he learned about Itama's death can be interpret in many levels. Yes he empathizes with his friend. But surely he already has doubt on Hashirama being a Senju. And the timing can confirm his doubt. Back to his compound, he surely heard that a Butsana's child had been eliminated and then your talented ninja friend is mourning his little brother freshly deceased...🤔
Anyway we will never know unless we got a prequel ! Or Kishimoto's phone number.
