sakata gintoki x f! reader. part two. previous part.
You had given everything away by looking at him like that. You wanted to part ways with him in peace, but of course the love and protection you felt whenever Gintoki was around came to play. He was your former husband, after all, and it was once his duty to protect you.
Funnily enough, it didn't feel as though you were both divorced.
Gintoki would still take you out on dates, hang out with you, defend your honour and keep men away from you, especially the men you were interested in pursuing romantically. He'd join you in the shower to help wash you off when you weren't able to, would let you sleep with him when the night was too cold, or if you had a nightmare, would swing by your place without saying anything, and was just present.
Of course he'd notice your injuries, of course he'd notice when you're in danger!
You lean against the wall, breathing shallow as you cling to your wounded arm, your tears mixing with the rain. You look at the sky.
An old enemy had resurfaced and was out for revenge. You had defeated his entire platoon during your good years, and left him for dead as a reminder to never step foot on Earth. What a silly thing of you to do. He was an Amanto, after all.
You could feel your heart beating frantically, and the woman who you once were came in flashes. You grin widely, coated from head to toe in blood. The trauma took your voice away, but the fight brought it back.
It was 20 against 1. You have taken out 10 so far.
A battle cry ripped from your throat as you slashed one's throat, his stomach, her back, another stomach.
You mentally count the lives you were taking, and the attacks your body was receiving.
A knife pierced your back; you didn't feel it.
A knife pierced your side; you didn't feel it.
You raise your arms to jump straight at the man who was the cause of all this pain and destruction.
20 was taken out before you could attack.
18 and 19 were taken out.
A firm hand pulled you back.
Adrenaline coursed through you.
He hasn't heard your voice in years.
He takes the knives out of your body and placed you to the ground as Katsura dealt with the rest.
Your breathing was ragged. Your eyes frantic.
"Gintoki?" You say again, your voice failing you.
His jaw clenched, focusing on bandaging you up.
Your body twitched. The adrenaline faded, and the pain shot through you like acid. A pained cry left your throat.
He was surprised. "Oi, stay still. Name?" He held you down.
All you could say was his name. You were panicking. He let out a tsk, eyes wide himself. He pinned your hands above your head, keeping them from hitting him as you thrashed about.
You were in so much pain. You've lost so much. Battled far too long.
But Sakata Gintoki was a jealous, selfish man. He wasn't going to let death take you away from him that easily.
He said your name, telling you to calm down, let him take care of you, but his voice reached deaf ears. He was in pain just looking at you. So, with his body covering yours, protecting you, his one hand wrapped around both of your wrists to keep you from flailing about, he pressed his mouth to yours: hot, greedy.
"You're not going to die," Gintoki said against your mouth. "You're going to live." It took awhile but you weakly kiss back, still in pain, and Sakata bandaged you up as he kissed you. He was good with his hands, after all, he could even bandage you up in your sleep. "You're so stupid, Name, you should've... Fuck, you should've told me."
You couldn't say anything else. You felt safe again.
When Toshi and the other Shinsengumi members arrived at the scene, they didn't expect to find Odd Jobs manhandling you let alone the two of you in the middle of a passionate kiss. Their cheeks flush, agape, and Toshi let out a tsk. Seeing as Kondo was busy staring at the scene like a horny, love-deprived fool, Toshi gave the orders.
"You guys deal with the bodies," Toshi snapped. "Clearly Odd Jobs has got the situation handled."
"Handled? The Chief is locking lips." Okita deadpanned, but followed the orders given.
Toshi let out a huff, looked behind him, and when he saw Gintoki cradling your face as though you were the most precious thing to him, he couldn't help but smile.
When you woke up, the first thing you registered was you weren't at home. Your vision blurred for a second and you frown. One hand was massaging your feet, another hand was brushing your hair, and another hand was pressed on your stomach, the other on your right boob.
Kagura? You thought. Your vision became clear again.
Your head was on Kagura's lap, Shinpachi was massaging your feet, and it was Gintoki that was being the creep with his hand on your breast. You shot up and look around and visibly relaxed.
"What? Can't speak now?" Gintoki says, smirking slightly.
"Oi, Gin-san, be nice!" Shinpachi scolded him. Then he sheepishly smiled at you. "Name-san, how are you feeling?" He noticed your gaze on his hands. "Oh, I hope it's okay with you! I didn't want your feet to swell."
Your expression softens. You smile. It was fine with you. He looked relieved.
"Name sister, Shinpachi might have a foot fetish, be careful." Kagura says, giving him a deadpanned look.
"Kagura-chan, that's disgusting! Name-chan, ignore her."
Gintoki huffed. Picked his nose. "Kagura's right, Name, be careful of our four eyes over here."
Shinpachi's jaw dropped, his eye twitching, but when you pat his head reassuringly, he relaxed. Gintoki side-eyed your hand and Kagura pouted.
You pat her head too. She laughs.
Your eyes crinkle as you smile, and when the dull pain registered, the smile was wiped off your face. Only Gintoki noticed.
"You two, go out and get us something to eat." Gintoki says, handing Kagura the money and her eyes lit up.
She snatched the money out of his hands and forced Shinpachi up by his hair with a promise to buy something yummy for you. She slammed the door shut, effectively silencing Shinpachi's screams.
It was just you and Sakata now.
He said nothing, neither did you.
He moved towards his desk to pick up a pen and paper, closed the drawer, and made his way over. You were looking at your hands.
Neither of you spoke / had written anything for 15 minutes.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Gintoki asked.
You look at the pen. Pick it up.
I'm not your responsibility anymore.
His jaw clenched. "Bullshit."
You divorced me, asshole.
"It's better this way," He says, looking out the window.
Then don't expect me to ask you for help when I'm in danger.
You tug his yakuta. He hummed. Looked at the paper. Scoffed. Finally met your eyes.
"You don't want to tell me when you're in danger but you easily come crawling into my bed when it's convenient. It should be the opposite."
You give him your judgemental stare. He huffed.
"What? You have It backwards, Name."
Such a hypocritical bastard. He's the one that comes crawling. You shrug your shoulders and look at the paper.
Gintoki dragged out a sigh. Put his arm around your shoulder. "Fine, I was being a hypocrite, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that."
"I'm mad at you for not telling me."
Toshi wouldn't do this to me.
"Toshi?" Gintoki practically sneered. "His name is Hijikata to you. Seriously, I don't know what you see in that bastard. Hijikata, not Toshi, Hijikata. Okay?"
"Why?" Gintoki wailed dramatically. "Next time I'm seeing him, I'm beating him up, I swear-" He silenced himself when you laugh.
He hasn't heard you laugh in a long time.
His eyes soften, the sound hitting his heart and for a moment, Gintoki couldn't breathe.
His arms were around you and slowly, getting over your surprise, you hug him back.
He purred like a cat, nuzzled his face into your neck, his eyes wet with tears.
"You tell me everything. Everything." Gintoki whispered, squeezing you tightly. "When you're happy, when you're sad, when you're in danger, fucking tell me you beautiful piece of shit."
You wanted to speak, but you were scared to. It's been so long holding a conversation.
"Hearing you say my name wasn't enough for me," Gintoki pulled away, gathering your face in his hands. "Kissing you wasn't enough for me." He brushed his thumb over your flushed cheeks. "I'll always need you, you hearing me? Always. That's why from this day forward, I won't let anyone hurt you or hold you back, and that includes your voice."
You stare at his determined face and slowly nod.
You didn't mean to stop talking, it was easier that's all. Your voice was used for screaming into battle, shouting orders and when the warplanes and bombs and clashing of swords was silent, it was hard to form a proper sentence without it being an order to attack, or defend. The War had roared on for almost a decade, after all. You grew tired of it.
But you were willing to try again.
"O-Okay." It was so quiet, Gintoki would've missed it, but he didn't.
He kissed you between your eyes. Wrapped you in his arms for a hug. Let your exhausted body lean against him to rest.
Baby steps, he thought, and he rested soon after.
