okay headcanon about the whole ‘roman asked to go to military school no he didn’t yes he did’ and the ‘shiv chose logan over caroline no she didn’t she was a kid she was always manipulative’ situations
succession has this pattern of the characters talking about past events and all having differing opinions about what happened (the dog pound, roman and military school, shiv and caroline and the divorce, how much did the kids know about the cruises scandal etc etc)
in romans mind he was ‘sent away’ and in shiv’s mind caroline ‘let dad take’ the kids in the divorce but connor says roman asked to go to military school (he later says to kendall that logan ‘sent the weaker dog away’ but stick with me here) and caroline says shiv wanted to be with logan and she always gets what she wants. shiv says she was ten, caroline says she was thirteen. i think everyone can be right and wrong at the same time, it’s just perspective.
the way i see it is: caroline and logan are arguing constantly, they don’t get along, logan is ferrying the kids from the uk to new york and back again. the travel, the arguing, the instability and whatever childhood trauma u think roman has all combine to leave roman unhinged, upset, melting down constantly and when logan and caroline finally divorce, all he wants is normality. so he asks to stay with caroline - the parent he knows actually loves him.
logan, of course, won’t let that happen. caroline says she let logan have custody so the kids got to keep their shares. so logan gives roman two options - grow up, suck it up and come to new york or stay in the uk where caroline is but ur going to military school to fix whatever’s wrong with you (also! confirmed cause i watched the scene again he does indeed say st. andrews so like, this tracks in terms of canon. Anyway)
so they’re all right. roman did ask to go to military school but he also got sent there after ‘going weird’ because logan wanted to straighten him out and ‘send the weak one away’. shiv was taken away by logan in the divorce and it was his fault that caroline never saw her but she also didn’t even try to stay in the uk and be close to her - not like roman did anyway. maybe the arguing picks up when she’s ten, maybe the divorce is finalised when she’s thirteen.
that’s why roman is still caroline’s favourite, that’s why caroline resents shiv so much (probably worse if u subscribe to the romanshiv twin theory) and feels distant from kendall, it’s why roman thinks he was sent there because he didn’t really have a choice, it’s why connor says he asked to go but also understands it wasn’t really up to him, it’s why everyone’s memories of it all are blurred. whatever logan said that one time about the past being fake
