And the most ironic part is that I didn't even used to like Ada that much. I loved her aesthetics and overall elegant and unbothered energy as a teenager (at the end of the day fighting zombies and mutants in high heels and a red dress is still very much of a flex), but I wasn't that much interested in her character (I was more of a Jill Valentine or Rebecca Chambers girlie).

But now with the RE2 and RE4 Remakes and the Separate Ways DLC I was impressed by how, while she's still interwined with Leon, she's finally given a more humane, capable and sensible characterization, where she's actually showing herself regretful of her previous actions while also knowing that there's no turning back, and seems to be rather trapped into this rotten system where she's either an asset or a liability while thinking that her life is always going to be like this anyway, therefore she's accepting her job as it was and enjoying herself in her role as a coping mechanism. However, her betraying Wesker out of free will instead of listening to some other superiors' orders or because she was working as a third-party agent basically shows how this time she's finally going to redeem herself and finally have some character development. I also love her relationship with Leon more in the remakes even though now it's pretty clear that it's not as playful or romantic as it used to be but much more distant and cold, since it furtherly highlights their inner conflicts and sense of awareness (instead of having these two playing a continuous cat-and-mouse game). Of coursly, the way her character is executed is still left to be criticized -especially since a common argument people use in order to defend her is pointing put how she's saving the exact same yt blonde man, thus centering her character even more around him- and I'd much rather prefer her having her own individual game with no Leon around even if that means having these two officially separated and no longer romantically interested in each other (I'm still mourning RE8 Ada Wong), but for now it's left to see what will the next RE games and remakes offer us.

It's pretty clear that a lot of the hatred she's currently receiving stems from the fact that now she's finally portrayed more as an individual in her own right rather than a concept or a stereotype people could conveniently project their fantasies on (and Lily Gao's performance highly reinforces this as well). It's even worse when a significant part of her fans like her for her looks and/or treat her as a romantic device for Leon. Then you're having the Incels and perverted creeps who are basically hating women for every and any reason and won't hesitate to demonize Ada or "put her in her place" while simultaneously project their disgusting standards in term of an ideal woman onto Leon and different female characters around (Ashley, Claire, Sherry and Grace) because they're assuming that Leon *has* to be interested only in white women significantly younger than him and "expect" them to bear him children in order to furtherly show his manliness (and much more of this shit even the OG Leon would be utterly disgusted by), and the (white) Leon Fangirls who find it hard to project themselves onto an asian woman (let aside one who's very much her own vibe), therefore they're overexagerrating her cold and ruthless persona even more and try to reduce her again to the Dragon Lady Trope much more than the OG Ada Wong already was.
