I feel that the outlast trials fandom has a problem with making out their favorites to be victims especially when the evidence is actually just that they were the perpetrators in their life.
They feel bad about liking them, so they feel the need to soften their actions. A lot of them tend to have a “I can fix him and comfort him” mentality about it too. And so they’re uncomfortable with the idea that the character isn’t just a victim that could be fixed by modern therapy techniques and some nice words.
They purposely misread text, implications or use voice lines and cut content that were obviously removed for a reason.
Typically they tend to do this with characters who are violent misogynists. Either by making out a female character to be the real abuser and therefore at fault for his future actions. Or inserting 500 jokes about “Every time a man hurts a woman it’s because his true soulmate is man!” To basically excuse their violence (often sexual violence) towards women.
if they’re forced to confront that the character is actually responsible for his own actions in the story they will, at most, begrudgingly acknowledge he’s a bad person but “everyone in outlast trials is!” Without actually ever incorporating this into their “analysis” or doing the same for female characters (or any other character they don’t find as attractive).
Having a headcanon isn’t an analysis of the character, especially when that headcanon is used to soften or excuse their actions, particularly towards women.
