   @labruined   because   matthew   deserves   a   hug

her   heart   clenches   at   the   fear   slipping   through.   he’s   hurting   and   andi   doesn’t   know   what   to   do.   they   all   have   demons,   monsters   forever   lurking   in   the   recesses   of   their   minds,   but   these   beasts   can’t   be   slayed.   andi   would   like   nothing   more   than   to   destroy   whatever   torments   her   family.   if   only   she   knew   how.

 instead   she   offers   the   only   comfort   she   can,   rushing   forward   to   envelope   matthew   in   her   arms.   hand   rubbing   soothing   motions   into   his   back.   if   she   could,   andi   would   shield   him   from   the   world.   they’ve   gone   through   too   much.   had   so   much   ripped   from   them.   taken   from   their   families,   so   they   made   one   of   their   own.

        THEY   WON’T   TAKE   ANY   MORE.    SHE   WON’T   LET   THEM!

 DRONE   OF   VOICES   IS   A   PLEASANT   WHITE   NOISE  .     a   dreary   sunday   calls   for   rain  .      if   she   didn’t    escape   to   the   diner    the   combination   would   have    lulled   her   to   sleep  .      HAWKINS   WAS   A   LOT   LESS   EXCITING   THAN   SHE   IMAGINED  .       she   had   only   spent   time   there    in   the   minds   of   others    or     trapped     in   the   place   of   her     nightmares  .        now  ,   actively   living   in   the   town   after    years    in   the   city   was    …   dull  .        quiet   lives   were   less   complicated  !       it’s   preferred  .      it’s     foolish     to   believe   that   quiet   meant    nothing   ever   happened  .

 company   was   not    invited    but   it   was    received  .       space   across  is    silently    occupied    &    it   draws   uma’s   attention   from   the   news   paper   she’d   been   absentmindedly   staring   at  .       white   noise   is   blocked   out    as   mind   tunes   itself   to   the   guest  .        uma’s   eyes   narrow  .        before   hearing   anything   she   recognizes   this   mind  .         SHE’S    BEEN    HERE    BEFORE  .        it’d   been   years  .                i    promise    i’m    gonna    get    us    out  ,    okay  ?       one    day  ,   i   promise  .      ———         LIAR  .               a   glance   over   her   shoulder  ,   weak   &   drained   in   the   woods  ,   was   the    last   thought    given   to   this   mind  .        it   was   the   realization   she        didn’t   have   the   effort         &    the   lesson   that   she   shouldn’t   make   promises   she   couldn’t   keep  .

 glance   is   risked  ,   away   from   the   paper   ,   but   only   met   with    hair   above   a   laminated   selection   of   breakfast   items  .       a    barrier    between   them   does    nothing    in   disrupting   a    meeting   ,   though  .       calmly  ,   eyes   shift   back   to  the   paper   where   they   read   nothing  .      the    indistinct   roar    of   voice   is    traded    for   focus   on    one  .       THERE   IS   NO   HINT   OF   HOSTILITY  ,    NO   RESENTMENT  .        she    speaks    without   disrupting   the    silence    in   the   air  .                     (      ❛      you’ve   been   watching   me  .     ❜      )                      she    traces    along   thoughts   of   herself   in   her    sister’s    mind  .             isn’t   this   a   familiar   situation  ?

 a   faint   brush   against   her   awareness.   if   she   hadn’t   grown   up   with   it,   andi   likely   would   have   written   it   off   as   nothing.   but   she   can   feel   that   presence   making   its   way   deeper,   along   the   tendrils   of   memory.   instinct  cries   for   andi   to   retreat   and   shield   her   mind,   it   is   a   conscious   effort   to   keep   her   walls   lowered.   to   let   her   sister   in.   it   has   been   so   long   since   they’ve   connected   like   this.   she’d   forgotten   what   it   was   like   to   have   someone   see   inside.

 the   voice   has   a   haunting   quality   as   it   reaches   out.   a   stab   of   guilt.   yes   she’d   been   watching,   standing   a   silent   vigil,   never   seeking   one   uma   out.   truthfully   andi   had   been   afraid.   afraid   of   rejection.   of   possibly   disrupting   both   their   lives,   and   in   doing   so   bringing   danger   down   on   them.   for   all   that   she   could   see,   there   was   so   much   more   she   couldn’t.

 with   a   heavy   sigh   she   drops   the   pretence   of   perusing   the   menu,   setting   it   aside.   meeting   her   sister’s   gaze   is   harder.   it   takes   a   few   moments   for   her   eyes   to   lift   and   make   contact.   andi   tries   to   make   clear   how   sorry   she   is   without   words.   drawing   upon   memories   of   how   happy   she’d   been   when   her   vision   walking   had   stumbled   across   uma,   the   relief   that   she   was   alive.   pushing   through   feelings   had   always   been   easier   than   words.   (   ‘   i   have.   ‘   )   part   of   her   had   always   wondered   if   uma   had   maybe   left   a   trace   behind,   if   that   was   perhaps   why   andi   had   an   easier   time   finding   her.   (   ‘   the   others,   i   can’t   find   them.  ‘   )   another   wave   of   guilt.   andi   had   pushed   until   her   brain   had   felt   like   fire,   still   nothing.
