Love isnât supposed to hurt âŚ. right?
So I was recently going through the âgrowing up with strict parentsâ tag, and I figured out that itâs more like a âlol check all the ways my parents low-key emotionally and verbally abuse meâ tag. Iâm not complaining- I totally feel you. Anyway, your parent might be toxic if:
-you canât be on your phone without them taking it and reading through whatever you were doing -they frequently mention how much money it costs for your basic living expenses -they casually imply that theyâll take away that support when you disagree about ANYTHING -there are more arguments than conversations -pretty much everything turns into an explosion: chatting about a friend, asking about supper, mentioning something you did that day -(Itâs a nuke if you express any opinion) -you never ask for money. You either work or do without. Itâs not worth it. -You donât get privacy- they will barge in your room and bathroom at any time, and anything on your phone or in a journal is fair game -They happily pit your siblings against you/you against your siblings -they convince your other parent that youâre the one stirring up trouble (if youâre in high school) -they donât stop mentioning your grades- it doesnât matter if you have an A, itâs not enough -they constantly tell you that you arenât good enough to get into the college of your choice -they wonât shut up about how you wonât be able to support yourself when you move away -youâre told that youâre never going to leave the house, because they will not be giving you money for college -scholarships. You need to apply to all of them, all the time, and if you express the desire to do anything else for an hour or two, you receive the above. -you might have a car, but that doesnât mean you get to use it. -you constantly watch your friends make plans, but donât bother even asking because you accidentally burned breakfast and theyâre still mad -itâs obvious theyâre actively trying to manipulate you (see: you donât love me, you never talk to me, etc.) -You arenât going to miss them when you move out. -you know because moving out is all you think about.
-you hear the following: âI put you in this world, and I can take you out.â âYou have to respect me because Iâm the parent. I donât have to respect you.â â-No, shut up and listen.â (Interrupting you) âBring me your phone and iPad.â (Feeling that sense of dread) âI donât care. You arenât everyone else, youâre my child.â âI donât know why you wonât come out of your room and talk to us.â (After a 2 hour lecture on your terrible choice in friends) âNo, donât 'okayâ me!â âWe bust our asses to make sure you live comfortably and youâre just so ungrateful.â (After asking to get a haircut.) âTake those damn headphones out and talk.â âI donât think you even need a phone. I texted you five minutes ago and you didnât answer. Give it here.â âI donât know why you always want to go out instead of spending time with your family.â âI know you only act this way because you donât love me.â
Skills you shouldnât have to learn to survive yet child abuse forces you to:
moving around without making any noise
moving around the place without turning on the light
locking/unlocking doors in complete darkness
staying stoic in the face of screaming, threats, and violence
pretense of being calm even if in deep panic
perfect pretense of being fine even in the middle of breakdown
silent crying, crying without making any noise or even tears
doing physical work while crying or injured and not stopping
sensing when someone is angry or stressed because now theyâre a danger to you
comforting and calming people down in desperate attemt to lower the amount of danger youâre in
recognizing a person by their footsteps, or a car by the noise it makes when turning to a stop
turning all injustices and anger inwards and making it into self hatred
hiding scars and injuries
expertly making excuses for marks or scars on yourself
dissociating in a second if thereâs danger of new trauma
repressing mountains of trauma
surviving emotionally completely on your own
Friendly reminder that youâre under no obligation to love other people, whether theyâre your parents, siblings, other family members or anyone you know. Someoneâs love is something you earn through experiences and time, not because someone is âtitledâ under a label that theyâve put themselves. Youâre not forced to love anyone who you think doesnât deserve that love.

Iâm actually envious of people who can have a conversation with their parents and can open up to them about their feelings. Like howww? How nice must your parents be for you to do thattt? Teach me your ways.
