it was on your third date that matt proposed the arrangement.

your phone buzzes again and you look down.

giving you seconds to enter the foyer, he slams the front door shut behind you two. the sound makes you gasp, echoing through the entire first floor.

"matt, is that not what we agreed on?! that's so fucking unfair. we're not exclusive, we've said that since the start. i don't know why you're being like this all of a sudden." you're raising your voice now too in an attempt to match him.

"i know you're wearing the set i bought you last week...the black and red lace one. i saw it when i was zippin' you up earlier."

"and?" the ache in your chest tightens.

he's quiet for a beat, spinning his ring with his thumb.

"don't you think he should know who bought it for you?"

the heat in your veins turns cold at his words.

"why should i? he's not my boyfriend and you're not mine either. they're just clothes."

when you think he's going to explode again, he takes a deep breath, walking closer to you.

you let a mix of a scoff and a laugh at his ridiculous request. but when he doesn't say anything else you realize he's dead serious. begrudgingly, you kick off your heels and find the zipper of your dress. struggling, you finally get it down. it pools to your ankles and you sweep it to the side with the shoes. you can feel your heartbeat in your ears, which are tinged bright red. left in the place and red set, you've never been this exposed in front of him.

he eyes you, stopping your neck. "and the necklace."

you roll your eyes, taking off the diamond piece and tossing it to the couch beside you. "you're being mean." a little pout fills your features, eyes welling up.

he smiles to himself smugly. "no, sweetheart, if i was bein' mean i'd ask for the set back too."
