TASTES.

mom’s home cooking. molé. fresh cold brew coffee, taken black. the addicting sting of hot cheetos. full flavored american spirits. pan dulce on a sunday morning, bought before the after-church rush.

SMELLS.

cigarettes. lake michigan on a warm day. grass after it’s first cut of the year. coffee beans after you’ve pressed grind. dog breath, waking you up every morning. 

SIGHTS.

a mess of paper and canvas sprawled out in a studio. the bean, reflecting a dozen families taking selfies. hoards of fans at a meetup, eager to give gifts and take pictures. green grass and tall trees during the early summer months. pictures of a girl he can’t bear to throw away, shoved under a few books.

     The embrace lasts only a few seconds, but long enough to get a good taste of what he’s MISSED. Calloused hands wrap around her waist, pulling her in enough to make sure she stays for just a bit longer. His face nuzzles into the crook of her neck, a happy sigh emanating from him.

Every bit of his being rallied against that truth, but there were nights where he reached over to the left side of the bed, and grasped at nothing when her frame should be there. There are days where, even though the house isn’t quiet, it’s not filled with anything vaguely familiar. 

It’s been four years, almost five, since they mutually agreed to end their relationship.

That’s what they tell people, at least. That’s what the media knows.

It had been a particularly bad point. His grandmother’s death had devastated him, making life miserable for Cassie as well. He knew it. The only reason he ever came home at that point was to see James. She had no idea how to deal with him or his hot-and-cold personality. 

“You have to leave.” She hadn’t said hello, or asked about his day that evening, just told him something they both knew. James wasn’t there. Probably for the best. He packed up what he could, and went back to his mom’s house. There, at least he had a room to sit and wallow in his self-pity, and a place to paint in silence when he needed to.

When Wayne came along, he had lost it. The two exchanged fists once Cassie had admitted to seeing him while Teo and her were still together. He cried a lot that day. 

That was four years ago. Cassie and Wayne married not long after, and they had just recently had their first child. Cassie was a homemaker, something she had often stuck her tongue out at the mere mention of. She was happy, and was loved.
