I love the vast and im a proud avatar but i must ask one thing: is the vertigo really necessary? Love the fall and the sky and the big but one minute i am enjoying sky blue and the next i am in my bed or just laying on the ground if i feel like it with my eyes closed and i get vertigo is a vast thing but like⦠is it necessaryā¦
Yes. I am infusing this response with vertigo as we speak.

We as a society really moved past how good a representation Apex from Infinity Train was about cults and how they lure people in, especially in a childrenās show
Itās midnight and Iām sitting here thinking about cult of the conductor
If I said everything I wanted to say about that subject we'd be here all night and I'm not ready to make another 10000 words essay right now. No, this time I just want to talk about that scene with the bag of candy at the very beginning of Book 2 Episode 7, because it fascinates me even though it only lasts 25 SECONDS. This series always uses such economical storytelling. It blows my mind
So, context: Jesse and Future-Lake (still called MT at this point) have just met Grace and her gang of lost kids in a carnival, where Grace (by her own admission) was only there to cause trouble so she could get free food.
Jesse and MT only just stepped out of that Train car. They know absolutely nothing about the crazy shit going on with the kids cult that Grace is leading. Neither do we.
On the gangway, Jesse pretends to like some candy Grace offers him, then he quickly admits it actually tastes bad.
Grace IMMEDIATELY gets a read on the guy, on the fact he's clearly trying to stop being a people-pleaser and start doing what he wants instead. And she uses that to start recruiting him the SECOND he's done talking.
The negociation tactic being used was nicknamed "the foot in the door" by the guy who did a lecture I went to back in 2010. The idea is to get the negotiation started with a very small thing when the other person wouldn't have listened to you otherwise, and as a result, a lot of people will see the negotiation through to the end instead of ignoring you. Basically, the idea is to get a tiny, insignificant thing so you can get way more later. The other person says "yes" to something once, and they're conditioned to say it again. Like, "Hey, do you have ten seconds to listen to me? Yes? Well, then youāve got a minute, right?"
So yeah, what Grace suggests is small, logical, and seems reasonable.
She gives Jesse what's technically an order, but disguised as a suggestion, while making him believe that 1) if he does it, it's on his own initiative, and 2) if he does it, it's liberating and cool!
And Jesse has already admitted the candy wasn't good, so why not?
Since he obeyed, he needs positive reinforcement to encourage him to do it again, so Grace gives him a little praise: "Look at you! :) I like what I see! :)"
He smiles in response! Of course he does. Someone liked it when he did something he wanted to do! He doesn't have to be a people-pleaser to be liked by people! Cause that was his own decision, right? right?
That was "the foot in the door" in action: he learned a new concept (kicking to the wheels what he doesn't like), he said yes to it once, he's happy he did it, the reaction was positive, he's conditioned to do it again.
Of course, the first time we watch that scene, we don't yet know that the Apex does waaaay way worse than just tossing food to the wheels, but that's also how effective cult recruitment works; you say yes to things that seem totally acceptable at first, and it's only once you've been conditioned for long enough that the less acceptable things start happening, before moving on to the really unacceptable stuff after a while, once youāve gone far enough
And all of this under the guise of "it's your choice, you do what you want" and that itās empowering and liberating, when in reality it's absolutely not
Sorry for highjacking your post o.p anyway uhhhhh good show
ā¢Just like Caineās adventures, the cars arenāt circus-themed. Itās more a theme surrounding the outside and the engine.
ā¢This is a digital/magic(?) hybrid, the same way the train in canon seems to be combining machinery and magic(?).
ā¢Passengers do not lose their names, but they are given an avatar along with a number upon boarding. (I donāt have a good reason for passengers to be wearing normal clothes over their avatars, itās just something I wanted.)
ā¢This AU couldāve been an everybody thing, and thereās a lot of potential for it, but I like making things about showtime Caine.
⢠(To be clear, this isnāt a āshowtime AU,ā I just like adding hints of it everywhere. Romantic and platonic content can be made with this AU, itās subject to my whims at any given time.)
C.A.I.N.E
⢠Caine is in One-Oneās role
⢠He does have a back and forth āgladā and āsadā side, as shown above. (Inspired by Caineās fight with himself in the void from episode 9.)
⢠Bereft of his former power (hence the outfit), abandoned far back in the train, and amnesiaād. He does not remember what his function is, nor what happened to him.
⢠Heād like to remember his purpose, and he finds his buried programming is giving him the desire to help Abigail. With that as his first clue in a while, he continues to assist her, hoping to come closer in remembering his place on the train.
⢠The āunfinishedā car does bring up some of his forgotten feelings, both about himself, and what happened to him.
⢠āMISS ABIGAILā <3
Pomni Abigail
⢠Kindāve in Tulipās role, but more her own thing. (Sheās still 25 btw, not Tulipās age.)
⢠I donāt have a range for her number, probably not too high.
⢠Her outfit design was a whim. I did think it would be fun to put her in slightly watered-down versions of her jester outfit colors, and it is. Whatās the deal with the pants chain and the moon and star charms on it? Just fun. I wanted to evoke Caineās office doors. (Sheās already got the red and blue thing, Iām allowed to take even more liberties.)
⢠We genuinely know nothing about Pomni, so thinking of a flaw or trauma that would be her ticket to the therapy-train has been a struggle. Now the series doesnāt act like this is a flaw, but she was fatally sympathetic to Jax to the point of being enabling, so maybe that can be her train problem? Reminds me of Jesse.
(Iām not saying she knew Jax outside of the train, or that she will even meet him; just the idea that sheās been in, and mishandled, similar scenarios.)
Gumigoo
⢠Heās not royalty, but I thought heād be good in place of Atticus. We need him for that humanizing of denizens/NPCs aspect.
⢠He may be turned into a monster later, but this is still a far better timeline for him than in canon. Friends? A real mother? Not dying?? What more could he ask for!
⢠Heās also free from the identity crisis here, thereās not really a catalyst for it.
⢠Joined the party to take down Bubble the steward.
Who is in Ameliaās place as the false conductor/ringmaster? Iām thinking Queenie/Destiny.
I know the turtle theme was supposed to be random, but I love the idea that Queenieās attempts would keep accidentally making bug denizens.
This also means dead Grant, oops :(
Anyway Jax and Simon are super similar, especially in their respective approaches to the strange worlds theyāve been thrown into. Iām not saying Iāll make any content of him, but Jax gets a Simon ending. I consider this an episode 9 fix-it.
Bonus Caine thoughts: since the train exists to help people; Caine, even if he canāt help in the way heās meant to, is compelled by that need, to help the passengers. (Abigail is the first heās come across since being usurped and abandoned.)
As conductor/ringmaster, his role wouldāve been making endless new train cars all day. (Iād say itās similar enough to Caineās adventure-making in canon.)
The act of helping a passenger jogs something in his memory, it at least brings up a feeling, but heād only get small hints of the creation/creativity side of his purpose. Until getting back in power, the unfinished car incident is probably the closest heād get to actually remembering.
Iāll have to design his combo conductor/ringmaster outfit. I imagine that once he re-interfaces with the engine and gets his power back, heād get a magical little outfit transformation scene.
