language learning made easy
I’ve summarized professor Alexander Arguelles’ video, because I think this is crucial for language learning.Â
There is no magic trick that will help you become fluent in 1 month, but there are very effective approaches to learning a new language and if you combine them, you will surely become fluent.
If you’re learning a new language, the most important thing you need to consider is – what type of language learner are you?Â
1. If you:
have a more deductive approach, which means that you’re better at listening to and observing the language first and learning through that, rather than starting with plain grammar points from a textbook
have a fair degree of intuition
like to observe a phenomenon
feel somewhat comfortable with ambiguity for a while, until things become clear
are someone who can feel comfortable being corrected when they realize they were wrong, rather than getting confused and frustrated because they went down an initial path that turned out not to be correct (so you actually learn from being corrected and you don’t get confused by it)
then, these manuals are best suited for you: the Assimil Language Series, the Linguaphone Series, the Cortina Methods.
2. If you:
have a desire to have things explained to you beforehand in a nice and clear way
have a logical and analytical mind (which is usually the product of education in general)
have a need for a systematic approach (basically if you’re most comfortable with a book which is going to introduce the grammar according to an agreed set of methods or an organized plan)
then, you should try out some of these manuals: the Hugo Series, the Made Simple Series, the Teach Yourself Series, the Buske Series.Â
3. PAY ATTENTION TO PATTERNS!!!
the most important part are the patterns of a language
no matter what type of language learner you are, I think it’s really clever to incorporate this method into you learning.Â
a language is actually made up of patterns which constantly repeat themselves and that is THE KEY TO FLUENCY
repeating the patterns over and over again, until they become natural, until you no longer have to conjugate the verbs in your head before speaking
when you become really good with patterns, your sentences will come out naturally, and patterns are what will get you to fluency
I’ve provided the links, where you will find a review of the books, so that you can have an idea of what they look like. You can find most of these on amazon.
There is also an amazing blog on here, which provides free books, and I think that you can find half of these series for free there. Â @lovelybluepanda

13.03.2018; you might remember my pencilcase was stolen a couple of weeks ago, so i finally managed to rebuild a set of essentials! half of them arrived today in the mail, the rest are from local stores.
bic cristal fine, my all-time favourites. they are the smoothest pens in the world.
pencil and eraser.
pencil sharpener, also useful for makeup.
black gel pen. won’t recommend this one, it’s too thick.
small stapler, very useful for me.
two zebra mildliners. my first time using them, i only bought two single ones because i don’t need more and i like to stay minimal with my stationery, a pack was unnecessary.
ruler, it’s from aliexpress, not muji!
translucent pencil case, also from aliexpress! they have a bigger one and i think i’ll get it too, because it’s so cheap and i overestimated the things i could fit into this one.
sticky notes from aliexpress.
The failure of an assignment, relationship, or any other important goal can extremely disappointing, especially when you expected so much more for yourself. However, you cannot avoid failure unless you avoid doing anything at all. So instead of beating yourself up, there are ways for you to regain motivation and get back up on your feet after getting knocked down.
Accept what you’re feeling. I’m not saying that you should stay in bed, wallowing in self-pity for days. But you should take a moment and be angry or sad or whatever you feel after a loss. This will enable you to work through your feelings without lashing out on others or letting it distract you later.Â
Remember that a few setbacks do NOT make you a failure. Everyone fails, okay? Do you know how many times J.K Rowling sent Harry Potter to publishers before getting published? 12 times. She failed 12 times before publishing what became one of the best novel series of all time. So instead of going into a self-hating spiral, remind yourself that just because you failed doesn’t mean that you won’t succeed the next time. See this failure as something temporary that will pass instead of a permanent roadblock
Address the cause of the failure. Ask yourself these questions: What caused this? Could it have been prevented? What can I do in the future to succeed? Were my initial expectations unrealistic? Take the time to think or write down about could have been done and what their consequences would have been.
Learn from this situation. Now, apply the behaviors you wrote down in the previous step. You want to get an A on your next test? Study smarter, take better notes, ask your teacher questions or even read this post I wrote. You want to get first place at your next swim meets? Practice, improve your diet, train outside of the pool. Whatever your goal is, implement ways in your weekly routine to achieve it.
Understand that some of your goals may be unrealistic. It’s important to work hard to attain your goals, but it’s also important to realize if your goal was too difficult to achieve. You can’t possibly get 100% on every single one of your tests or win every competition you enter. Knowing that there are some things that you may not achieve at the moment will prevent you from being disappointed.
A lot of stuff has changed for me over the past few months

5.5.17 // 7:05pm // guide to exam season
hello hello! i know i’ve been a little absent the past few days, but i had my last exam yesterday and now i’m finally home. i asked for advice/masterpost topic suggestions, so without further ado, here is my guide to exam season! (as requested by @rivkahstudies)
whether it’s high school finals, college finals or ap/ib exams, i’m sure we all know how it feels to have to learn (seemingly) all the knowledge ever known in a few weeks. here’s how to come out relatively unscathed:
1. pretty notes are nice, but they also take forever. i’m a huge fan of making summaries and study guides so, to spice up my notes efficiently, i pick two colored pens that I alternate between for each section/topic.Â
2. on a similar vein, don’t use a billion different colors/pens/highlighters. it takes time to switch between pens or to pick up a highlighter. and to figure out what color the term/fact should be classified as. underlining and writing in all caps is just as effective to provide emphasis on something. and way faster.
3. study guides are your friend. like i said earlier, this is one of my favorite way to study for big cumulative exams. go through your notes (or the textbook) and summarize, but make sure you understand what you write down. write things in a way that makes sense to you (don’t just copy). going back over lecture notes is great because it forces you to put pieces together, calls things you didn’t get to your attention, and allows you to skip over concepts you are already very solid in.
4. learn from practice problems. if your teacher/professor give past exams or practice problems, use them. i like to go through them and, if i don’t know how to do something and wasn’t just being dumb, i take notes on key concepts/strategies used to solve the problem. this way, it’s on my radar and i can apply those strategies to other problems. if you really don’t have time (or are lazy like me), go through the solutions and take notes on any solution that you wouldn’t have immediately thought of. not quite as effective as actually doing them first, but it still helps.
5. memorize strategically. this one is really great for vocab or classes like ap spanish lit where you need to know facts about lots of different works. start by memorizing the “easy” ones that stand out. maybe you have a personal connection, or it’s the only work in that style or time period. i find starting there and working towards the more “difficult” works builds confidence and helps you be really sure of the ones you do know. if you get down to the end and there are two works you always get confused, at least you’ve narrowed down the list by having everything else locked in.
6. breathe. one of the worst things you can do is let yourself get overwhelmed (either while studying or while test-taking). don’t let yourself get to that point. if you need to take a step back, do it. pushing yourself too far can lead to a complete shut down, which will put you out of commission for (possibly) days and only fuel your sense of helplessness. exams are important, but they’re not so important that you need to sacrifice your well being.
best of luck with all your exams and please feel free to message me/send me an ask if you want more advice. i love giving it :D -m
