20 important study skills/tips iāve learned from my professors
1. start studying a week before every quiz/test. seriously.
2. watch youtube videos/ted talks on the topics you are learning about.
3. get lots of sleep! sleep helps you process the dayās events, including what you learned.
4. write out your notes. itās proven that handwritten notes help you learn better than typed out notes.
5. donāt just read what your professor gives you. find academic journals, books, etc. that correspond with your subjects.
6. read the news! especially in the social sciences/humanities, connecting concepts with current events helps you understand and process more easily.
7. exercise! this doesnāt have to be going on runs or lifting weights, it could even just be going for a 20 minute walk. just get your blood pumping, itāll help you focus.
8. study at your desk. it may be tempting to study in bed, but your brain connects your bed with sleep, so youāll get tired more quickly.
9. reviewing notes doesnāt have to be something you sit down and do for an hour. skim through them and test your memory while eating breakfast!
10. expand your study time throughout the day to avoid burnout. for example, rather than studying for 5 hours straight, study for an hour here and there in between your activities.
11. make your notes organized and easy to read, but not distracting. bright colors and flashy notes may seem better, but can sometimes distract from the purpose of the notes.
12. use apps such as quizlet. this way, you can go through definitions while waiting in lines or walking to class.
13. itās more important to know concepts rather than facts. for example, you should be able to take what you know and apply it to different situations, not just the situation the textbook gives you.
14. just because the professor doesnāt require you to readĀ textbook, doesnāt mean you shouldnāt. it helps explain concepts in a different way than your professor, and a lot of times hearing two different explanations for the same concept helps you understand it.
15. read in advance. read the textbook before your professor begins going over the chapter, so when he/she does, you can easily follow what they are saying.
16. do any extra credit work that comes your way. even if you donāt need the extra boost now, you might later.
17. go to class!! if you always skip class and show up at office hours completely lost on the concepts, theyāll laugh in your face. theyāll take you 100x more seriously if you show up.
18. however, if you are sick, take a day off. itās more beneficial to you in the long run.Ā
19. learn how to sayĀ ānoā. if you have an 8 am the next day, donāt stay out until midnight with your friends.Ā
20. donāt stress too hard over quizzes. if you expect them to go horribly, they will. you got this.
Iāve been very stressed lately, so Iām happy to finally have some quiet time. Iām going to rewrite few pages and then probably just watch tv shows š (btw itās snowing! what a nice winter there is this fall)
hello yāall!! i got foot surgery this week and so i havenāt been at school at all (rip me after spring break)
anyway here is a bujo spread dedicated to actual queen of my heart inej ghafa (fave soc character; itās not even a competition). i always associate her with green and grey (ironically my high schoolās colors ha) green because she grows a lot in the course of the duology and grey because of her alter ego as āthe wraithā and all the ghostly-ness that implies. but i probably think too much about inej tbh.
oh by the way, this is a leuchtturm1917 journal in A5 black hardcover, and i believe the tombow colors used were sea green (346) and warm grey 1 (N89)
If your teacher explains 1000 topics in one hour, is always complaining about how little time thereās to teach his subject and you end up with pages and pages of notes, Iāve got some tips for you.
Here is what I do when I have the slides/presentation before hand. All you need is Microsoft One Note.
Before class.
I donāt do much, since Iām too busy with other things
Download the presentation (in .pdf)
On One Note:Ā Insert > File Printout, this will insert a picture of your slides.
During class.
One Note letās you write basically everywhere
Type what the professor is saying thatās not on the slides.
Draw: I LOVE THIS, and itās the main reason I use this software
I use the highliter to highit what the professor said thatās already written on the presentation.
Use any other pen as you would in real life (it works perfectly fine with your mouse, thatās what I do)
Whenever the professor draws on the board, do it too! This is specially helpful in biology or chemistry classes
After class.
I usually summarize my notes by hand (but retyping them works good too)
Make sure you understand every concept
I write down questions or things I donāt understand, to ask my friends or professor
Wow, Iāve been using OneNote for a while now, and I had no idea of that Insert > File Printout function. That is so useful, thank you so much!Ā
You're welcome! That's totally a lifesaver for me, I use that for every class.

good morning!!! midterms are coming and colorful immunology diagrams are the only thing keeping me motivated !!!
Hi Julia! I might have a weird question for you, but I'm a senior in Marine Biology and planning to graduate in December this year. I do volunteer in my professors lab, which researches fish sensory systems & fish development, but the more I look into grad school, the more I'm interested in studying Plant Biology or Bioinformatics. I was wondering if you had any advice, or pros/cons on changing your field of study in your masters from your undergrad? Thank you!!
Hi Anon!
Thatās totally ok, since theyāre both in the field of Biology! Your academics and research background are still applicable.Ā
However, I would recommend gaining some research experience in Plant Bio or Bioinformatics more so for your own benefit so you can see how you like being in those areas. Something that might look great on paper may not be right in person, and vice versa.Ā
I did something kinda similar: my undergrad degree was in Microbiology, and then I switched to Cancer Biology for grad school after working a few years in a cancer research lab. So the switcharoo is totally ok and doable! But getting a feel for it before fully committing is always a good idea.Ā
Changing is more than ok, as long as you like what you're studying :)
I'm also considering studying bioinformatics next year! But I'm not quite sure yet
