«Lights»

About the process. There's one thing I noticed about Glitter's challenges – they help me grow as a photographer. I'm not even a professional – just a lover of beautiful pictures as well as someone who tries to take them this way. The topics Glitter chooses for her challenges are simple but at the same time they're not that easy to depict, at least not for me. You have to really think about them in order to make your piece of work relevant but also beautiful and creative.

The topic for this month is «lights» and this isn't something I could miss. Photography that involves lights is mesmerizing and always makes my heart skip a beat. So I decided to try my hand at capturing lights.

I never worked with lights before so this project of mine is the first one involving them. As for my vision, I knew it would be connected to the holidays anyway. In my work this time, I ended up depicting grandiosity of lights combined with delicacy of a small Christmas tree ball. Light almost always means grandiosity to me. It resembles openness and pride as well as the ability to shine in both literal and figurative way.

Now, let's talk about the picture. When i say that this challenge was actually challenging, I mean it wholeheartedly. Glitter really got me there as it took me around 2 days to just approximately come up with what i want to portray at all to express the idea of cosiness. And like with most of my works, the idea was born out of the blue. I literally built the setup without even having the image of it in my head in advance - each item seemed to come to my hands by itself as i later placed them together to eventually create what is in front of you on the screen right now. I made tea specifically for the picture. The leaves and butterfly on the picture are real - i collect such things so that's where they come from. The idea of cosiness in my case also has autumn vibe and i think we're here for it.

❗️The butterfly wasn't harmed in the process. It's a dry butterfly from my collection. Years ago, it was found already dead in this exact position. I did not hurt the animal for the picture❗️

I went for a walk on July 10, 2023. As I was walking barefoot in the river, I noticed something shining in the water – at first I thought there were just waves reflecting the sun. But actually there were two little stones of incredible beauty. When exposed to the sun, they sparkle and show wonderful colours. The first stone is square (in the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th picture). One side of it is golden, another one contains blue, yellow and orange colours, and the rest of the sides contain black and deep blue colours. The second stone is similar to a rectangle (2nd and 6th picture). It's fully deep blue. Both stones now live on my shelf. They have my heart. Also, on the 5th picture you can notice some tiny waterdrops on the stone – it started raining when I was taking that photo.

It's always breathtaking for me to see the combination of snow and evergreen plants during the winter, or a combination of snow and random green leaves that somehow stay on bushes till December. There's just something extremely magical about it. For me, it's like a meeting of the two elements – one is warm and welcoming, the other is cold and reserved, but somehow they both make each other gentle.

CONTENT WARNING AND SPOILER ALERT FOR THE FOLLOWING CAPTION

For those who have seen the film and might be thinking: «How could you make an edit based on the film which, contrary to the song you chose, doesn't even have love as its main topic», – I know and understand what the film is about and my intention isn't to show some kind of love or to change the main focus of the film. I chose that song and pictures because I wanted to show how much the nurse and the work she does mean for Joe. Being deprived of everything else in life, thanks to her he can at least experience some kind of happiness as he's able to communicate, feel her gentle touching, Joe's not all alone anymore even though no one besides this nurse really cares about him. With my edits I intended to show that no matter how hopeless Joe's situation is, he's got that beam of light in the darkness – a person who's genuine and kind to him, who helps and understands him despite everything.
