Someone has probably already written about Bucky’s serial number, but just in case they haven’t, I thought other Captain America geeks would find this information interesting!
As I was doing research about WWII dog tags, I discovered that there’s some very important information in the first two digits of an Army serial number:
If the first character is “3″ then the person was drafted.
The second number indicates where the person was enlisted or drafted. For Delaware, New Jersey, and New York, that number is “2.”
Which means that someone working on The First Avenger did their research when they decided to make Bucky’s serial number 32557038. (The last three digits are from the comic adaptation of TFA.)
So, according to this information, Bucky was indeed drafted.
There is some conflicting evidence, of course. The Bucky Barnes memorial at the Captain America Smithsonian exhibit states that he enlisted.
…but considering that the exhibit is full of propaganda, and that this memorial contradicts itself with information as basic as Bucky’s birth year (and misspells “deprivation”), I tend to think it’s less accurate than his serial number.
This is almost certainly a continuity error, but if we’re going to take our unreliable canon and run with it, why not have fun?
And by fun I mean: let’s suffer together as we consider the tragedy that is Bucky Barnes being drafted. He didn’t volunteer to go to war, and that’s just the first of a thousand choices that were stripped away from him.
