Without courage, compassion falters, and without compassion, courage has no direction.

"Jo Negociata - Vetëvendosje!"
By David Deijmann
In the tumultuous political arena of Kosovo’s young democracy, there is one cry to be heard everywhere, “Jo Negociata –Vetëvendosje!”. It is the slogan of the most popular political movement in Kosovo called Vetëvendosje, meaning self-determination. This very active opposition movement is directed by a former student leader and charismatic Kosovar Albin Kurti. He worked for the politician, Adem Dimançi, in the early days of the Kosovo war before he was arrested by the Serbs. Kurti spent two years in a Serbian prison.
The movement, which started in 2004 refuses to be called either left- or right-wing claiming their principles cannot be reduced to those labels. In 2010, the Vetëvendosje initiated political action by participating in the elections at the end of that year. They obtained around 12 percent of the votes. Vetëvendosje’s main message “Jo Negociata – Vetëvendosje” means no negociations - self-determination. It aims at three issues: the corruption of the government and their failure in successfully building the new nation, the fight against organized crime and the influence of foreign organizations and governments in the Republic of Kosovo. In the last couple of years they have become strong proponents of uniting Albanians, implicating the union of Kosovo and Albania.
Vetëvendosje, popular with the young people of Kosovo, functions as Prime Minister Thaçi’s main opponent. Their fierce resistance visibly reflects in their political art, mainly graffiti, and immense non-violent demonstrations every now and then. It is this visible and active resistance against those things that Kosovars hate the most makes Vetëvendosje so popular. Although very popular, there is a large group of people that may agree with Vetëvendosje’s main points, but find them too aggressive and populist. They wish for a more moderate path of the movement. In a Kosovo where many lost their faith in the government and the sustainability of the Republic of Kosovo, Vetëvendosje holds a hopeful promise for the future of self-determing Albanians.
If you do exactly the same thing time and time again you'll get the same results, sometimes you need to push the envelope
