Just about everyone likes to feel pretty sometimes, even this South American caiman and its impressively sassy side-eye. Photographer Mark Cowan, traveling the Amazon studying reptile and amphibian diversity, spotted this pretty caiman on the riverbank whose head was covered in lovely butterflies.

“The phenomenon itself isn’t particularly unusual, salt is critical to the survival of many creatures like butterflies and bees who sometimes drink tears from reptiles in regions where the mineral is scarce (we’ve seen the same thing happen with turtles). What made this sight so unusual was seeing the butterflies organize themselves into three different species groups atop the caiman’s head.”

Dazzling Display Of Genetic Phenomenon Of Butterflies With Male And Female Wings

There’s no scarcity of genetic anomalies that are constantly investigated by hordes of scientists, whether they be human, animal or plant related. One such natural phenomenon is called bilateral gynandromorphism which occurs in living organisms. This visually incredible condition affects animals and insects where both male and female characteristics are prominent - split down the middle of the anatomy evenly. We’ve displayed the best of this strange wonder with these striking images of butterflies with bilateral gynandromorphism, with unidentical yet amazingly beautiful wings.

Here is a photoset of the Ornate Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), the light of the world and an inspiration to us all.
