11.22.20 ♡ 95/100 days of productivity Haven’t been here in a while and now finals szn is here! Can’t believe first semester of pharmacy school is almost over even though I’ve been looking forward to this ever since school started lol. We still have winter classes though so technically we don’t really end til a month later. Pharmacy school has been exhausting and I can’t wait to relax for one (1) day before classes start again. Good luck with everyone’s finals! 🍀

On the Filipino vs filipinix post you reblogged, I was wondering-doesnt the word come from Philippines which comes from Philip ii of spain so doesn't the word following western gender norms make sense? Like honestly I'd only heard of Filipino or Filipina and I'm genuinely confused. Especially because from what I remember of Spanish class it was less "o" is masculine than "a" is feminine and femininity specifically gets a notation, since neutral words are also given "masculine" markup.
That’s because it is gendered. Because “Filipina” is an actual Filipino term that is specific towards females from the Philippines.
However, I reblogged it because it pointed out that “Filipino” is already gender-neutral. Which is true in a social context. Its actual definition is, “a person of Philippine descent.” Or “the national language of the Philippines” if people don’t understand what Tagalog is.
You don’t really see “Filipina” being used unless you’re refering to only Filipino women. From personal experience, most people just use “Filipino” as a general term to refer to a person from the Philippines. Of course, every Filipino has different experiences and maybe it’s where I grew up and where I live, but it’s just??? not a thing?? The most I’ve seen the word used is the “Dalagang Pilipina” meme. Or when women want to emphasize their female identity along with their Philippine one (which is cool; I get it, being lumped with boys is annoying).
The best I can explain it, is when people use it like “bro” or “dude”. It’s literal definition is geared towards males but it’s so normalized that people usually use it for any gender. (Slang and national identity aren’t the same thing, obviously, but the way they’re used when referring to people of different genders is common).
Additionally, Tagalog is already a gender-neutral language; meaning it’s kind of a default for most people to think that “Filipino” also follows that same stream. And I know this is how many Filipinos outside of North America think as well. (Mostly because this is kind of born from American rhetoric where genderqueer POC like Latinx want to create an identity for themselves, which, hey, is fucking valid.)
But, I do understand why “Filipinx” is a term Filipino people have started using recently. It’s an obvious gender-neutral term that shares roots with words such as Latinx. And for Filipinx who identify as genderqueer, it’s probably empowering to have a term to use where the literal definition isn’t “Philippine male.” Also, I did do some research while writing this and “Filipinx” was created as a part of Filipinx diasporia in mainly America for genderqueer Filipinx and other Filipinxs who actually feel the effects of that diaspora.
Considering the normality of using the word “Filipino” as a gender-neutral term, I do think “Filipinx” can be a bit redundant in some cases. Especially since I am neither from America nor genderqueer nor feel dysporia over my identity. And, that’s fine for me. The post I reblogged resonated with me because I am privileged enough to not feel dysphoric about my identity as a Filipino. However, I’m not so blind that I’m going to purposefully mix up those terms for people who don’t have that privilege. I don’t fully understand it (and possibly never will), but identity is something people have to decide for themselves. I’m Filipino and will continue to refer to myself as such despite being a girl.
That being said, I do want to be inclusive as possible. If people do want to be referred to as “Filipinx”, I will use that term (bc I’m not an asshole), and I will be using it in tags to make sure everyone is accomodated for.
Feel free to contradict me btw. I’m not an expert and this is solely my opinion based on my personal experiences.
My thoughts on overseas Filipinos' use of 'Filipinx' when referring to Filipinos...
The Filipino language has a lot of loan words from spanish. But not every noun that has an 'o' or 'a' is a gendered spanish loan word. 'Filipino' is not a gendered spanish loan word. It is our word that follows tagalog rules. And tagalog, if ya'll bothered to actually learn about the language of your country, is generally gender neutral.
The other foreign term "Filo" is more acceptable as it's clearly just slang, like 'pinoy' and its proponents don't act like the 'o' was gendered. Filipina is informal and does not change the fact that Filipino is gender neutral. While 'Filipinx' comes across as invalidating the native way of expressing gender neutrality in favor of the western way.
Filipinos already have the imperialistic mindset that foreign stuff/culture/etc is better than our own. Preferring 'filipinx' over filipino to refer to filipinos as a whole reinforces that imperialistic mentality. filipinx, to me, will never refer to filipinos as a whole. Use it for yourself if you want. But don't impose that label on all filipinos.
I understand the necessity of gender neutral alternatives to gendered words. But please. Learn whether or not the words are actually gendered to begin with. Don't just look at our language through a spanish lens.
okay, i've had enough. as somebody who's still figuring out their gender i cannot tell you how happy i am that my language was already made to be gender neutral. the filipino language is beautiful and here are some examples from english to filipino:
'he/she' into 'siya'
'boyfriend/girlfriend' into 'jowa'
'husband/wife' into 'asawa'
'brother/sister' into 'kapatid'
see? once translated into filipino the gendered terms in english are already understood as gender neutral in the first place. so why on earth would you use filipinx instead of simply using filipino, or even pinoy?
yes, while it is true that 'filipina' and 'pinay' can also be used to refer to girls, it's still, in the end, optional. you can still use filipino or pinoy to refer to girls because again, it is gender neutral. turning to calling it filipinx is erasing our culture. the letter 'x' doesn't even exist in our alphabet.
i honestly can't grasp that the common argument in defense of this is to be inclusive. please, as a filipino, as someone who is still confused by their own gender, just stop. stop it. stop forcing our language, our culture, to adapt accordingly to westernized standards. i am so, so sick of it. white people are already so idolized around asian countries, in our country. we've been colonized time and time again for centuries. so much of our culture has already been erased. we try so hard to be 'included' across the world that we start to exclude ourselves from our own roots. stop treating our own race as something soooo cute and quirky only when it's trendy. respect our culture, love your own country, please. i am so so tired. our language, our culture, is beautiful. and i am proud to call myself a filipino.
and you should be too.
Dark Academia Books for Students of Politics and International Relations:
I mean, heck, I am no expert but my need to see this niche ass post is a lot so here goes.
The Prince: Machiavelli- do I NEED to explain this one. Its a seminal text in politics and political philosophy and when you listen to the ideas described in it they can sound a little crazy but once you read it you realise they are still crazy but grounded in something very real. Also its short as heck and an easy read.
Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace- Hans J Morgenthau. I had to pick this one up for my coursework last semester and I thought it would be a snooze fest but no. I was drawn in and I haven’t finished it since but I do plan to get back to it at my leisure.
The End of History and the Last Man: Francis Fukuyama- YES, I fundamentally disagree with Fukuyama on so many points. YES, it is still one of my favourite books of all time. it is a very riveting discussion of political philosophy, history and international relations. If you are interested in any of those topics, pick it up. You won’t regret it.
How Democracy Ends: David Runciman- captivatingly written, great arguments, and a very unique voice. Super relevant in today’s international political atmosphere and if you are interested in studying the rise of right wing authoritarian governments across the globe, this is a great place to start.
Thomas Hobbes: Leviathan- another one that I just feel like i don’t need to explain. Again haven’t read it fully yet, but its quite chill inducing and the basis for most of the contemporary discussion on state, liberalism, authoritarianism, rights and so forth.
These were just my recommendations, and I by no means claim that they cover the entire gamut of the field. In fact, I would consider myself a noob still where texts relating to politics or IR are concerned, so feel free to give your recommendations and opinions as well!
