imagine the peer pressure to achieve, accomplish, leave your mark on history (and don’t get me started on heritage in the form of children, as mentioned in the game). that’s why the expeditions are seen by some people as “losing a year that could better be spent in peace with your close ones”

there’s also that people of Lumière kinda got used to death. they usually view it as expected, inevitable, something to mentally prepare oneself for, and it’s the unexpected death that hurts the most (see Sciel and Pierre). death has become such a normal part of life for them. I know there are cultures and individuals in our world that celebrate and or accept death, hell, that’s what some religions help with, but here the-exact-number-of-years-to-live-for factor adds an interesting flavour to all this, doesn’t it

and there is the Gommage. the yearly ceremony. the event to gather around. the collective loss and pain that unites those who come after. Lumière is festive, there are flowers everywhere. (I had some war parallels in my head but they escaped me)
