When it comes to Haitian Vodou, most sources written in English contain misinformation - with the exception of research stored and based the University of Florida. It is also important not to conflate African American Hoodoo with Haitian Vodou, as they are both deserving of respect but are distinct from each other. The same applies to Louisiana Voudou and West African Vodun.

You might have (correctly!) inferred this, but sections of this were drawn or written while I was in a semi-feverish state. Suffering from an intense illness can cause a person to reflect deeply on the inevitability of Death... Shortly before creating it, I rewatched the Korean film ě§ęľŹëĽź ě§ěźëź! (Save the Green Planet!). If you watched Bugonia, that is actually a remake of this cult classic. No one does crazy like Koreans, baby! The narrator character (who speaks in ALL CAPS) was somewhat inspired by Shin Ha-kyunâs performance as Lee Byeong-gu, and the protagonist of Stone Butch Blues. It is inspired by real life events, while remaining a fictional character.

You must be careful about the things you share on the internet! The narrator character is basically a mental asylum patient, who is complex and multi-layered. Many things about the personality of this character are meant to be dissected and analyzed. I put thought into as many details as I could. For example, the decision to have the narrator speak so frequently in English is also purposeful. In the diaspora, some of the elders have so many bad memories about Korea that they donât like to speak the language and even speak badly about it⌠And so, the narrator lives out an abominable existence, a life of desperate misery. This culminates in the declaration: âë¸ ě ë ë°âě 댏 ë§´!âÂ

Of course, it is Jeju that actually has more in common with Haiti⌠I had been planning to introduce some other characters aside from the narrator, but it didnât pan out. The story ends on a melancholy note, with the protagonist regressing moments before the end. I decided to leave it that way, for it is often true that life is two steps forward, one step back.Â
I must stress that this work of fiction is not intended as an accurate depiction of Haitian Vodou, or musok for that matter. In both cases, the information disseminated in English is often very inaccurate. If you want to find accurate information, you must go to the source! Haitian Vodou is a very sophisticated religion that has been grossly misrepresented in American media. My internet presence is largely an excuse to draw attention to the cultural connections between Haiti and Korea. Genuinely, a fascinating subject...  If this wasnât a bizarre art project I posted to DeviantArt, I would have handled things very differently. For me, art is mental illness⌠It is a compulsive activity, and a vehicle I use to communicate with my subconscious. I often find that it is more efficient for me to express complex ideas through crappy artwork instead of language. What you get from this is the raw artistic expression of an individual, in all its flaws and honesty. I embraced my role as the psychotic clownâKick me out of every house so I can say what no one else is allowed to say!! âŚBut it is time I drop the act. Sooner or later, I am probably going to delete sections of this. Probably not the entire thing, though, since there are a couple of items that I likeâŚÂ Â
While in a semi-feverish state, I write a couple of posts in my crappy Kreyòl... These are almost certainly going to get edited. Really is inappropriate to have published, but my workflow is to post things and then edit them later. I try to make this point âJezi pa blanâ but itâs a waste of time because there are Haitians who articulate that much better. Unedited, the posts also contain a profoundly contradictory message... I am concerned that it could be misinterpreted as an attack on Aristide/Lavalas. That was definitely not the intent. Reasonable people can differ in their opinions on Lavalas. What I object to is (1) people trying to simplify a situation as complicated as the one in Haiti (2) extremists in America taking advantage of diasporic Haitians. I've observed said extremists trying to recruit Haitians. Most Haitians are really good at seeing through BS, but sometimes people fall for the manipulation... Once you investigate these groups, it becomes obvious that they couldn't care less about what happens to Haiti. I don't believe in pushing any ideology (political or not) onto the Haitian community. Sometimes people try to help, but it is either unhelpful or anti-helpful. There are things that can be done to help, but you have to be really strategic and smart about it. They don't need a bunch of bumbling idiots, but people who can pair useful skillsets with a strong brain and moral backbone
It is also true that you should be distrusting of North Koreans⌠I wonât lie. The Korean tiger didnât go extinct, heâs just the North Korean. Look away for one second and heâll bite off your head! Iâm just a mix, so imagine what a full-blooded North Korean is like. But too many people have forgotten the wisdom of Dr. King⌠Judge a person not by skin color, race or nationality, but by the content of their character. Well said!
Elements of Haitian Vodou appear in my art â especially Legba â but I was never involved in Haitian Vodou. It became a research interest of mine because of its similarities to the indigenous religion of Korea. Legba as he appears in my art is only partially inspired by Haitian Vodou, as I am enamored with the artwork and music that is dedicated to Papa Legba. The clearer source of inspiration is Legba as he appears in West African VodĂşn â âgolden child of the Sun and Moonâ. He is the Fon counterpart to Esu-Elegbara. I bet a lot of Japanese would really like Legba⌠Some Koreans like him too, because of his resemblance to Dol Hareubang.Â
Something similar happened to Papa Legba and ę°ëŚźëë š (Korean grim reaper)... To Christians, both are considered evil demons. We see this reflected in pop culture depictions, where both become totally unrecognizable. In Benin, I noticed that Legba is sometimes portrayed with horns, but Iâm not sure if that is how he is supposed to look. I wonder if it is due to Christian influence⌠In other depictions, Legba bears a striking resemblance to Dol Hareubang.
The âDeath Godâ ë머ě is not inspired by Bawon Samdi or even Gede Nibo, but one of the minor Gede spirits who is described as androgynous (androjin). Of all the fanmi in Vodou, Fanmi Gede is probably the largest of them all. Brav Gede Nibo, Gede Loray, Gede Lensou, Gede Nouvavou, Gede Drivay, Gede Pikan, Gede Rounsou Mazaka⌠There are also many Bawon, and of course Grann Brijit. (In contrast to what some say, she is an old Black lady, not a white lady) The one similarity to Gede Nibo is from the lyrics of the song âPapa Gede Bèl Gasonâ... Naika has such a beautiful voice, I couldnât help myself! Beyond that, the similarities to Gede Nibo are mostly superficial, like the similarities between a caterpillar and a serpent. If you look closely, you will notice key iconography associated with Papa Gede is missing, especially his glasses. Instead ë머ě is characterized by an androgynous hairstyle, as described in Mami Wata: Africaâs Ancient God/dess Unveiled. In English there is a lot of bad information about Haitian Vodou. Rit Gede is not associated with homosexuality or lesbianism, but Ăzili Dantò is. The emphasis on androgyny is actually a Korean thing, since ę´ě¸ěëł´ě´ is androgynous. The combination of masculine and feminine energies is key to the symbolism of ë머ě , the gynandrous god.Â
 ë머ě is a composite character, created by throwing Korean and Haitian culture into a blender. Add a bit of Indian culture too! He is also called ěŹěë because that is his role â âangel (messenger) of deathâ. He can appear as a Destroyer, a Protector, or something like a ëꚨëš. He delivers messages, which are often very ominousâŚIn terms of complexion, he and his wife are as black as they come⌠Black as Sri Nirrti or Kali. This is because of color symbolism. Although he is âbèl nwa nètâ a combination of black and white is always present. Even when heâs dressed in all black, his ëě is white. When heâs dressed in all white, his appearance is blinding. Like he is standing in bright light. Light reflects off his skin, which glows with health, and his clothes are very clean. In this state, he is quite the opposite of ominous. Espwa⌠íŹë§âŚ The symbol of Hope. His minor association with the color purple is not truly purple, but the combination of red and blue, as arranged in íꡚ. Male on top, female on bottom⌠Masculine above clothes, feminine underneath clothes. There is a lot more I could write about ë머ě , and I will, if I find the time⌠As the original r/Biblefolker Celsus put it (citing Herodotus and Hercleitus), "things made with human hands cannot be regarded as gods...those who worship images as gods are as foolish as men who talk to the walls."
(for what itâs worth, I think Celsus makes several good points but I donât completely agree with him⌠his arguments are strikingly modern, but he straight-up slanders Christianity and repeats himself a lot)
Some transwomen or feminine males insist that they are at âthe bottomâ of the gender hierarchy. Those people can only see down the length of their own nose⌠Outside of the Developed World, the worst thing to be is often âthe fourth genderâ, due to being both female and a gender-invert. As put so eloquently in the Epstein files, âthe worst of both worldsâ... The faâatane fare worse than the faâafafine, as the hwame fared worse than the alyha. In Zimbabwe too, Black lesbians were said to have it even worse than Black homosexuals; in other places, Black homosexuals have it worse. The question of who is at âthe bottomâ is a function of culture and class, which is why it is important not to speak in absolutes. Haitian Vodou is utterly terrifying to most Koreans, but the reason depends on religious belief. Most Christians view it the same way they view musok â evil and demonic. In contrast, the indigenous perspective is highly sympathetic. Asian and African cultures are really different from each other, but you will find that a surprising number of things in Haitian Vodou have a counterpart in Korean indigenous belief. In Korea, there are over 10,000 ě , and the same is true of Haitian lwa. Haitian Vodou organizes spiritual energies into rit and fanmi. Rada, Petwo, Nago, Kongo, Makaya, Gede, Makaya, Danwonmen, Bizango, Boumba⌠That is just a small sample of the many rit, which are named after African ethnic groups, towns, kings, etc. All of this complexity is compressed down to âââVoodooâââ. It speaks to the lack of respect shown to African cultures. Similarly, a movement had to take place in Korea in order to recognize musok (or mugyo) as a proper religion.
In America, Gede is the most visible lwa, but the ones that Haitians seem to bring up most often in conversation are probably Ogou and Ăzili. Of course, I am a white person, so maybe it is different in conversations between Haitians... I am struck by how Ăzili Freda is almost completely invisible in American media. Musok is syncretic, and the two lwa I could easily see getting incorporated into worship are Ăzili Freda and Ăzili Dantò. Ogou and Ăzili Freda correspond very closely with traditional Korean masculine and feminine ideals, and Ăzili Dantò symbolizes ěŹí. I also think she would symbolize interracial sorority⌠If you see past the stupid racist stereotypes, a lot of Black women are Ăzili Freda, and a lot of Korean women are Ăzili DantòâŚÂ Ăzili Dantò even has a relationship with Anayiz that is a bit like the relationship between ěëąí ë§ and ěëąě미. Koreans would also like Grann Ăzili and Papa Loko a lot too. There is a strange alternate timeline of world history where Vodou is one of the most popular religions in KoreaâŚÂ
 In America, so many of the lwa are completely invisible. The iconography of Gede is exploited and taken out of context in order to reinforce racist stereotypes about Haitian Vodou. It is a shame, because the cultural context is very interesting. The namesake of Gede is the Gedevi â the people who were conquered by the Fon and forced to become untouchables (gravediggers). If I recall correctly, the entire Gedevi people were sold into slavery. And so Gede is the bottom of the bottom⌠In Korea, the clowns belonged to the lowest caste during the Joseon Dynasty. Although they were at the mercy of the upper classes, being kicked to the bottom allowed them to be vulgar and sexually liberated in ways that were otherwise forbidden. Imagine if the vulgarity and sexuality of Korean clowns were used to characterize the entire Korean peopleâŚ! Gede is like that, but more intense. Gede and ěŹě are very different, but both are frequently accused of being demons due to cultural misunderstandings. In terms of personality, I think fanmi Gede might be more similar to ëꚨëšâ âtrickstersâ who sometimes hurt and sometimes help, but not truly evil. Gede symbolizes the power of sex to conquer death through the regeneration of life⌠When you explain it in these terms, it is a concept that transcends culture.
Haitian Vodou finds itself caught between competing political agendas. Conservatives grossly misrepresent it, but there is also an overreaction on the other side. On a smaller scale, the same thing happened with musok in the English-speaking world. Several similarities between Vodou and musok are purely superficial. Some of this stuff is superstition, and some of it is scam artistryâbut not all of it! If you go far enough down the rabbit hole, you will discover that the similarities are not purely coincidental. They know things about the human body that most people donât.Â

StillâŚthe problem of economic exploitation is something that weighs on me. Ancestors often understood that something worked, but were not very good at explaining why it worked. Things like the pineal gland and dopamine receptors require a higher education, which is a privilege that many do not have. But if you donât have that understanding, you are left wide open to all sorts of scam artistry and exploitation⌠The human brain is designed to look for meaning, when there is none. This is why it is a mistake to reject evidence-based thinking. It is just naive to pretend that there isnât a problem of scam artistry in Vodou. It is not because âHaitians are scam artistsâ or âAfricans are scam artistsâ... When youâre kicked to the bottom, you do whatever you can to survive! Scam artists come in every color, race, and nationality. Often, the targets of scam artistry are oppressed people. Someone whoâs just trying reconnect with their ancestors, falling for a scam⌠Happens more than some care to admit. South Korea is no longer an oppressed place, but within Korean society mudang are marginalized. Koreans scam other Koreans too⌠You donât need to spend a lot of money to reconnect with your heritage!Â
Some people are good fits for spirituality. Others get badly burned, leave thinking itâs all fake and a scam. Science is not the enemy of religion or spirituality. Some things in musok are not indigenous to Korea⌠Traditions must evolve! I believe one necessary step is for people from Vodou, musok, and other spiritual communities to dialogue with each other. The commonalities reveal what is and is not a scam. Bear in mind, there are also lots of shades of grey⌠Things that are not actually scams, but inefficient or poor uses of money. Part of this art project was an attempt to start decoupling the religion from the therapeutic aspects of spirituality. Such attempts can only be considered successful if they do not abandon the marginalized and oppressed people that make up communities like Vodou and musok.
Although I draw comparisons to Vodou and musok, it is important to acknowledge some differences. Vodou thrives in Haiti; musok does not thrive in Korea. I grew up with my great grandmother, who was born before the Japanese annexation of Korea. 100 years might as well be 1,000 years in Korean history⌠So much has changed. If a Haitian person were to travel to Korea, I bet a lot of them would not like it thereâespecially if they believe in Vodou. I bet they would like Jeju Island better, but that is still like a miniature version of Vodou. Haiti is an entire nation of people. I have not even begun to explain the regional differences of Vodou⌠To be blunt, I think a lot of Haitians would feel that their culture is being demeaned by comparing it to what they would see in Korea. It is still a mistake to dismiss musok! South Korea is one of the most technologically advanced places on the planet. There is a huge database of information that is based out of Korea. Furthermore, there has been no cultural contact between Haiti and Korea. In other words, this is a valuable piece of evidence that Vodou is not scam artistry, and that the stereotypes that proliferate in America are exceedingly offensive. There are also lessons that can be learned from the campaign to recognize musok (mugyo) as a proper religion. Both cultures have something to gain from working with each other.
Since Iâve mentioned being transsexual, I should say this too⌠Some of this gender critical stuff goes too far. Traditionally, musok is the domain of women. Once I made the decision to transition, I gave this up too. Not because âIâm really a manâ but because I look like a man. It changed my biology too⌠There is a side of musok that is really modern, but to the traditionalists it is for women. Even if you are female, if you look like a male you donât belong. The old way put men on top and women on bottom⌠Musok was empowering for women, because it put them on top. Women deserve to have their own spaces. So I restrict my role to what would be appropriate for a man to do, and I mostly do it in private. There should be a word for someone whoâs not a man or a woman⌠A status thatâs lower than both.
What I do is kind of like weird Asian espiritismo⌠That is actually what got me down this rabbit hole in the first place. My first exposure to African Diaspora Religion was a Puerto Rican gentleman, who had set up an elaborate offering. I had to do a double-take, because it looked so Asian! I can now recognize that the offering was set up for Elegua⌠I had hoped that there might be some Koreans in Brazil with an interest in CandomblĂŠ, but that is unfortunately not the case⌠What a shame. Those with ancestors from Jeju would probably love Bessem. If I recall correctly, the counterpart to Bessem is Danwezo in Haiti⌠(In New Orleans Blanc Dani is often identified with Papa Dambala, but I think he might have been Danwezo instead, which would explain why âMonsieur DâEmbarassâ appears alongside âMonsieur Dannyâ)
Korean society advances at such an absurdly rapid pace, I would not be surprised if there is already an extremely accurate database of information about Haitian Vodou, somewhere on the Korean internet⌠At a glance, though, the information is not very accurate, as it often relies on materials that were originally published in English or French. A lot of garbage has made it past peer review⌠Even the term ëśëęľ is inaccurate. It should be ëł´ë not ëśë.Â
I urge those to listen to the Haitian community! Haitians often echo a sentiment, that most foreigners have no respect for their culture. Unlike the connection between Sweden and Japan, there is an imbalance power dynamic between South Korea and Haiti. South Korea is one of the most developed places in the worldâsomething that was earnedâbut Haiti is one of the least developed⌠There is a huge problem with people stealing from or stereotyping Haitian culture, to the detriment of the Haitian community. It is important to hear what they have to say, to not repeat the mistakes of the past.
For what itâs worth, I donât actually have a problem with homosexuals, lesbians, or transsexuals. The problem is the activists. The real thing activism needed to solve was the violence. Instead, it went in this completely insane direction. We talk about âwokeâ but it is actually transgender activism that is the single worst offender. Full of crazy narcissists that are completely out of touch with reality⌠Entitlement presented as âââoppressionâââ. Now people are crying about the backlash. Why should bad behavior go unpunished?!
When it comes to transgenderism, Western activism is completely full of shit⌠Transgender activists are full of shit. A lot of masculine-presenting homosexuals and lesbian feminists are also full of shit. Transgenderism is actually two different phenomena: gender inversion (âsexual inversionâ) and gender identity disorder (âgender dysphoriaâ). Lots of people are trying to cover up gender inversionâfeminine homosexuality in males; masculine lesbianism in females. If you arenât captured by ideology, it is pretty obvious that homosexuals are more like women and lesbians are more like men. Itâs also true that it is a spectrum. Inversion isnât just attraction to the same sex, but a person whose brain developed more like the opposite sex. It is a developmental disorder, but we donât punish the colorblind for the existence of colorblindness. In the extreme cases, you could argue itâs like being intersex, but they shouldnât be tricked into thinking they need surgery done to their healthy bodies. Most important, they need to organize and advocate for themselves. Too many people speak over them... Weâre never going to make any progress on this issue until the science of gender inversion âand its limitationsâare made known to the public.
I understand why some people donât trust any of this research⌠Thereâs a sick agenda to normalize pedophilia and the castration of children. If thereâs one group worth listening to, itâs Vaseylabs. They are world experts on homosexuality and lesbianism. They know a lot about what is true. VanderLaan et al (2022) "Carving the Biodevelopment of SameâSex Sexual Orientation at Its Joints" is also an interesting read.
Counterintuitively, gender-inversion is not the same thing as gender identity disorder. GID is âfeeling trapped in the wrong bodyâ syndrome âjust one of many body image disorders that exists in the modern age. It is obviously a mental disorder. Dress however you please, your body your choice, but donât force delusional thinking onto other people! Is Oli London a KoreanâŚ? No, heâs not, you idiot!! I have Late Onset GID, but Iâve gone far enough into transition to be very satisfied with the decision I made. Thereâs a lot of downsides to doing this, but I did something smart by recording my mental state beforehand. Mental health and bodily health are closely connected! Some people say âyouâll regret this in ten yearsâ but thereâs no way I would have lived another ten years if I hadnât done this. Itâs the same as when people get cosmetic surgery. Frankly, itâs a freakish thing to do to yourself, but sooner or later you must confront the reality that youâre going to die some day. You can die on another personâs terms, or you can die on your own terms⌠As Blaire White put it, walk that walk!
I should also explain this⌠Upon reviewing my medical records, it is clear that I had some sort of disorder that interfered with my organsâ ability to produce normal hormone levels. There is something out there that is poisoning a lot of people, interfering with normal hormonal activity. Hormones affect a lot of things, including brain activity. I would have had to have taken synthetic hormones, but the side effects of estrogen would have been terrible⌠Damned if you do, damned if you donât. Decouple ideology from decision-making. When it comes to adults, sometimes the benefits of transition outweigh the costs. That being said, I agree that it is a sin to choose testosterone instead. You donât have to tell me Iâm goin to HellâŚI already know that! You cannot decide to inject poison into your body without suffering consequences for it. To put things in perspective, I also consider the consumption of sugar and all sweeteners to be sins. Some of the things labeled âmedicineâ are poisonous too... This entire ě˛ë˛ë°ě world is sin!! Very few people can lead sinless lives⌠But it is dishonest to pretend that it isnât sinful. Transition is a last resort, and there are always costs and consequences to doing it.
There is one regret I have⌠My experience with Late Onset GID is that it emerges during puberty. From puberty throughout adult life, it never goes away. It is always there. So I spent many years of my life miserable⌠At times, I think I should have done this sooner. There are advantages to waiting, though. Now that I finally had the chance to do something, it is probably going to get taken away⌠This is what we get for not doing anything about âchild transitionâ and the spread of postmodern gender ideology to the Third World. Those who sit idly by in the face of evil are complicit in evil! Of course I wish I could just live out the rest of my life without the fear of being forced to detransition⌠Too bad. A lot of us were stupid and got duped by ideologues. The debt collector has come to collect his dues early!
I opine on this because the relationship between the Haitian community and the Western LGBT community (especially in America) is not good⌠A ton of the information written in English is bad and really offensive to their culture. You hear more and more Haitians speak out against it. Haitian culture actually has a fair view of homosexuality and lesbianism, especially in Vodou. . I should have known better because the same thing happened with Korean culture (mudang were falsely described as âQueerâ or âTwo-Spiritâ). There was a weird agenda to homosexualize non-Western cultures, even Korean culture. Thatâs what a lot of this âTwo-Spiritâ activism is. Some of it is indigenous people advocating for themselves, which I support, but there are also a lot of white people with distant or nonexistent heritage⌠This is another reason I am thinking about deleting this. The history between white LGBTs and Haitians is bad, and the last thing I want to do is make things harder for Kominote M⌠Kominote M is like the Polynesian SOGIs⌠They donât agree with Western LGBT activism.

I am not certain whether I can be described as âreligiousâ or âspiritualâ. The basis for my spiritual beliefs is neither pistis nor endoxa, but because I believe that many spiritual phenomena have scientific explanations that are not well understood by the masses. In either case, my beliefs are strictly personal. I know that many of the things I do are simply rituals that work for me, or are motivated by something like Pascalâs Fallacy. I also know enough to know that it is not all placebo effect. I reject both brands of theocracy that the political extremes endorse. Society cannot function without Separation of Church and State, and the Right to Freedom of Religion. Â
I have criticized the narcissism and corruption of the West, but the outright rejection of Western Science is an extreme and dangerous idea. The problem is not the scientific method, but that scientists fail to follow the scientific method. So much of academia is money, corruption, and ego, which creates distrust of scientific institutions.
Although I find Blaire White entertaining, I disagree with several of her political positions. To be conservative means defending the status quo, but I believe the status quo is broken. Capitalism in America has created a new age of Robber Barons, but the Left is hijacked by corrupt hypocrites. You cannot trust either extreme. They are both authoritarians who pushing the world into dystopia.Â
One need not be religious or spiritual to see the direction this world is headed in. Many things that seem to be unrelated to each other are actually connected. That is supported by evidence â not magical thinking. In the past, people deified âDestroyersâ such as Shiva and Kali. Destruction is not necessarily evil. Sometimes, the forest must burn down in order to grow back anew⌠That was the Old Rules, before we had nuclear weapons.

In part, my fervor in writing this is due to the realization that the land of my ancestors might never recover from the wound left by World War II. If I can have one childish dream, it is that Korea will not be nuked off the face of the Earth but reunifiedânot as the Balkans of the East, but as the Switzerland of the East. A vow from the world that there will never be World War III.Â
What I fear most of all is not death, but the death of my soul. That one day, I will be forced to pick between locking step with Nazis or locking step with Communists. I choose neither.
