Lillian Roth
I'll Cry Tomorrow was released on 25 December 1955.
Based on Lillian Roth's 1954 autobiography, which sold more than 7 million copies and was translated into more than 20 languages, the film softened some of the episodes from the autobiography, but retains the domineering stage mother in Lillian's life and her struggles with alcoholism.
I'll Cry Tomorrow was a commercial and critical success, receiving 4 Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress (Susan Heyward), Best Cinematography - Black-and-White (Arthur Arling), and Best Art Direction - Black-and-White. Helen Rose received the Oscar for Best Costume Design - Black-and-White.
Susan Hayward
Margaret Dumont and her daughter Lillian Roth play cards with Harpo and Chico in a scene from Animal Crackers (1930).
Lillian was not a fan of the Marx Brothers either on or off the screen. Paramount executives were unhappy with her diva behavior on her previous film, so they shipped her off to New York to get kicked around by the brothers.
