Pulling up her phone as it pings, Stray frowns down at the badly typed messages. Who was this again? She taps the notification, the most recent dating app she'd downloaded popping up on her phone screen. Why had she swiped on this profile? Clicking Kevin's icon, Stray glances over the profile once it loads. Right, yeah. No face pics, but this Kevin at least has a nice body. He also appears to be dumb as a box of rocks. There's not a trace of guilt across Stray's face when she looks up, but there is a smear of sauce at the corner of her mouth. Her grinning mouth as Stray shrugs. She's got one chicken wing still in hand and a hefty plate of picked clean bones at her elbow. "It's not my fault you needed a beer from the corner store," Stray chirps. "As if I'd sit here watching the food get cold," she scoffs. She nudges a Styrofoam container across the kitchen counter towards Ash. "Stop sulking and come eat or I'll devour your wings, too."

She plucks it up, too curious for her own good before Daisy snatches it away. "Who-" she starts, frowning over at Daisy. "That was a receipt. Isn't that like- An old folks home?" Stray verbally prods, gaze sweeping over the folder. "Is that your mom? I thought she was dead?"
it was so incredibly easy to track them down. too easy. actually, rather disappointing in a way. he thought that finding the facility that kept him under control as a child. there was something anticlimactic about the way people who had shaped your entire childhood could still be reduced to names on a file and a few scattered addresses if you knew where to look.
still, curiosity had its way of weaving into his brain and ultimately took over his more patient side.
homelander stood there for a minute longer than was necessary. it was weird how time had not changed this place and although it had been a while, it was as he was there... back then...

the thought cut cleanly through the drift, sharp enough to steady him although the feeling never truly left him
his jaw tightened slightly as he stepped forward again, boots echoing faintly against the structure’s worn interior. the air inside felt stale in a way that wasn’t just physical. like the place itself had been waiting. like it remembered more than it was willing to show.
his gaze shifted slowly, scanning the space with controlled precision now. not the searching of someone uncertain, but the assessment of someone deciding what mattered. behind him lay a mess of bodies and fire, as there seemed to be these days but the ringing in his ears blocked out the screams. as he was passing the further dead bodies, he had seen it. the woman being examined, being treated like dirt by these filthy ungrates. non supes. how dare they touch and prod at their betters like animals.
sometimes it happened just as quick as blinking. impulse. when the smell of burning flesh hit his nose, he knew the scienist in the room was dead and that it was just him and the lab rat.
lab rat. just like he once was.
the thought lingered longer than it should have, settling somewhere beneath the surface where he didn’t like to linger for too long. his gaze finally fixed properly on them. not the scientists. not the room. not the blood still cooling somewhere behind him. them
“you’ve been here a while,” he said at last, voice even. almost conversational again, as though the carnage behind him were nothing more than background noise.
his eyes narrowed just slightly, studying them with that quiet, invasive attention that never quite felt like looking so much as taking inventory.
"haven't you?"
For a beat, Stray doesn't register that the screams are external and not the phantom cries of her own nervous system. The screams could have been her own but the sudden stampede of feet trying to escape their fate? She wasn't imagining that. Fear sweat permeates the room as the cries grow louder and abruptly cut off. Stray stares at the lab's hallway door as the others in the room do and who strides in? The star spangled Boy Scout himself. Fuck.
This can't be happening. It can't end like this. Surviving all of the bullshit this place has put her through and everything before only to die in one mad man's rampage. Blink and Stray missed it, the death of the man who had been making her life hell on earth for so many years. She wants to cry. To scream. To tear her skin off or at the very least have one last stand as something dangerous and primal on four paws. Stray can't do any of it; drained to the dregs with no energy to pull on for any dramatic action. Instead, she laughs once Homelander focuses his attention on her. A quiet chuckle that makes her chest shake but little else. *This is it.* "Oh my fucking god-" Stray gets out, that chuckle converting to a hysterical giggle. "You-" The scent of blood and charred flesh threatens to choke her. She hates how familiar that smell is. Stray chokes on a reply, breathing too rapid and her little heart hammering in her ribcage. "I- yeah. Ten years. they're not getting a fucking four star review from me." "Can you like- make it quick? Quick would be nice for a change," she sighs out. "I am- I'm so very tired," Stray admits, voice not pleading but resigned before her eyes snag on the corpse of a man who has been making her life a living hell for years. He's not so much a man anymore as a pile of meat sliced in two. Stray smirks, pointed canines flashing. "At least that fucker is dead," another rueful laugh. "Thanks for that."
chin dips towards the collar of fabric that's surprisingly soft draped around his throat. uneven grin. did he catch her attempt at prying? more than likely by the knowing look that pinches the corners of his eyes and brings a thumb up to scratch the bridge of a pointed nose. "nah. just knew about it." truth or not? hard to tell. the way he keeps his tone even? doesn't show any physical signs of lying. only that he understood where she wanted to take that conversation and not being a willing participant towards heading in the direction it'd require.
green eyes flick up at the canopy of trees outlining the further they step across the shattered and uneven remains what used to be a concrete roadway cutting through the trees in a path to the underground facility that he would like to put as far behind them as they can. in the shortest amount of time possible.
"cassandra. haven't heard that name in a long time. used to know a few before.. well. this." soldier boy doesn't give her a name. though most people know the one he projected out into the world before he became soldier boy. hell. they teach that shit in schools. never his last. never the one he gave up the second his father spat one last line of disapproval in at his feet. the one vought promised him he'd never need once he was given the moniker that would become his identity. his life. his blood imbedded purpose.

unlocking anything else takes time. the patience of a saint. and trust that he's not offered up to a soul since.. well. since. "what got your attention about this one? there's ghost stories of dozens of abandoned tunnels gutting through national parks. underneath monuments. shopping malls. churches." his steps come to a pause.
long frame turns to face her, eyes catching her attention and honing in. no gruffness. no rough edges. mostly. curiosity. "seems strange to end up meeting someone out of the blue. big coincidence?" broad shoulders encased in green rise and fall. "maybe.." twitch of a smile. "stopped believing in coincidence a long time ago."
did you follow me here? or were you sent here for me to find? unspoken ponderings of an old soldier trained not to believe in bullshit theories as fate and weird place at weird time. got him in trouble more times than he cares to admit.
He's giving nothing, which is understandable. Stray isn't exactly a wealth of information for this man either. Her skin itches to slip into a larger form, something with stripes and enough jaw power to dent his busted ass looking shield. Still- No need for that yet. She watches Soldier Boy's advance, taking in nature already reclaiming this space. It doesn't bode well for finding anything useful. Files gone to rot and mold and it all screams of a time before the program Stray had been dragged into. -but a lead is a lead.
Sighing to herself, Stray follows in the man's wake before catching up enough to match his pace. There's still an arm length between them; saftey first. She only shrugs at the comment about her name, but the this. Now that's curious. This being Homelander, this being The Boys, or this being the Russians. Stray can only go off what the others told her of this man. None of it was a glowing review. Nowe the questions of the why she's here. Stray can bullshit that. "C'mon, what's creepier than some abandoned Vaught lab?" Sharp canines flash with Stray's grin, jerking to a halt once Soldier Boy turns to face her again. She slides hands into the front pocket of her hoodie, going for casual with head tipping back. "All kinda spooky shit in there, I bet," head tips towards the building before eyes settle back on his face. Stray puffs out a breath. "You know, you snuck up on me," she points out with a casual air, slipping by him to trudge up the debris covered steps. At the top, Stray pauses to look back. "So no, I didn't track down a golden age movie star in the woods to stalk him. I'm not that sort of fan girl." "Now are you still playing escort or is it too scary for you?" She's grinning again, impish with eyes dancing with feline playfullness.
❝ Sure do, and it's nowhere near glamorous, I'll tell you that.❞ A faint smile on her cherry stained lips, ❝ Being a supe. . .god. . .Just being born with these 'special gifts' gets a target on your back. It's all a bunch of bullshit. You either wind up dead, traumatized or an employee of Vought. Sometimes you manage to get a two-fer. ❞ A vague gesture as she relaxes more and more with every word. The flask lifted again, the last bit of it finished off before she caps it and puts it back into her top.
❝ I unfortunately have a type and it'd make my mother cry is she knew what I was willing to put up with.❞ she murmurs with both a shrug and a faint thoughtful hum. ❝ I should left forever ago but. . .there are a few things that make me stay. Like the make-a-wish kids. . .No one believes me when I say it but ahh. . .that's one of the most fulfilling things you can do.❞ She trails off, pausing, ❝ Yeahhh. . .anyway, branding is a total pain in the ass but sometimes it gets you access to free disneyland overnights and that's pretty dope. No lines, free access. It's a wild time.❞ A casual retreat to humor, a way to stop herself from talking too much about the kids. Her being a telepath allowed her access to their pain, and it has been very somber for her. . .but she's kept that burden for herself, a sacrifice to touch the lives of those less fortunate. It's why she signed her contract, afterall.

Dead, traumatized, or with Vaught. Welp. Stray sure as shit knows her place in that list. Now this woman? Stray is going to guess she's checked that traumatized box as well, but the money sure must make that easier. She can't fault her for picking the path of least resistance on that front. Not really. She drops an elbow onto the short wall, settling in more comfortably while watching Prism finish off the flask. How much had been in there before she started? "Oh, oh nooo," Stray groans. "Please don't tell me your type is that boy scout?" Now she looks up at Prism with something akin to pained pity before her ears snag on Make-A-Wish. "Wait, you grant wishes? I've never seen any publicity for that. I know A-Train's shit gets posted any time he visits a cancer kid, but you?" Now Prism has Stray's full interest. She drops palms onto the wall, hopping up to perch beside the other woman. At that pointed question, Stray simply shrugs. There's no way she's spilling her entire story, even if Prism can pluck flashes of what she's trying not to think of right from her mind. "No one cares much about cancer kids when they're all grown up and no longer dying of cancer. I'm free roaming," Stray offers up with a smile.

He hadn't really meant to mumble that aloud... just thinking, considering a case he was working. Callum, lost in his own world among the bustle of the city, forgetting there were other ears listening.
He wasn't usually this sloppy. But, sleep deprivation was a hell of a mind-altering drug. And sleep had been a very foreign concept to him the last few days, between the legal cases above board... and the less than legal activities after nightfall.
" Charity lawyer...? Well, okay, that's fair. Not the way I'd describe myself, but fair. Why? In the market for some legal representation? "
"Uh-" Stray stares up at the man, at the lawyer. It has to be him now that he's standing beside her, muttering the strangest shit under his breath. She squints, trying to recall his name Something something Greaves. Stray hadn't payed that much attention, given the man is a lawyer. Chewing her lip a beat, Stray gives him another side long glance. Her brows jump at the question before she huffs. "Ah. I uh- No? I can't say I've gotten into any disputes over my rent with my landlord or anything like that. Don't have any lawsuits in my back pocket…" Stray trails off, eyebrow knitting together. Granted, being a Jane Doe because of Vaught could be something but Stray doesn't want that sort of heat. "You prone to pick up cases while out for a stroll?" She adds, curiosity flashing in those too-green eyes.

the chain felt familiar in his hand, cool against thick fingers as he handled it with careful, almost reverent gentleness. standing behind her, he lifted it slowly around her neck, his touch light like he was afraid to break it. a warm smile pulled at the contours of his mouth, softened by the quiet ache beating beneath his ribs — not painful, but a lingering thought that linda had never gotten the chance to put it on herself.
it settled perfectly on her, resting like it was always meant to be there. the small magnifying glass caught the light with a faint glint, bright and fleeting against her skin. boots took a slow step back, one hand falling still at his side with the other brushing against her shoulder when she pivots back.

Stray swallows, eyes fixed on the far wall as Ash takes the necklace back. It's not a collar. It's not a collar. Only a thin metal chain that'll hang loose about her throat. Not constraining in the least and Stray knows it'll shift with her like the rest of her clothing. There can't be iron in it. She lets her breath out slowly, realizing too late that it had sped up the moment the necklace settled at her throat. Ash hasn't even clasped it in place. Stray's hand comes up, fingers nudging the magnifying glass gently once the weight settles on her breast bone. No big deal. Stray takes a measured breath before turning to look up at Ash, fingers now fiddling proper with the charm. She leans her cheek into the cup of his hand, eyes drifting shut for a beat. Smiling, Stray opens her eyes. "Hm. Am I suppose to feel different? Like a spell or an aura, cause of all the luck."
