one of the most common issues we face is colourism — especially by our own people. from skin bleaching and brightening products to light-skin bias, colourism is an extremely common form of racism and often starts at a young age at home. in south asia, parents are praised for having children with fairer skin tones because of the hurtful ideals from the west and believe that the lighter you are the prettier, which is ultimately not true. the most beautiful thing you could be is yourself and that includes showcasing your skin the way it really is.

it's not their fault that they think that, due to colonialism especially from the british in the 1700s, there was a colour bias implemented that meant that individuals that were light-skinned had more opportunities and government roles with higher powers. this increased the lack of representation and made us feel inferior.

the film and media industry is such a huge part of south asia and for the longest time actresses with lighter skin would get cast for innocent, heroine roles but people with darker skin were made the villains or background characters to seem less important which further cemented the idea of a colour bias.

Sri Lanka

in sri lanka today, tamilians are still affected by the genocide that began almost 70 years ago, due to the atrocities of the war many people have been internally displaced and forced to constantly migrate. almost a quarter of the tamil population live as refugees or migrants; and the disappeared are known to be dead. 40 years ago, a mass anti-tamil riot broke out that left 3,000 people dead and 150,000 homeless; businesses were targeted and buildings were looted. the problem is that there has been no justice served or meaningful accountability and there are major concerns for laws that enable human rights violations. to avoid a repeat of this incident the UN should follow their way to investigate the tamil genocide. ‎ pearl of the indian ocean

Afghanistan

afghan women's rights are being reduced to almost nothing under taliban rule, facing an enormous humanitarian crisis international aid can only do so much. in june, the taliban intimidated and threatened women who worked for UN agencies and their families in the capital city Kabul. they have also continued to oppress and attack independent journalists and media outlets criticising the talibans' policies. right now we need to close the major international funding gap to prevent the total collapse of basic rights and needs. ‎ help afghanistan carrd malala fund afghanaid amnesty international take action

Bhutan

more and more families in bhutan are beginning to suffer from food insecurity due to climate vulnerabilities and extreme geographical isolation, almost 50% of all imports are food that is from neighbouring countries like india. because of the extreme weather patterns and limited local yields bhutan frequently suffers damage to critical roads and farmland; cutting off food supply chains to remote villages that make up most of the country. they are in need of infrastructure upgrades and farming methods that are able to withstand the mountainous climate, also food reserves for populations like the bhutanese to protect from global price strikes. ‎ hunger and natural disasters

Nepal

nepal struggles to access basic health services and the ones available are often badly equipped, the staff lack training or are unable to help in complex situations. mothers are severely at risk and most cannot afford to pay for something so important like life saving medical treatment. hunger and food shortages are also very common; due to the fact that only 20% of nepal's land area can be cultivated. many people in villages only have food security for a few months each year however with donations change is possible. ‎ support healthcare nepal appeal

Bangladesh

Maldives
