never join a local trans group in proximity to a naval base
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

guy on the subway with one ear pierced, little gold hoop. other guy on the subway very quickly and subtly googling "which one is the gay ear". it is not the gay ear. visible disappointment on his face as he puts his phone away.

new fav video just dropped
I think this is just a trend everywhere but I've been very frustrated this week by how much admin work is being outsourced to me as the patient/customer.
My orthodontist tells me I can make an appointment with the surgeon. I call the surgeon. They tell me I need a new referral. I call the orthodontist. They do a referral. I call the surgeon. Referral didn't come through. They tell me about their special unique system we have to use. I call the ortho again and walk them through the referral. I call the surgeon. They say the referral was missing some details so they have to do it again. I call the ortho.
The insurance company calls me about repair shops. I give them the name of the repair shop which I already gave them yesterday. They say they're not in their system but I can use them, but I have to call the repair shop to ask them to contact the insurance company. I call the repair shop and they say the insurance company is supposed to email them.
I feel like at a certain point these constant fetch quests become unreasonable?? Is it too much to expect these groups to communicate with each other instead of making me run back and forth between them???
Made this post and then the new property manager (who started on Monday and only finally emailed us today because I sent a vaguely professionally hostile email to her boss because I hadn't heard anything and was not convinced she existed) asked for a list of open action items which her predecessor should have had but apparently wasn't keeping track of, which I learned when I met her boss and provided her with the list of open action items, which I guess tragically died in a fire in the last 2 weeks since she was sitting at my kitchen table, being menaced by the skull. How many people's jobs am I doing now
The phrase arrived in my head so completely formed and concrete that I couldn’t believe it wasn’t already established in the lexicon, but at
It has a name!!!

Hey I just want to throw out a quick THANK YOU to everyone who has reblogged this to add drawings of their characters kissing. I would reblog every single one but I don't want to spam anyone's dash, so instead here is a single addition below the jump with screenshots and tagged credits. Y'all give me life. Thank you thank you.

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.
just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.
i have asthma & keep one of these running in my room perpetually. after I set it up the difference in my sleep quality was pretty much night and day. Dont waste your time on proprietary air filters; SIMPLY bust out the duct tape

Nolan's Odyssey: The Inaccuracy List
The trailer for Christopher Nolan's new adaptation of "The Odyssey" by the ancient poet Ovid is out now and proving controversial due to what audiences perceive as inaccuracies to actual history. Here is a list of things in the trailer that have garnered complaints:
Matt Damon is of Greek descent, not ancient Greek.
The film boasts of being the first shot entirely on IMAX, but the horizontal 70mm format wasn't developed until the 1970s.
Nolan used a giant animatronic puppet to portray the cyclops Polyphemus, which means he was played by Nobody, and the real Polyphemus was not at all a fan of Nobody. Sadly as Nobody offended him, Nolan didn't notice.
Most ancient statues were, in their times, painted with bright colors as depicted in the trailer, but very few dyes existed back then compared to now. Until the 1500s, the colors blue, red, yellow, green, all fleshtones, and all secondary colors were impossible. Thus, all the sculptures should be painted the only color possible to the ancients: Chartreuse polka-magenta gull grey.
Soldiers are seen wearing armor reminiscent of many portrayals of Greek armor in films like "300," but in reality, the ancient Greeks went to battle wearing outfits resembling modern tuxedo shirts with printed-on bow ties and buttons; and no pants or loincloths. Hence their marching army's name, the "ταξιαρχία με νουντλς που αναπηδούν" or "Bouncing Noodle Brigade."
Several Doric pillars are seen, when it takes place in Corinthian times. All things considered, that's pretty Ionic.
