spyfox having the highest prey drive of the mercs makes a lot of sense because whenever i play as spy and a friendly turns their back to me i'm always viscerally and immediately tempted to go for a backstab. like no i DON'T want to stab but what if......what if.........i imagine he feels much the same
If not allowed to backstab teammate... why they turn around???

SPY, CYANIDE TEETH AND SUICIDE
Hi. Hello. Hiiiii :) I've been in a chatty mood recently and felt like rambling and sharing some semi-organized thoughts about the French Fuck I have dinging around in my brain. Might share more if people like it? But like, you have to tell me if you do, otherwise I'll just shroud myself in darkness and disappear for one billion more years. Uhhh this is very obvious if you could not tell by the title but tw for casual suicide mentions!! Anywaysss
I'm a big fan of the fact that Spy doesn't seem too bothered by death. In fact, like sex, he likely sees death more as a tool that he can use to his advantage. Specifically, it's his easy way out of difficult/undesirable situations.
I like to think that, after getting used to respawn, Spy starts to use his cyanide teeth semi-frequently. Most of the time it's to avoid long, painful deaths. Sometimes the enemy thinks they've finished you off, but by some miracle, with all your limbs broken and your ribcage blown open, you're still kicking and in agonizing pain. Cyanide is an easy fix for that! Sometimes he uses it to avoid torture. This is why it's such a bitch to hold either spy captive; if you don't incapacitate them and remove their easy means of escape, then all your hard efforts are for naught. All it takes is a quick crack! And in seconds, your potential source for that sweet sweet intel is welcomed back to his base after taking a trip through respawn. It's way harder to deal with the BLU Spy this way after the fridge incident. The slightest whiff of that RED doctor sets him off almost instantly. A lot of the time, the deaths are completely unnecessary, sometimes even detrimental to the match. He does not care. He will NOT take ANY chances under ANY circumstance. Fuck the match, his ass is NOT going back into that fridge.
I like to think after a while, Spy gets a little too comfortable killing himself as a means of avoidance. He won't admit it. He doesn't like to aknowledge it. But lately, it just... works too well to get away from other things.
Soldier's spontaneous military drills are nothing to him now, if he can't cloak (because Soldier tackles the air until he GETS him) he can just blow his brains out and slink back to his smoking room once respawn spits him out. Losing an argument doesn't matter anymore, if his pride is wounded enough and he doesn't want to deal with it, it won't matter if people grab him to stay. He can kick the bucket and it'll sort itself out. Hell, don't feel like walking back to base after a horribly lost match? Pop a cyanide baby, he's there in seconds and he can lie on the cold hard floor to clear his mind. Something about the sweet embrace of death feels nicer and nicer for his tired old bones every passing day. It's a respite from... everything. Life is just such a drag nowadays.
Soldier berates him for his methods. Calls them the "coward's way out." Spy rolls his eyes and says it's efficient. Sniper looks at him weird. Tells him he's been "doin' that stuff more than usual." (Translation: You're abusing respawn a concerning amount, mate.) What? What?? Hasn't he killed himself to escape situations before? Can't he use the tools he has at his disposal to navigate his situations better?
Nobody believes he's navigating anything better like this. They just find it irritating. If he hears something he doesn't want to hear, he just cracks another fucking cyanide. Can you stop running away from your problems at every turn? For fuck's sake, man!
Also this is less concerning to the team in a Depression sense and more in the "Dude stop killing yourself over and over outside of battle we don't know what that'll do to respawn." ...The self-loathing and identity issues do contribute to how easily he can pull the trigger every time though. COugh cough but that stuff is for another time maybe. Cough.
Do you think he commits suicide recreationally... you just open the door to the smoking room and his lifeless body is hanging from the rafters-
And then he walks back in past you, asking you what the hell you're doing walking in unannounced, as if he didn't just hang himself. His body is STILL there. He does not aknowledge it. State your business or get out.
God, imagine after the comics, Scout were to confront Spy about knowing he's his dad... imagine they're not hooked to respawn anymore. This surely would be a situation that would frighten Spy/make him very uncomfortable. What if, on instinct, he cracked the last cyanide tooth he had. What if his eyes widened in horror the moment he swallowed and realized what he did. Oh god, oh god not yet, he doesn't want it yet, he was just scared he was just scared-
Imagine he dies so many times he overloads the respawn machine and it glitches and takes longer to spit him back out... what if he comes out wrong? Oughhghgh. There's so many possibilities... I just think his too-casual relationship with death is neat...

Tf2 concept art analysis/rambling part 2, this time featuring Spy. Spy has very little concept art compared to his son so this one is much more analysis-heavy. But I think (hope) I have some interesting points!
