“Wow,” Will breathes out, just on this edge of teasing. “You sound very confident about this.”
“Well,” Mike shrugs, swallowing hard in a desperate attempt to soothe his very, very dry mouth, “I don’t know why someone wouldn’t be interested in you.”
“Oh?” Will says, and it’s definitely teasing now, enough for Mike to feel himself turning warm, all down his neck and to the tips of his own – sadly unpatterned – socks. “Someone?”
“Yeah.” Mike nods. Oh, god. This is fine. “In a very arbitrary sense of the word. Just– people. Someone.”
Mike is approximately ninety-eight percent sure that his feelings are requited. That last two percent, however, has really been throwing him for a loop.

"Welcome to Scoops To Go, Scoops Ahoy's mobile adventure," Will recites. He and Max flipped a coin this morning and he lost, so he has to say it every time. "What can we scoop for you today?"
The boy lets go of the girl's hand and taps his chin with his finger. The girl latches onto his arm. Max wonders if she's under some kind of curse where she has to be touching him at all times. Blink twice if you're cursed, she thinks. The girl does not blink twice. "Hmm," says the boy, in a pantomine of deep thought that Max finds extremely grating. "For me, a double scoop of chocolate in a cup, and for the lady, one scoop of strawberry, one scoop of vanilla. Vanilla on the bottom, sprinkles on top, in a waffle cone.”

Mike caps the cup and slides it across the pickup counter to Will, following it up with a wrapped straw and his wrapped lemon loaf immediately after. “Medium iced chai with oat milk and brown sugar syrup, and a lemon loaf for yellow flannel guy!”
Will grabs his straw, shooting a disapproving look at Mike as he carefully unwraps it. “Remind me to never wear this flannel in public again.” He grabs his drink, slipping his straw into it with steady hands.
“Nah, it looks nice on you. Don’t let me stop you, Just Will.” Mike is grinning so hard his face hurts. He’s more awake than he was previously, most of his exhaustion washing away throughout this interaction.
Will sighs, his cheeks going slightly red at Mike’s compliment, bringing his straw to his pink lips and taking a small sip. Mike watches Will’s gaze travel down to Mike’s chest, his eyes stopping on his name tag for only a second before they dip slightly lower. His lips quirk up into a small smile as he swallows his sip of chai. “I like your pin, by the way.”

Mike is not a creep. He’s not. It’s not his fault that Max claimed the bigger bedroom of their new apartment so quickly, so he had to take the smaller one in the back. And it’s not his fault that the tiny window in said bedroom’s only view is of the apartment across the alley from him. And it’s definitely not his fault that the guy living in said apartment is … unspeakably attractive. Horrifically so. Like, truly, life-ruiningly attractive.
In his defence, though Max has been trying to make fun of him, she’s down just as bad for the guy’s sister (Mike decides not to imagine how, if by some miracle the pair of them manage to pull, they’d be siblings-in-law, because ew), so she can’t be talking.
