Procreate for iPhone on the App Store This is kind of nuts. Procreate Pocket, which is my favorite iOS app for drawing and painting stuff, as well as for a bunch of advanced photo-tweaking, now works with the Apple Watch. The 'digital palette' puts color swatches on the watch's screen, which you tap to pick a color. Just like using a wooden artists' palette to hold your colors, only smaller and less messy. You can also shift the tools panel onto the watch's screen, and you can use a force tap on the watch to create a new document on the iPhone. Wild right? But also super useful, if it works right. One annoying thing about using an iPad to sketch is dealing with the on-screen controls. They're a distraction. Shifting them into one off-canvas spot could be just the mental disconnect needed to concentrate better on the painting at hand. To be clear, this is iPhone-only right now. I wonder when the iPad will work with the Apple watch?

Truefilm on the App Store Truefilm, the amazing Lightroom replacement for the iPhone, just got updated to fix the bug that strips metadata from saved images. I'm stoked, because I love this app, and now I can use it.

Remember -- this is the same server backend that Amazon rents to Dropbox.

It's no Wacom (any mention of "palm rejection technology" makes me nervous), but who cares if it mostly gets the job done?

Filters for iPhone on the App Store Yet another decent editing app for the iPhone, filters promises "over 800 ways to transform your photographs." The problem is, it sometimes feels like you're flipping through all 800 to get to the one you like. Aside from the usual editing tools, plus some nice texture and gradient overlays, my favorite part is the editing section. Along with brightness and contrast adjustments are tools called "Intimidate," "Luna" and "Shine." Don't miss the icon for Intimidate either. The other thing I like is the $1 price, with no extra in-app purchases. What I don't like is that all photos are saved with today's date, not the date of the original photo, and all other metadata is removed on save. Not cool, Filters. Not cool at all.

Priime on the App Store It's not enough for a filters app to just filter your photos any more. Oh no. There has to be a gimmick. Still not enough? What about two gimmicks? Or three gimmicks, if you count the "ii" in the name Priime. Priime is a filter app, only the filters are designed by photographers. The included ones are pretty good, and you can preview others before buying them (a buck a pack or -- currently -- $10 for the whole shebang). How do you preview them? I'm glad you asked. You hit the "Suggest" button and Priime analyses your photo, based on season taken, pictorial content (color) and suggests a bunch of filters. The app always seems to suggest paid filters, but maybe that's just me. There are regular adjustments too, although get some extras, like "Structure" (which punches up sharpness and local contrast) in addition to the usual brightness and contrast settings. Finally, the app saves its edits over the top of the original photos, losslessly. This is an iOS 8 feature any app can add, so I'm glad that Priime uses it. IT means a lot less photo-roll clutter.

App Shopper: Layout from Instagram (Photography) Instagram's new Layout app is pretty good. I like two things about it. One is the simplicity. You make collages, just like in a million other apps, only here you never wonder how it works. It's easy, and I imagine the design work to get it this simple wasn't so easy. The second thing I like is the Faces tab, which uses facial recognition to group all your photos of humans (and -- on my iPhone -- one fake unicorn) together. It's so good that you might want to use the app just to find faces. Also noteworthy is that the app boots you out into the Instagram app to post to Instagram. No privileged in-app posting here.

PICSPLAY 2 - Photo Editor & Selfie Retouch by JellyBus Inc If Picsplay 2 had launched a couple of weeks ago, I'd be praising it the way a stoner praises the taste of a melon after smoking a bong[footnote]Seriously dude -- try it.[/footnote]. But while this multi-talented editor is indeed slick and easy to use, and packed with the useful (warp distortion aka "face reshaping," curves and live histograms) to the less-useful (stickers), it's just not as slick, easy-to-use or as interesting as recent new apps like Enlight, Truefilm, Black or Darkroom. Seriously. This last month has been amazing for iOS photo apps. Picsplay 2 is still worth a look, but it's a few weeks too late to get any rave reviews.

You have the choice to delete some or all of them. Best of all, Kempt will keep your deleted photos for some time in case you change your mind. Using advanced algorithms, Kempt automatically detects your fuzzy and grainy photos and gives you the option to delete all or some of them. Kempt does all the hard work of filtering through your photos so you don't have to.

IK Multimedia | iRig 2 - Guitar interface adapter for iPad, iPhone iPod touch, Android and Mac. iRig 2 on Amazon The iRig guitar connector has gotten a solid update. It's still analog, so still noisier than digital (cheaper too), but other than that it looks fantastic. It uses a full-sized 1/4-inch guitar jack for output, adds a headphone jack for listening in direct, and has a built-in TRRS (four 'channel') cable to hook up to the iPhone. It also works with Android now. There's more: you get an input-level dial (although some good software allows you to tweak this in-app) and a neat FX-selector switch. This one lets you send a clean, unprocessed signal to your amp while siphoning the same signal into your iPhone. Use this with a tuner, or to record. Flipping the switch makes it work like any other guitar interface, using your iPhone/iPad as a sound processor before sending the result to the speakers. It looks rad. I especially like this last clean/dirty switch. And it's just $40.

Gradiance on the App Store I haven't tested this, but it looks like a powerful app for adding gradients to your images. It seems like it does every kind of gradient you could think of -- almost literally: There's a freeeform option in there too.
