Instagram's Layout is as Simple as Possible, and No Simpler

App Shopper: Layout from Instagram (Photography) Instagram's new Layout app is pretty good. I like two things about it. One is the simplicity. You make collages, just like in a million other apps, only here you never wonder how it works. It's easy, and I imagine the design work to get it this simple wasn't so easy. The second thing I like is the Faces tab, which uses facial recognition to group all your photos of humans (and -- on my iPhone -- one fake unicorn) together. It's so good that you might want to use the app just to find faces. Also noteworthy is that the app boots you out into the Instagram app to post to Instagram. No privileged in-app posting here.

Hands-On Report: Polaroid Instamatic is Finally a Real Product Photography Bay's Eric Reagan touches Polaroid's Socialmatic, the camera that looks like the Instagram logo and has a ZINK photo printer built in.

It’s an awkward, bulky square of a camera. The Android interface is also a little awkward on this boxy camera. That said, there’s an undeniable amount of cool fun to the Instamatic. A big part of the size issue can be attributed to the built-in printer on the Instamatic. It prints to 2″ x 3″ Zink paper and spits images out the side of the camera.

Regular Polaroid cameras were bulky too, also thanks to their "printer". But unless Zink has improved since I tried out a previous incarnation of this camera, then you'll be better off with your phone and a Canon Selphy printer. One other thing. I wonder if anyone else but Polaroid could make a camera that looks like this? Instagram can hardly sue when the Instagram logo itself was already ripped off from one of Polaroid's old cameras.

Frameworks' Backlit Wooden Photo Frame is Frikkin Gorgeous

Frameworks I'm no fetishist for retro tech, but damn if this Kickstarter frame isn't the most gorgeous thing you'll see this week. It's a wooden photo frame with a dim-able LED backlight, a big control knob on the front and a braided power cord around back. The idea is that you use the companion app to order photos, which show up in fancy packaging reminiscent of vinyl-record sleeves. You slot in the print (made on paper that's designed to be backlit) and set the lighting level you prefer. It's like an analog version of an LCD photo frame. The Kickstarter only has a few days left, but I'm posting this as a reminder for if and when they ship IRL. Via Petapixel

People-search and caption editing on Instagram -- finally If there was a way to search for people in the Instagram app, I never found it. Apparently it wasn't just me.

With this in mind, you’ll see that the Explore icon at the bottom of your screen has changed to a magnifying glass.

You still have to pick through two explore tabs to get there, but the search bar is right at the top of the page. Also, caption editing:

This has been one of the top requests that we’ve heard from the community, and we’re excited to finally bring it to you today. You’ll find a new “Edit” option in the menu beneath your image. Tap it to edit your caption.

And it only took them four years.
