Mo Dexian is set during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. To escape the war, the protagonist, Mo Dexian, flees to Gezhi Town, a remote and peaceful town hidden deep in the mountains of western Hubei. However, the flames of war eventually reach even this secluded place. As Japanese tanks advance to the outskirts of the town, a single Solothurn automatic cannon unexpectedly becomes the townspeople's final weapon against the invaders.
The film continues its core narrative of ordinary people struggling to survive amid the turmoil of a great era. Faced with overwhelming odds, a group of civilians who simply want a peaceful life find themselves with nowhere left to retreat. Forced into a corner, they rise together to defend the home beneath their feet.
In 2015, after extensive field research and years of refining the concept, the Daylight Entertainment creative team decided to tell a small, intimate story set against the vast backdrop of the War of Resistance. They centered the story on an anti-aircraft automatic cannon facing off against an enemy tank that was ill-suited for street fighting. Yet the people operating the cannon are not soldiers, but mechanics, farmers, craftsmen, and other ordinary civilians who only wish to live peaceful lives.
How do they journey from simply wanting to survive to choosing to fight back? What struggles and awakening must they experience along the way?
After ten years in the making, Gezhi Town premiered in theaters in 2025, bringing audiences the story set in the fictional town of Gezhi Town.
Following the film's theatrical release, audiences responded enthusiastically and expressed a strong desire to see the director's cut, a sentiment that perfectly matched the creative team's own aspirations. During production, the filmmakers developed rich backstories and character details for every role, but many compelling character arcs could not be fully explored because of the runtime limitations of a theatrical feature.
Driven by a desire to explore a new way of telling the story, the web film Mo Dexian was born. Rather than simply being an extended cut of the theatrical version, it is a complete reworking of the screenplay's structure, narrative rhythm, and emotional progression, resulting in a fully independent web film with its own artistic expression.
This new release once again stars Xiao Zhan, Zhou Yiran, and Peng Yuchang (listed in stroke order), with Gan Yunchen, Xu Juncong, Liu Yuan (Liu Haoran), Aruna, Yan Zhidu, Yang Xinming, Zhou Siyu, Zu Feng, Liao Fan, and Tan Junpeng (Yin Zheng) (listed in stroke order) making special appearances. The entire original cast returns, while Liu Haoran makes his first appearance in the "De Xian" series.
The complete release consists of three episodes with a total runtime of more than 160 minutes. All episodes will be released simultaneously, preserving the integrity and immersive flow of the story while also matching the viewing habits of online audiences, who prefer the flexibility of watching in segments and resuming at their convenience.
