Stolen Fire / 取火

Our journey through life is experiential and although there is a lot of emphasis put on academically and theoretically knowing about the many elements of life, our experience of the world involves far more than what we can put into words. We hold those experiences emotionally within ourselves, shaping our perceptions and influencing our patterns of behavior.

The psyche is very intelligent, it knows how to heal itself and it works very hard at doing so. When given the freedom of expression and exploration we intuitively know how to heal from the stresses we encounter, yet we often don’t give ourselves the emotional space, freedom, or even permission to explore our inner world. Creative expression offers a way to more easily bypass the conscious mind.

Clemens Wilhelm is a contemporary artist and filmmaker from Berlin (Germany) whose scope of work ranges from performances to short films and video installations. Stolen Fire will show three of his short films which explore the connection between oral story-telling and the use of visual images: A HORSE WITH WHEELS tells the story of a 13.000 year-old Ice Age sculpture discovered in a French cave, KIKI THE WAR DOG tells the life-story of a dog in World War 2, and PETER IS DEAD tells the life of Peter, a truck driver from West-Berlin. All three works exist somewhere between the genres of video art and experimental documentary.

Jan Martinec and Clemens Wilhelm have collaborated on several projects, including his recent short film "A Horse With Wheels" which will be presented at Stolen Fire.

Wilhelm's work will be introduced by Jan Martinec before the screening. The screening is made possible through the cooperation with the Návštěva Network.

Episode 2 will focus on three young filmmakers from Ukraine, whose work reflect dreary situation in their country. The common feature is an experimental approach to documentary form. All films will be shown with original sound and English subtitles. The works and context will be briefly adressed by Jan Martinec before the screening and discussion will be held after the screening. Done in cooperation with the www.navsteva.network platform.   Free entry.
